Practical information to find out about the Lauragais countryside.
The hills of the southern Lauragais are a mixture of ancient and modern. The Lauragais consists of around 15 walled towns, a surprisingly large amount, which explains the King of Frances’ wish to gain authority over the territory which for a long time had been the fortress of Catharism. For the last 6000 years, these hills have been the corn hills, they have remained fertile agricultural land thanks to its’ micro-climate. This can also be witnessed by the many windmills and corn markets in the area. Traces of the affluence of pastel remain everywhere, to be seen in the architecture, the churches, the castles and the dovecotes. Added to this are the most exceptional panoramic views of the Pyrenean range of mountains, the valley of the Hers river, the brilliant golden yellow of the sunflower fields. You will understand by coming here that it doesn’t take you long to find the beauty of the Lauragais.
