Mons Town Hall

Mons Town Hall was built in the Gothic style between 1458 and 1477. It has only one upper floor and is capped with a bell-tower added in 1717-1718. Be sure to stop and admire the bronze banister in front of its facade, representing St George and the dragon, a work by the French artist in 2006. You must also stop and stroke (with your left hand) the little monkey squatting to the left of the main entrance. He will bring you good luck! The interior is also worth a visit: The Wedding Hall with its Italian ceiling (1682), the Council Chamber with its fireplace made of marble from Rance, and the Sacquiaux Room with its impressive 16th-century fireplace. The Portrait Room and the Gothic Hall are also exceptional and decorated in period style. In the other wing, the Mayor’s Parlour is one of the oldest parts of the building, dating back to the 15th century, but its current furnishings only go back to the late 19th century. Tip: The local dialect word sacquiaux means “small leather bags”. The Sacquiaux Room in the Town Hall was originally the guardhouse and the keys of the city were stored there for safekeeping. Tours of the Town Hall are by appointment only and must be led by an official guide.
