Brasserie à Vapeur

It was meant to be that the Cuvelier Brewery, founded more than 2 centuries ago, would not experience the terrible fate suffered by many such establishments: dereliction. In 1984, a couple of brewing fanatics bought the site, thus ensuring a future for the last steam-powered brewery in the world! On the last Saturday of the month, the magic happens. Members of the public are invited to witness the brewing process. As it used to, a 12 horsepower steam engine powers the equipment. Its valiant efforts produce a range of four varieties, with evocative names like Vapeur Cochonne and Vapeur en Folie. Like wine, this majestic brew gets better with age. The years help its aromas develop. And it can be kept for over twenty years. The people who run this brewery may have made it possible for tradition to continue, but that doesn’t mean that they live in the past. Export accounts for the majority of the sales of Vapeur beers.
