The Vaccarès, from the Latin "vaccarum regio" (land of cows), a vast brackish water pond alone covers a third of the areas occupied by the Camargue ponds, or approximately 6,600 hectares (12 km by 7 approximately). With a depth of 1.50 m, it is the deepest of the Camargue ponds.
