The name of the town comes from the Latin căsa which means "hut", thus evoking the modest size of the first town. However, the first mention is attested in a title of 1123 under the Latin name Chesiacum.

Later, many spellings followed one another: Cheix in 1287, Chayx in 1450, then Chayz in 1452.
