The paths of freedom are routes that were used by around 90,000 people during the Second World War: resistance fighters, Allied pilots, Jews and those refusing to participate in the STO (compulsory labour service). By attempting to reach Spain, they all hoped to escape the Nazis who threatened their very existence. Haute-Garonne Tourisme and the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" invite you to discover these historic routes while hiking. This is the second part of the hike that began at Port de Balès (see Chemins de la Liberté: Opus No. 1), from Portet-de-Luchon to Granges d'Astau. This easy hike can be done as a continuation of the first part. The suggested route follows the path taken by André Bon, sometimes passing along paved roads. You will be walking in the footsteps of André Bon. This escapee was taken to Saléchan station via Toulouse thanks to the resistance network Françoise, one of the first helpers who participated in the escape of at least 700 people. Like André Bon, who made it to Bénasque in Spain, thousands braved the dangers of the mountains in the hope of finding freedom beyond the peaks of the Pyrenees. A dangerous and demanding human adventure, this gruelling journey cost the lives of more than 2,200 people, victims of the mountains or Nazi troops. You who walk in the footsteps of these shadow fighters, escapees, smugglers, networks of helpers, anonymous people who contributed to the rescues and many of whom never returned... Hike in the Larboust Valley. As you pass through the villages, you can admire the local mountain architecture. Recognisable by the cross on top of this erratic block, this walk offers a panoramic view of the Larboust Valley. Depart from the car park at the entrance to Portet-de-Luchon, follow the road towards Poubeau, then follow the signs for Labach de Cathervielle. Cross the road to reach La Moraine, then take the Portet-de-Luchon path.

A magnificent balcony trail offering views of the high mountains and valleys. An ideal place to take in the landscape. Start from the car park at the entrance to Portet-de-Luchon, turn right behind the church, then follow the signs to Jurvielle, then Labach de Cathervielle until you reach Cathervielle. Cross the road to reach the Moraine de Garin, then take the Portet-de-Luchon path.

Trail accessible in winter. Family walk starting from the village of Gouaux de Larboust. Starting from the village hall in Gouaux-de-Larboust, cross the mountain pastures and the road to the Agudes resort (Peyragudes).

Connecting Hendaye to Banyuls, the GR 10 crosses the Haute-Garonne in the far south, in the heart of the Pyrenees. It passes through the town of Bagnères-de-Luchon and the village of Fos, the two stages of the GR10 in Haute-Garonne. This varied route between the towns of Oô and Melles crosses several passes over 2,000 metres high, but also descends into open valleys and passes through typical Pyrenean villages. The areas crossed have retained all their authenticity, and it is not uncommon to come across herds and shepherds along the way. The mountain landscapes are perfect for contemplation. Rather demanding, with steep gradients, it is popular with experienced hikers and requires good preparation and suitable equipment. Towns crossed: Luchon-Superbagnères resort, Bagnères de Luchon, Juzet-de-Luchon, Sode, Artigue, Fos, Melles.

An accessible and enjoyable route in the heart of the Larboust valley, linking its typical villages with beautiful trails and fun descents. With forests, panoramic views and heritage sites, this is the ideal outing for combining sport and discovery. From Gouaux-de-Larboust, take an old footpath towards Oô, which has been reworked for mountain biking. Enjoy a moment by the river in Oô before tackling the first climb to Labach de Cazeaux. A short detour via the barns will allow you to discover the heritage of the Pyrenees before embarking on a magnificent descent through the woods to Cazeaux-de-Larboust. You will pass through Castillon-de-Larboust and Saint-Aventin, then tackle the climb up to Benqué and Cazarilh-Laspènes, before a beautiful and technical final descent to Bagnères-de-Luchon. Towns crossed: Gouaux-de-Larboust, Oô, Cazeaux-de-Larboust, Castillon-de-Larboust, Saint-Aventin, Benqué-Dessous-et-Dessus, Trébons-de-Luchon, Cazarilh-Laspènes and Bagnères-de-Luchon.

Road closed from 30/11 to 15/04, trail inaccessible. You will overlook the splendid Oueil valley. Best visited in autumn during the deer rut and for the multicoloured, shimmering colours of the forest! The start is just after the junction of Bourg d'Oueil and Port de Balès, towards Cirès. Then follow the GRP signs to reach Lake Paloumères, Port de Pierrefitte and descend to the village of Bourg d'Oueil.

Cycle through the heart of the authentic Oueil valley, with its unobstructed views and legendary Port de Balès. You'll finish with a thrilling descent that will make you forget all the hard work. A physically demanding but technically easy climb on a 4x4 track to Lake Paloumères. This is followed by a trail ride, passing through the famous Port de Balès. Another trail takes you to Port de Pierreffite and, as a grand finale, you finish with a technical but thrilling descent.

This route is mainly in the forest and overlooks the Oô valley, with beautiful views along the way. As a bonus, you will pass under the paragliding take-off area. A colourful spectacle. Start after the church in Oô towards Garin, turn left towards Gouaux, follow the path to the fork towards the Espoujau barns, then left again towards Oô.

An unusual climb up to the barns of Astau, this path was once used by shepherds to take their flocks up to the summer pastures. Start at the exit of the village of Oô and follow the small road between the houses until you reach the barns of Espoujau. The path then descends to the Astau bridge.

Built in the 10th and 11th centuries. The main interest of the chapel Saint-Pé la Moraine is however not in its architecture, but in its exceptional decoration (sculptures, reuse ...). Saint-Pé-de-la-Moraine, built in a mixture of limestone, granite, shale and recuperation of ancient materials.
