This beautiful hike goes through the rounded ridges and allows to climb to the top of Artzamendi of Artzamendi where the view is imposing. It then plunges sharply towards Bidarray and the valley of the Bastan. This steep path can be tricky but it conceals like a perfume of the Pyrenean mountain which is coming.

Choose dry and clear weather to enjoy the view from the Goropsil ridges, and progress safely on the slippery grass and stony paths. The temptation to stop for lunch in Ainhoa (horses at the tie-up) may lead to a late arrival in Sare.

The typical village of Itxassou is the starting point of many hiking routes. Atharri is a good compromise between walking and hiking. Mostly easy, this route will remind you for an hour that you still are in the mountains! The pleasures are varied. Let's say it without detours, the Méhatché pass is certainly one of the most difficult Pyrenean passes to climb by bike, if not one of the most difficult in France. Very often, the slope is in the range of 15 to 20% (certainly in a grandiose setting), too steep for the classic gear ratios of road bikes (a mountain bike will be better suited). Approached by the very short but formidable Légarré pass, the challenge is like a real "construction site", which must be tackled with excellent physical fitness and good preparation.

Built in the 17th century, the massive church is topped by a powerful bell tower in the form of a square tower with a double roof. Typical of Labourdine architecture, the building has a richly ornamented and meticulously maintained interior, including several elements of carved furniture in gilded wood, such as the pulpit, the high altar and the three gallery floors.

A species that thrives in cool and humid areas, the beech tree finds all the conditions it needs to flourish on the northern slope. The few beautiful specimens present here are pollarded. Also known as "trognes," these trees have undergone successive low cuts for decades, giving them their distinctive shapes. These cuts, often made to provide firewood, result in scars that appear as bulges on the tree. The presence of these trees is a boon for saproxylic insects (those that feed on dead wood) and, consequently, for birds like woodpeckers that feed on their larvae.

At this very spot, looking to your left, just across the ravine, you can see a vulture’s nest, recognizable by the white marks below, caused by the droppings. This scavenging bird of prey, very present in the Basque mountains, is always very impressive to observe in flight or in the nest. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars!

Located on the path bordering the tumultuous waters of the Nive towards the Artzamendi, the Pas de Roland takes its name from Roland, a knight of Charlemagne at war with the Saracens. In 778, as he set out to reach the border, a rock blocked his path on the banks of the Nive. With a blow from his horse’s roof, Roland opened the passage to continue southwards.

Designed entirely of wood and shaped like a leaf, its name comes from the contraction of "Elorri Mendi," which means "the mountain of hawthorn," and "ondarea," meaning "heritage." This building is intended to welcome the public for the purpose of raising awareness about biodiversity. Visitors will find information about the Sensitive Natural Area of the Colline de la Bergerie, its history, and its management. The department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques offers nature activities there, including the observation of bees in educational hives installed by the "Nature et Abeilles" association from Larressore.

A farming estate since 1856, the Lurmintoën Borda farm has seen generations of farmers. In 2011, Jean-Baptiste turned to growing PDO Espelette chillies. The Pas de Roland is situated on the path along the turbulent waters of the Nive, towards the Artzamendi. According to legend, the hoof of Roland’s horse, Charlemagne’s nephew, broke a rock in two in a gorge where the Nive flows, at a place now called Le Pas de Roland. In Basque, this place is known as Atekagaitz, which means “bad passage”.
