Walk around the Hirbach Lake

On site, you will find the trail under the following name: BALADE AUTOUR DE L’ETANG DE HIRBACH Immerse yourself in nature! The 46-hectare Hirbach pond is a haven of peace surrounded by beautiful natural surroundings. Part of the Maginot aquatic line, it is located in the Hilsprich and Holving districts. This historic pond, designed before the Second World War as a natural barrier, now offers an ideal setting for a family walk. The path around the pond winds through a variety of landscapes: on one side, the tranquil banks of the pond, perfect for a picnic or a family snack, and on the other, shady stretches of woodland, refreshing on a summer's day. The lush green setting is a haven for nature lovers, anglers and families looking for a quiet outing. Ducks, swans and other aquatic inhabitants glide peacefully over the water, creating a serene and soothing atmosphere. Along the path, on the edge of the forest, stands the majestic Honnert oak, a remarkable tree that reaches a height of around 25 metres. This natural treasure stands majestically, inviting you to contemplate. It is a must-see for all walkers. If children accompany you, make sure you have a snack on the beach near the finishing point. Whether on foot or by bike, this walk is accessible to all, even the youngest. You are guaranteed a moment of relaxation in this green setting, where water, forest and local flora and fauna come together harmoniously to create a highly enjoyable experience. If you enjoy walking along the water's edge, other ponds on the Maginot aquatic line also offer great walks: the Marais pond at Rémering-lès-Puttelange, the the Welschhof pond and the Diefenbach pond in Puttelange-aux-Lacs. - Alternative route: “In the Footsteps of the Porpoises” (Sur les Pas des Marsouins - 13 km), starting from Hilsprich or directly from the Hirbach pond. - Trail-Marking: yellow rectangle - Geographical area: Along the ponds of the aquatic Maginot Line - Starting point: Holving > rue de Lorraine - Pond

In the Footsteps of the Marsouins

On site, you will find the trail under the following name: SUR LES PAS DES MARSOUINS Discover a 13 km trail in the heart of the Sarreguemines Confluences, starting from the villages of Hilsprich and Holving. This route takes you through the area where the “Marsouins’’ of the 41st Regiment of Colonial Infantry Machine Gunners were stationed and fought at the beginning of the Second World War. In these peaceful surroundings, it will take you on a tour of the small village of Hilsprich and its hamlets. On the way, moving along the cycle path towards the Hirbach pond, you'll pass the Castviller chapel surrounded by rural landscapes. Originally existing as a simple covered calvary, it was transformed into a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin in 1815. The walk then takes you to the water's edge, to the 46 acre Hirbach Pond. Partly located in the Hilsprich and Holving districts, it is one of the works of the aquatic Maginot Line, built before the Second World War to form a natural barrier against the enemy. It is now a haven of peace, surrounded by a beautiful natural environment where the great Honnert oak, a tree of remarkable size (around 25 m), flourishes, a beautiful treasure of nature on the edge of the forest. The route continues toward two other points of interest: the mysterious "Black Convent," located at the southern tip of the loop. Steeped in local legends, this mystical site is said to have once housed a convent. According to the legend, the nuns who lived there renounced their vows and fell into debauchery. As punishment, the Lord is said to have engulfed the convent, which became the infamous "Black Convent," buried along with its inhabitants. You won’t find any remains of the site today, but you might sense a special atmosphere there. Then, the Morsbronn Chapel, built in 1860, nestled on the edge of the Buchenhuebel forest and dedicated to Saint Anne, concludes this stage of the trail. - Alternative route: There are several possible walks around the pond, including the shortest of 6.5 km 'Walk around the Hirbach pond' (Balade autour de l’étang de Hirbach), which runs entirely along the pond's banks. The distance is ideal for a nice family walk. - Connections: at the southern end, at the "Le Couvent Noir" sign, to the "Colchicum and Marshes" (Colchiques et Marais - 11.3 km) trail in Val-de-Guéblange and at the "Les Abreuvoirs" sign, towards the "From the Farm to the Pastures" circuit (De la Ferme aux Pâturages - 10.8 km), a 3.2 km connection. - Trail-Marking: yellow rectangle - Geographical area: Along the ponds of the aquatic Maginot Line - Starting points: Hilsprich > 20 rue de l'Église - Stadion / Holving > rue de Lorraine - Pond

Walk around the Marais-Pond

The Marais Pond in Rémering-lès-Puttelange is one of the must-see sites in the Sarreguemines Confluences area. Known for its natural setting, it attracts walkers and nature lovers all year long. Over a short distance of 5.5 km, the "Pond Trail" invites you to explore this haven of tranquility and dive into the history of the Aquatic Maginot Line. The starting point is just below the Cap Fun campsite, where an initial information board introduces the rich past and strategic role of this reservoir pond. After a few steps to the right, crossing the dike offers a stunning view over the calm waters, fishing piers, and surrounding nature. Continuing to the left after the dike (heading right leads to the 11.8 km "Around the Marais Pond" trail), the path winds between fields and forests, offering a full immersion in the local biodiversity. The trail is highly appreciated by cyclists and hikers, and you may come across a few riders who enjoy the calm and refreshing woods. Four additional information boards punctuate your walk, providing insights not only on the Marais Pond but also on its neighbouring ponds in Puttelange, Hoste, and Holving. Around the Marais-Pond

On site, you will find the trail under the following name: AUTOUR DE L’ÉTANG DES MARAIS This hiking trail takes you around the beautiful "Étang des Marais", a central part of the Aquatic Maginot Line area. The starting point is located in the commune of Rémering-lès-Puttelange, where you will find the first information board. Two military remains can still be seen there: the Redoute 117 memorial, commemorating the destruction during the battles of June 1940, and a dam. The Étang des Marais is situated in the heart of the route and is an essential stop. Follow the path winding through the fields until you reach the dam, which also serves as a path for those wishing to complete the full loop around the pond. Like the five other ponds in the area, this one served as a reservoir, allowing the surrounding valleys to be quickly flooded. The dams enabled the area to be flooded within 36 hours. A stop on the dam of the Étang des Marais (Marsh pond) offers a picturesque view of the water, the small fishing piers, and the surrounding nature. Information panels, two large wooden swings overlooking one of the best views of the pond, a playground, and a picnic area have been set up to make the place even more attractive. This pleasant walk through fields and forests is popular with cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders who enjoy the rich natural heritage of this region. The historical significance of this site and the diversity of the surrounding flora and fauna make it a must-see in the Sarreguemines Confluences destination, just like the neighbouring ponds. All benefit from unspoiled nature, ideal for those seeking relaxation. The hiking trail continues to the commune of Hilsprich, where you will find a second information board marking another starting point of the route. This also opens the way to the "In the Footsteps of the Marsouins" (Sur les Pas des Marsouins). - Alternative route: Several loops around the pond are possible, with the shortest route being the "Walk around the Marais-Pond" (Le circuit de l'Étang des Marais - 5.5 km), which entirely circles the banks of the Étang des Marais. This route is ideal for a family outing. The loop around the pond is suitable for strollers and people with reduced mobility. - Connections: 2.1 km to the "The Oak and the Reed" trail (Le Chêne et le Roseau - 12.2 km) around the Diefenbach Pond. Continuation to the "In the Footsteps of the Marsouins" trail (Sur les Pas des Marsouins - 13 km), partially around the Hirbach Pond. A second starting point is located in Saint-Jean-Rohrbach, with a 1.3 km connection. - Trail-Marking: yellow rectangle - Geographical area: Along the ponds of the aquatic Maginot Line - Starting points: Rémering-lès-Puttelange > 25 Rue Saint-Jean – Town Hall or car park near Capfun campsite / Hilsprich > 20 Rue de l'Église – Stadium / Saint-Jean-Rohrbach > Rue Nationale – Church
