This stage covers 18 km. At the start of this section, you’ll walk along the dunes by the huge beach in Sciotot bay. The swell and the strong waves here make it a paradise for watersports enthusiasts. If you’d like to try surfing, head to Sciotot Surf School (open from 31 March to 30 November). The GR®223 then heads inland to the Château du Rozel before going back towards the sea. After walking past Camping Le Ranch, head uphill to reach Le Rozel headland. The dirt path on this section is steeper. At the top, admire the fantastic sea view with all the different shades of blue! Next, you’ll have a view of Surtainville beach. Before you get there, you’ll go past the archaeological site of Le Rozel, where several digs have been conducted over the last few years. This site of national interest tells the story of the Neanderthal people who lived here 80 000 years ago. After this short historical break, you’ll arrive in Surtainville. The path takes you through this little seaside town. On the way, you’ll see a pond and the ruins of Saint-Ergouêfle chapel. From Surtainville to Baubigny, the coastal path heads into the dunes for 3 km. Then from Baubigny to Hatainville, the path leads away from the sea, but don’t miss the view of Flamanville headland.

Covering 18 km, this stage takes you to discover the dunes in Hatainville and Carteret headland. From Hatainville to Barneville-Carteret, a section of the path runs through the dune landscape. These impressive sand formations feel almost lunar. Be sure to follow the markers on logs in the sand and to close any gates after going through them. After a few kilometres in the dunes, you’ll reach the ruins of an old church. Next, follow the path to Carteret semaphore. The climb is quite steep but it’s well worth it. Here, you’ll have a lovely view of Carteret headland, its long stretches of sand and its rugged coastline. The path follows the Carteret cliffs, with a great view of the seaside resort. On this short section, the coastal path is more hilly, so you’ll need good pair of shoes as you walk along the cliffs. Before arriving at the marina, take a short break at La Potinière beach. You’ll love this picturesque setting with its colourful beach huts, a legacy of the old sea bathing tradition. Next, the GR®223 carries on towards the old lavoir (wash house) in the hamlet of Le Tôt. Then you’ll head back to the sea and the dunes all the way to Portbail. To reach this pretty village, cross the tidal inlet and the 13-arch bridge.

Lovers of solitude and old stones will be satisfied. An ideal path to walk in the springtime to listen to the birds singing or to observe the flowers that cover the edges of the paths...

From the Stakes, you will quickly reach Sciotot. In front of you, a long beach of fine sand will lead you to Cap du Rozel from where you can admire a beautiful panorama of the surrounding beaches. The route then passes through the protected natural site of the Hatainville dunes. You will pass the Cap de Carteret which offers breathtaking panoramas before going back down to Barneville-Carteret and its marina.

Feet in the sand and eyes on the horizon for this magnificent hike in this exceptional site of the Cape of Carteret, facing the Channel Islands. Remarkable points on the tour : 0- At the old station, the small tourist train of Carteret starts its journey, it goes to Port-Bail 10 kilometers away on the "Côte des Isles" with comments during the trip. The train dates from 1930 1- The port of Carteret with its dock built in 1995 welcomes boaters and fishers, but especially shellfish including the famous lobster Carteret. As early as 1881, the link with Jersey was set up. Today, high-speed catamarans have replaced steamers 2- The former 18th century seigniorial manor of Carteret is famous for having been used as a holiday resort by Jules Barbey d'Aurévilly, who set part of the action of his novel "Une Vieille Maîtresse" there (private property). 3- Beaches: view of Barneville beach which stretches across the harbor and where we collect winkles, shrimp or curlers. The beach of Potinière is sheltered by the cliff below the path. It reminds us of the boom in sea bathing in Carteret in 1900. 4- The customs path, created in 1791, allowed the profession to monitor the coastline. Used for 150 years, it gradually fell into disuse. Today, it is the GR223 which goes around the Manche in 223 km. 5 - The cape and the lighthouse. Opposite, the island of Jersey and the islets of Ecrehou, to the north the dunes and to the south the sandy coastline interspersed with the 8 harbours of the Cotentin, which extends over 100 km to the cliffs of Granville 6- The old church in ruins (listed site) is dedicated to St-Germain-le-Scot, who evangelized the Cotentin in the 5th century. It is a vestige of the old village covered by the sands. On the wild and immense beach, you can practice sand yachting and speed-sailing. 7 - The perched dunes (i.e. leaning on a fossil cliff) are a high place of the natural heritage of Lower Normandy. The landscape, biological, historical and cultural heritage is very rich and protected on about 800 ha Remarkable points in the vicinity: The church Saint-Germain d'Auxerre de Barneville is one of the most interesting Romanesque churches (around 1140) of Cotentin. The tower of the church is part of the series of church towers fortified in the years 1405 to 1412 following English incursions in Cotentin. The manor of Graffard: visible from the D903. The current manor replaces an old stronghold occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War. It was built in 1574-1575. It is a remarkable example of Renaissance construction (private property). The old town of Barneville: behind the church, the remains of an ancient feudal mound, a fortification of earth and wood. The high fortified tower of the church was built in the 15th century, during the Hundred Years War, to watch over the coast and the harbour of Carteret at a time when invaders came mainly from the sea. The village of Les Rivières : near the harbour, it is very charming. The road winds along low stone walls, flower gardens and often modest houses The village of Tôt, whose only street of flowered houses follows the course of the "Gerfleur". There are still the remains of an old mill and a wash house, recently restored, where "Mère Denis" used to wash clothes. Le Valnotte: hamlet built in a narrow and steep valley, where the vegetation is lush. Continuing through the hamlet of Toulorge, one reaches a place set up for picnics with a view of the beaches.

Along the way, take the time to visit Portbail, its Notre-Dame church, an old Romanesque sanctuary dominated by a fortified tower, as well as the remains of a Gallo-Roman baptistery. You will then pass by the seaside resort of Lindbergh-Plage which owes its name to the famous aviator who flew over it during his crossing New York - Paris in 1927.

From the Anse de Sciotot to the Cap de Flamanville, with its small roads embedded in the rock, without forgetting the charm of the castle and the woods of Flamanville, this circuit will make you discover a concentrate of La Hague.

Going back to the Viking period, the history of Bricquebec is told through its monuments: Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Abbey and the ruins of the castle are worth a visit before leaving for Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, a tourist town including, among others, a 10th century abbey and a museum dedicated to the writer Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, born in the small town of Saint-Sauveur.

From Bricquebec, you can go on long stone or earth "hunts", bordered by hedges or situated on the edge of the woods. This circuit is aimed at a well-informed public and includes some beautiful "climbs" that will take you through the Bois de la Tombette. On the way back, a passage on the edge of the Bois des Roches will give you the opportunity to stop for a while to contemplate the megalithic monuments present on this site. This circuit goes through the Rocheville hill, famous for its prehistoric monuments as well as for its picturesque and legendary sites, formed by five groups of rocks.

Discover, in a fascinating guided tour, the remarkable Bunehou Manor. Its buildings exemplify the architectural evolution of Cotentin dwellings between the 14th and 17th centuries. The manor is steeped in history and was the scene of a violent quarrel between two great seigneurs of the Hundred Years war, Nicolas de Chiffrevast and Geoffroy d'Harcourt. The visit continues into the English-style garden where dry-stone walls combine intimately with many varieties of plant to create an harmonious whole.

This site on the Diélette river has been occupied by a mill since the 12th century. The current mill building and mechanisms date from the mid-18th century and have not been modified since. It has retained all its wooden mechanisms. 3 pairs of millstones are driven by 2 wooden wheels. A group of volunteers have been working tirelessly for years to restore the building and mechanisms to their original state. Subsidies from the local authorities have enabled us to install a new framework, fashioned by students at the Lycée Professionnel E.Doucet in Equeurdreville, and to clad the building in shale stone. This will make it one of the few surviving mills in the Nord Cotentin region, as it was in operation in the 18th century. On the other side of the river are the remains of an older mill, dating from the 16th century. All the remaining masonry has been "crystallized" to show the layout of successive mills and the evolution of our ancestors' skills. Today, the building has been completely restored, as has the millstone mechanism. A 2nd wheel was installed last year, and volunteers have been busy restoring the barley and buckwheat millstones, as well as their clutches and disengages.
