This walk will allow the family to discover the high tides and the tidal bore phenomenon. The tidal bore is this small wave which forms at the time of the rising tide and which gets bigger as you approach the mouth of the Sée and the Sélune rivers. The most courageous face it in kayak or surfing. Most of them take advantage of the show, especially from the Grouin du Sud.

At the start of this 22 km stage, you’ll go around the village of Genêts, walking next to the salt meadows. When you get to a gabion wall, go along the edge of the meadows and climb over the stiles to get to the Pointe du Mont Manet then Les Porteaux. Next, you’ll go past Le Grand-Port. Note: with very high tidal coefficients, it’s best to take the coastal road between Le Grand-Port and Le Rivage hamlet. The path alternates between salt meadows and roads on the way to the rocky headland at Grouin du Sud, where you’ll have a superb view of the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. This is where the Sée and Sélune streams meet to form a river. During the spring tides, you can watch the famous “mascaret” tidal bore here. This “wall of water” goes up the river an hour and a quarter before the high tide. Next, the coastal path takes you to a bridge that you’ll cross before getting back to the salt meadows. Walk alongside the racecourse that takes you to the departmental road (D911). Next, take a path parallel to the road along the river to the footbridge over the Sée. From here, if you want to explore Avranches, you can follow the GRP path “Les Belvédères du Mont Saint-Michel”. It takes you into the town centre and you can get back on the GR®223 in Bouillé via the GR®22. If you carry on following the GR®223, turn right after going over the footbridge. The road goes through Les Plataines, La Roche and Mirey. From Mirey to Bouillé, you’ll walk through the saltmarshes surrounded by herds of sheep (don’t disturb them). During the spring tides, it’s better to take the road. From Bouillé, carry on this section along the road to Gué de l’Epine. At Moulin de Flaget, you’ll enter the saltmarshes again. Between here and Pontaubault, the path alternates between roads and salt meadows.

Covering an area of 500 kilometres, the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel stretches from the Pointe du Grouin in Brittany to Champeaux in Normandy. It belongs to the club of the most beautiful bays in the world and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is the scene of the highest tides in Europe and is home to a multitude of animal species.

This 18 km stage is the final part of the GR®223, leading to Mont Saint-Michel, the ultimate reward after all of these kilometres on foot. After the bridge over the river Sélune in Pontaubault, you’ll alternate between walking on the dikes and in the salt meadows. In Flagé, follow the road that goes behind the polders all the way to Roche Torin point. There’s a picnic area here with a fantastic view of Mont Saint-Michel and its spectacular bay. You need to go around the point then carry on walking in the salt meadows. Next, you’ll come to another picnic area at Le Rivage. Leaving the area behind you, take the dike that runs along Saint-Avit polder. The finish of the stage is at the footbridge in La Caserne. This is also where the shuttles to Mont Saint-Michel leave from. If you still have some energy left, you can also walk to Mont Saint-Michel, which is around 2 km from here: a last effort before you climb the steps of the famous Mont! Take the opportunity to visit the Abbey, stroll through the picturesque streets or try crossing the bay on foot. During the spring tides, you can watch as Mont Saint-Michel becomes an island again: a magical experience. Note: you’ll go through several gates on this section: please be sure to shut them again behind you.

Cycle from the greenway used by major cycle tourism routes (La Véloscénie, La Vélomaritime and VéloWestNormandy) at Pontaubault to Avranches station, bypassing the mouth of the Sélune.

The route will lead you to the discovery of the Ardennes woods, while following the Sélune, a 1st category river rich in wild salmon.
