Casse, which means oak or oak wood in Occitan, gave its name to this village on the outskirts of Agen. Slightly steep slopes punctuate this hike in the first foothills of the Pays de Serres.

This long hike in the Agen countryside, will make you discover, in the uneven relief of the hillsides of the Pays de Serres, large farms, houses of character, dovecotes, orchards and traditional cultures...

This route, which links two isolated churches in the Agen countryside, crosses the deep and narrow Mondot valley twice. This promises some steep climbs, but the effort will be rewarded by the views offered over the Garonne valley...

This physical circuit crosses the hillsides of the Pays de Serres. On the long ridges, you can see the surrounding hills and villages.

Along this tour, you will discover the church of Saint-Caprais-de-Lerm, a 12th century building in which two chapels are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and the Sacred Heart. The church possesses the relics of Saint Caprais, patron saint of the parish and of Saint-Eutrope. Its tower-shaped bell tower stands on top of the sanctuary. To the south of this building is a Romanesque door without a tympanum, decorated with tori, diamond points and billets. The cross vaults of the nave are probably from the 14th century. The keystones of the three 16th-century chapels are decorated with escutcheons. After passing through the village of Saint-Caprais-de-Lerm, the walk continues on a vast plateau where you can admire the windmill of Puscla and enjoy the many viewpoints over the valley.

After an easy start in the plain on a pedestrian path, you will gradually climb towards the Agenais golf course, then onto the Martinet plateau to discover the roofs of the town and the Garonne valley from the viewpoint of the Virgin and its orientation table.

This tour starts off well by climbing the cliff's Way of the Cross which leads to the foot of the monumental statue of the Virgin, overlooking the town and the Garonne valley. After visiting the Romanesque church of Ste-Radegonde, you will walk along the Garonne canal which connects Castets-en-Dorthe to Toulouse and its Voie Verte (Green Way) which links the Mediterranean. The Côte de Castillou will lead you to the plateau, a little too urbanized, but where the church of St-Ferréol is nestled. You will walk along the Agenais golf course before descending into the valley. Pedestrian and cyclist paths will lead you back to the town hall square, via the parish church.

The first part of the circuit rises progressively in the wooded hillsides of the Bellette, offering vast viewpoints. The second part runs at the bottom of the Masse valley and can be extended around the lake.

This fairly rugged hike will take you along steep, shady paths through the hills of the Agen region of the Pays de Serres.

Romanesque building from the 11th century, built by the Templars of the Order of the Knights of Malta In the 14th century, the church passed into the hands of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. The plan of this church is reminiscent of some oratories from the Carolingian period. It was restored in the 20th century Its dimensions are 16 m long, 6.40 m wide and 12.80 m high. The rectangular nave opens directly onto a magnificent triumphal arch that gives access to a narrow, vaulted sanctuary, ending in an ovoid apse. The floor is covered with large slabs arranged in a cross. To the south, a side chapel was added, with slabs in the shape of a flower. The bell tower is built over the arch of the sanctuary and is shaped like a pinnacle. On the outside, a fragment of the cornice is decorated with modillions with crude heads or geometric figures.

Quatre châteaux, datant du Moyen Âge, et servant d'avant-poste à la défense d'Agen, ont subsisté ; Pleneselve, Castelnoubel, Paradou, Martinet. Ils méritent le coup d'oeil mais ne se visitent pas. Qu'à cela ne tienne, vous allez découvrir deux sites exceptionnels. D'abord la basilique. Elle a été édifiée sur l'emplacement où une statue miraculeuse de la Vierge fut découverte en 1550. La statue est toujours là, abritée dans un reliquaire derrière le maître autel. Bien entendu, elle a donné lieu à d'importants pèlerinages. A tel point qu'en 1891 une statue monumentale de la Vierge fut érigée sur le coteau de la Rocal. Depuis la voie verte du canal, vous accèderez facilement à ce plateau. La vue y est imprenable !

This Romanesque country church cannot be accurately dated due to the lack of documentation about the churches in and around Agen. However, the church’s architecture suggests that it dates back to the 12th century. The church has an arched bell tower, with two bells weighing 400 and 100 kilos, and a well-preserved Romanesque porch. The porch has three arches, and the architectural interest of this doorway is found in the geometrical patterns displayed on these arches.
