Adventure at LA HALTE: Discover Lagruere, Lot-et-Garonne

This circuit successively crosses the agricultural plain, cradle of corn and tobacco, the hamlet of Lamarque, seat of the museum of the school, then numerous poplar groves bordering the river.

This short walk between the Garonne and the Canal is rich in fauna and flora typical of wetlands. A route with thematic panels will help you discover the natural jewels of this site. Between Lagruère and Le Mas-d'Agenais, you can walk along the dyke or join the Garonne to discover the strength of the river and the work done by man to contain it: riprap, willow bushes, plant techniques... developments that must be reviewed after each flood The proximity of the Garonne makes Lagruère a privileged territory. Located on the second terrace of the river, it has been occupied since Antiquity and a bastide was built there in the Middle Ages. The village is located on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa associated with a spa. Near the site, a potter's workshop was discovered and there is also a necropolis, near the Roman camp of Camparona.

From the Canal de Garonne, recently equipped with a Voie Verte, this flat circuit winds along the river Ourbise, passes over the banks of the Garonne before reaching the Lamarque school museum.

This easy hike will take you to the many tobacco drying sheds, witnesses of a recent past when Nicot grass flourished, and to the shady banks of the Garonne canal greenway. Please note that during periods of flooding of the Garonne, this route is closed.

This hike, with its gentle slopes, links the village, which is irrigated by the Garonne, to the Canal des Deux Mers. As you pass through Le Mas-d'Agenais, from the cobbled square planted with a medieval-style market hall, don't hesitate to enter the Saint-Vincent Collegiate Church. It is considered as one of the most remarkable buildings in Lot-et-Garonne, for several reasons. Its architecture first of all, is a mixture of styles, it includes in particular a portal of XIIe century. The collegiate church also owes its fame to the fact that it houses the sarcophagus and the funerary stele of Saint-Vincent, whose relics were sheltered in the 5th century. Finally, the collegiate church of Mas-d'Agenais is famous for its magnificent paintings, including a masterpiece by Rembrandt, representing Christ expiring on the cross.

In this large forest, mostly planted with deciduous trees, large straight tracks mark the boundaries of the plots. To the south, the landscape opens up from the hillsides of Gascony to those of the Garonne

A local association, to promote its forest, offers a health trail, a visit to a pigeon farm and the discovery of the princes of the undergrowth. What an appropriate name for mushrooms! From October 1st to November 15th, please respect the hunting areas around the pigeon houses.

The numerous mills listed on this route, Gibra, Gory, Tastet, Larroque, etc... are located on the hillsides, within reach of the wind. In Agenais, the mill is of the "Gascon" type with a tower of constant external diameter. It is covered with a chestnut or oak shingle roof. Under the pointed roof cap is a powerful rotating frame. The wing shaft, made of oak heartwood, rests on the frame and weighs about a ton. This framework is oriented to the wind. It is driven by a long wooden pole held at two points (at its base and at the punch).

This semi-urban circuit dominates the Garonne in its first part, before climbing the hill from which vast panoramas open up over the valleys of the Garonne and the Lot and the hillsides of the Marmandais and the Pays de Serres. Be very careful when crossing the D 911 and D 813.

From the Tonneins train station, soak up the unique atmosphere and discover the area around Le Mas d?Agenais. From the station forecourt, head towards the town center and follow the bicycle signs for the "Canal des 2 mers". At km 2.5, turn right. Follow "Circuit Rembrandt" along the loop. A painting by Rembrandt is something of a myth, something you'd expect to see in the Louvre, next to a work by Van Gogh or Picasso. But a Rembrandt in the little church of Le Mas-d'Agenais sounds more like a Gascon treat. While you're in the village, take a look at the work in the collegiate church of Saint-Vincent. Then join the Canal Latéral à la Garonne greenway, an invitation to another roaming adventure. At km 53, you leave the circuit to rejoin the connecting route to Tonneins.

The church, blessed on March 31, 1864, features two chapels dedicated to Saint Joseph and the Blessed Virgin. Giovanni Masutti decorated the central part of the choir paneling. On an azure background, three circular rows of clouds surround the nimbed dove of the Holy Spirit. Two angels' heads emerge on the left and right. He also painted the choir wall and chapels in blue. At the Lamarque School Museum, visitors are invited into a classroom and are given a 15-minute lesson, comprising different traditional classroom tasks such as dictation, problem-solving, mental arithmetic, calligraphy, history and geography. Each year, the museum organises a certificat d'études primaires (former French school exams) and an essay-writing competition.

The Nature Reserve contributes to the protection of nature. Numerous scientific studies are carried out here. It is open to all types of visitors (schoolchildren, the general public, specialized establishments) to observe the flora and fauna, but only during visits accompanied by a Reserve agent and according to the management structure's activity schedule.

But how did this priceless painting end up in Mas d'Agenais?
