Le Puy, Rocamadour, Gourdon: the Way of Compostela enters Lot-et-Garonne at Montayral, in the Lot valley. As far as Penne d'Agenais, the landscape of the Haut-Agenais opens up on panoramas and reveals the richness of its heritage, such as the bastide of Tournon d'Agenais.

This long hike follows the paths of the GR de Pays Châteaux et Bastides en Haut-Agenais Périgord, from Condat to Bonaguil and from Montayral to Condat, those of the GR 36 from Bonaguil to Saint-Martin-le-Redon and then the GR 652 from Saint-Martin to the castle of Montayral.

This short thematic walk goes around the castle of Bonaguil through the traditional vegetation of the Haut-Agenais Périgord, oaks, chestnut trees, hornbeams, boxwoods, brooms, etc. Old iron ore quarries can be seen in the woods, reminding us of the region's iron and steel past. Seven thematic tables will help you discover the history of this area from 7000 years ago to the present day. The castle, "Major site of Aquitaine", exudes a rare serenity. It is built on a rocky spur in the middle of the forest, far from the main roads. It is the work of Baron Béranger de Roquefeuil who, from 1480 to 1520, transformed the initial 13th century castle into a masterpiece of military architecture, where medieval defensive attributes rub shoulders with fire artillery (remarkable dungeon in the shape of a ship's bow, curtains, barbican...).

In addition to two loops of 2 and 15 km, we offer an intermediate circuit of 8 km in a wooded area of the Périgord forest which hides the castle of Bonaguil.

This fortified castle, listed as a "Major Site of Aquitaine", stands on a rocky spur. It is unique in Europe, illustrating the evolution of defence techniques from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

As a link between Quercy and Agenais, the Lot changes at Montayral. Twisted in the causses, it widens its meanders here. On the circuit, the contrast is striking between the limestone plateau planted with fir trees and the oaks of the plain.

Plum tree orchards and vineyards alternate with wooded hills and arid pechs of the Quercy gates along this circuit. You can also discover the Lagrolère astronomical observatory. The association which occupies it, Gap-Est 47 exists since more than 20 years. At the beginning, the club met in premises lent by the town hall of Montayral to build its observation equipment. As the group of volunteers with a passion for astronomy continued to grow, they decided to create activities to introduce groups of individuals and schools to their passion. Little by little the association acquired observation instruments and then the observatory was built in the commune of Montayral with the support of the community of communes of Fumélois-Lémance and the Conseil Général.

An essential means of communication when roads and bridges were rare, if not non-existent, navigation on the Lot had its golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries. Boats and barrels, made on the spot, allowed the trade of wine, flour and local handicrafts: sugar cauldrons, carpentry nails, paper bales, building stones, etc... to supply the great port of Bordeaux and the sugar islands. On the way back, spices, salt, silk and dried fish went up the river. Successive wars, the decline of Bordeaux, but also the advent of the railways in 1869 (Capdenac/Cahors/Agen line) condemned merchant transport. The Lot was declassified as a navigable river in 1926. In recent years, the renovation of the locks has enabled houseboats and barges to reclaim this waterway.

This linear walk, marked out in yellow-red, is a stage of the GR de Pays "Châteaux et Bastides en Haut-Agenais Périgord". It links the castle of Fumel and the river Lot to the castle of Bonaguil, one of the high places of tourism in the Lot et Garonne.

The charming little village of Condat is located at the confluence of the Lot and the Thèze. The Napoleon bridge spans the river, which was once important for the local economy. It illustrates the evolution of defense techniques from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, up to the beginnings of Vauban fortifications in the perspective of fire artillery. At the gateway to the Lot and Périgord, in Lot-et-Garonne, the Château de Bonaguil is remarkably preserved. Towers, keep, drawbridge, cave, seigneurial hall, oratory, graffiti, underground passages, etc., a visit to the castle is a real journey through time. It welcomes you, day and night, from the top of its keep to the cool of its cave for thrilling visits, activities, workshops and an escape game that take you back to the Middle Ages.

Fumel Castle overlooks the Lot River. The original fortress, which guarded the border between Quercy and Agenais, was transformed by the lords of Fumel during the Renaissance and the classical period. The castle now houses the town hall services. The flower-filled terraces and the old adjoining park are accessible to visitors.

Fumel's hydroelectric power station was started after WW2. It was reserved for the electric power supply of the metallurgic factory. This power station is of the "in real time" type. A concrete building, it is composed of a 7m high dam with valves which, apart from transporting the water towards to "Kapler" turbines, allows to regulate the height of the Lot river's water. The production enables 7.000 houses to get a clean and sustainable energy. A water tower is also on site.
