You name it, it's Le Corbusier. It's beautiful and, what's more, it's full of juicy little anecdotes. Did you know that the Unité d'Habitation was his second largest building in the world? And that the windows of the Maison de la Culture were musical? And guess what constellation appears in the concrete of Saint-Pierre church? In short, come along to the site for a little lesson in creativity.

When the mist descends into the valley, you could easily believe you were in some Celtic land, so much does the castle perched up on the Rock remind you of legends from over the Channel. And yet you are still at the gateway to Le Forez and the castle, which now turns away its visitors (only the chapel is still open to visit), is the southern guardian of Saint Paul en Cornillon. Here you will find a complete range of legends of all kinds centred on the castle, the churches and even the belvedere (minus the bagpipes and ghosts). And you wouldn't think it, but that explains a lot. Family quarrels, impossible love stories (Charlotte de Suze and Robert de Jarjaye, a local version of Romeo and Juliette), tales of vendettas (complete with a manhunt and the murder of the Count of Le Forez), pillaging, fires. And you still haven't seen and heard it all. Impossible to leave this site with climbing to the top of the legendary Mont Fayn. Up there, you will find viewpoint indicator and an incredible view over the Loire Gorges (with the Le Pertuiset bridge in the background). Ah yes - you also risk hearing the giants talking - but don't worry, they are busy blacksmithing.

If one day you find yourself in the little town of Saint-Victor, up on its little mountain where the wind blows hard, you'll see the Chastel, a castle that was once a possession of the counts of Forez, the Archbishop of Lyon and even the King of France - hence the fleur-de-lis in the coat of arms, turn off your engine and listen. You will be able to hear the wind. Open your eyes wide and take in the landscape and the stone houses. By now you should be in "unwind" mode. That's the effect Saint-Victor-sur-Loire has. A big breath of peace, quiet and contentment. Especially as here you get the full pack: Medieval castle, Romanesque church on one side, boats and farniente on the other. There's even a romantic touch, with the Roseraie du Berland and its 80 varieties of flowers. While you're there, smell the "Muriel Robin", named after a famous comedienne from Saint-Étienne - it's refreshing. I had a sniff of the "Aimé Jacquet" and I have to say there was a hint of the smell of Victory in there. Once in the town, you won't be able to resist the call of a walk round the ramparts. Don't look for the cherries, they were all sold - so the story goes - to the people of Saint-Étienne by the croque-cerises (cherry eaters) - a nickname for the inhabitants of Saint-Victor that has stuck. I wonder if there isn't a bit of jealously behind it.

On the banks of Lac de Grangent, in the Gorges de la Loire Nature Reserve, take a break on the beach at Saint-Victor-sur-Loire. It's a fine sandy beach topped by a vast area of greenery with children's playground equipment, with free access.

The Château (11th and 12th century) is flanked by two towers and overlooks the village's river and houses. It is surrounded by gardens and is now a must-visit cultural centre.

It was named "la frontière" because Aurec was the first town in the Haute Loire where the "42" who had been banned from the department took refuge.
