An abandoned and dilapidated goshawk, which the knowledgeable handymen of the City Council have rehabilitated. This one culminates on a hillock, the fifth explanatory site described during the walk. Signs briefly tell the life of the Landes forest. The one of the ditches evokes swamps, the road to Compostela, shepherds, sanitation... The cork oaks are an excuse to learn about their economic role in Vieux-Boucau. Further on, the walker learns about the gluttony of the maritime pine swallowing its 45 tons per day for a wooded hectare. The fourth stop, in a clearing, reminds us of the damage caused by Klaus. The circuit climbs up to the pigeon house and the explanations of this traditional hunting. The unmasking is carried out between the beginning of June and the end of August. This is the extraction of the cork and this operation requires the intervention of a qualified workforce so as not to injure the tree concerned, the cork oak. Every twenty years, the so-called "male" cork is extracted, which can only be used for decoration. It is only about ten years later that the reproductive layer, the "female" layer, can be used for the manufacture of high-quality corks or decorations. The cork oak is as present as the maritime pine in the Marensin, and has suffered from economic discrimination: it was much less profitable than the pine. However, it is not lacking in ecological qualities: a habitat for nocturnal birds of prey, attractive to fauna and flora... It could even be used as a firebreak! It is a natural thermal insulator.

Every village has its own original, its own madman, its own local eccentric, whose particularity is to spice up the life of the community. From the 1920s onwards, Léon was home to a curious character: Loys Labèque. A vagabond with anarchistic tendencies, an adventurer with a mystical streak, he was also touched by the Christian faith and wrote mysterious poems for the average person. Originally from Léon, he was to rest there until the end of his days, in 1941, at the Villa Agnoutine. For some inhabitants, the memory of this strange man haunting the streets remains, "yellow panama, glasses and black lavaliere, false collar and celluloid cuffs of unforgettable dimensions".

Under heavy surveillance from mid-March to mid-October, the Landes forest is dotted with watchtowers. About forty metres high, these metal behemoths are the guarantors of safety against fire outbreaks. Until 2004, seasonal workers were responsible for this surveillance, which has often proved its effectiveness. But the sudden death of one of them, probably due to lightning, changed all that, and since then the towers have been equipped with surveillance cameras. Supported by a system called Prodalis, which won the 2010 ENSOSP innovation prize, their sharp eyes have since replaced the human eye in this constant battle against the flames.

With its exceptional landscapes and remarkable flora and fauna, the Courant d'Huchet Nature Reserve is Aquitaine's last remaining natural pond and stream. Guided walking tours depart from Pont de Pichelèbe on the D328 in Moliets. 2 hours, 2 km. Reception chalet at Pont de Pichelèbe open from April to September. Exhibition on the reserve's natural heritage: models and panels. Free admission. The reserve's footpaths remain open to walkers, except for the Nasse footbridge due to its instability (reopening postponed).

In the north of the village, in the quarter of Maâ, the old typical houses worth the visit. La Chapelle Saint Laurent de Maâ situated at the end of the street fetches from the XIIth century and was a famous stop for the pilgrims on the way of Saint Jacques de Compostelle. This chapel can be visited each monday in July and August.

Saint Girons de Lest was located a few kilometres west of the present-day town of Saint Girons. The term Lest is most probably a contraction of the Gascon word "l'estay" which means a lagoon or estuary, perhaps attesting to the presence of a lagoon coast before the invasion of the sands in the 14th century. This cork oak wood sheltered the last farm of the village of Saint Girons de Lest, which disappeared under the sands. The remains of the church of this village, abandoned in 1734, can still be seen at the top of the Tuc de la Capere, a few hundred metres away.

In the 19th century, the water supply was still provided by dug wells that were liable to be contaminated, particularly by animal excrement, a real public health problem. Henri Crouzet, an engineer from the Ponts et Chaussées, found the solution by installing numerous filtering wells in the Landes. These wells are lined with a smooth lime-based coating that ensures a good seal on the walls. A layer of pebbles and charcoal at the bottom of the well also filters out undesirable organic components. In Saint-Girons, the first filtering well to be built was rediscovered by accident, during work in the town centre. Since then, a glass pyramid has protected this ingenious treasure and displayed it for passers-by to see.

The sauveté of Saint-Girons was an area limited by 4 columns (2 remain today) around the church which dates from the 12th century. The space of the sauveté, negotiated between the religious authorities and the local lord, was intended to create a zone of exploitation and settlement. Fugitives, wanderers and the disinherited could take refuge there and remain in safety. In the department, only Bougue, Gabarret and Mimizan also seem to have housed rescues.

In the past, in Linxe as elsewhere, many families owned one or more pigs. A substantial resource, the pig is also a fragile animal that requires care, especially a few months after weaning. Pig consortia (but there were also consortia for cows) made it possible to pool financial resources to meet these expenses. Each member contributed according to the number of pigs declared, veterinary expenses and losses, which were reimbursed to the owners. A few clever people took advantage of this by declaring only one or two pigs. The representatives of this species often resembled each other, so if one of their pigs died, it was of course that one! To avoid this abuse, the pigs concerned were marked with the letter "L" for Linxe.

At the bend in a street or a path, you sometimes come across trees that are a little different from the others. Covered with garlands, tied with flowers, the May tree (or maiade) is erected in honour of a neighbour, a friend, an elected official, a district... It is stripped of its branches and carried, sometimes during the day followed by a tumultuous procession, sometimes at night escorted in a hullabaloo of excited whispers. Three wreaths traditionally decorate these trees, which grow each spring. Everyone participates in the decoration of the tree, especially the children, who are the bearers, if not of the tree, of the tradition that accompanies it for future generations.
