This hike gives you panoramic views over the lower part of the Eau d'Olle valley and Bourg d'Oisans. TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Departure: parking lot in the hamlet of La Traverse (Allemond) Height difference: 636 m Duration: 2h outward journey, 1h35 return journey Distance: 2.9 km (one way) Level: moderate (avoid with young children - 2 ravine crossings equipped with handrails) MAP AND TOPO : IGN TOP 25 map n°3335 EST OBP map no. 2 (Oisans au Bout des Pieds): trail 210 ITINERARY: Reach the hamlet of La Traverse (6 km from the bottom of the village) by following the road above the church. Park on the bend after La Traverse. Climb to the Chalanches hut: Take the path opposite the parking lot that enters the woods to reach point 1259 and join the signposted path. Follow it northwards, then fork left at a higher point towards Les Chalanches (signs). Continue along the Chemin de Ferret, which opens out southwards onto the Bourg d'Oisans depression. Carefully cross two ravines (Drayre Grande and Drayre Creuse), the second of which is equipped with a handrail to compensate for its regular erosion. The path continues on a balcony, then forks abruptly to the north and climbs fifty meters to a large flat where the Chalanches hut (1806m) is nestled. The view is open here, offering splendid panoramic views over the plain of Bourg d'Oisans, the Écrins and Grandes Rousses massifs, as well as the austere north face of the cime du Cornillon. You can come back down by the same or another route (210 bis on OBP map no. 2, 1h55 descent). Descent and end of the Chalanches loop: Take the signposted path to the left of the hut (west) and follow it. It descends due south over a number of short switchbacks until you reach point 1297. It then branches off to the east to make the long traverse of the south face of the Chalmettes mountain (Combettes wood) and reach the parking lot. CULTURE : The Mines de Challanches, exploited under Louis XVI, have provided a rare diversity of minerals. These ancient silver mines, located at an altitude of almost 2000 meters, were discovered by a young shepherdess in 1767. They were mined for some thirty years in the 18th century. They were famous at the time, producing up to 600 kg of silver a year. At their peak, they employed around a hundred workers, whose working conditions, given the altitude, were very difficult. The area is considered one of France's most remarkable mineralogical sites, with some sixty species of mineral discovered on site, helping to make the Oisans a world-renowned center for mineralogy.

Riding along the comfortable dykes from the Romanche to the Vénéon Valley, you can admire the surrounding peaks and the peaceful channels around Bourg d'Oisans. An easy and varied ride. Starting at Bourg d'Oisans, ride towards Rochetaillée following tracks on the left-hand side of the valley. Come back along the dykes of the Romanche, before heading off towards Venosc on tracks and paths. This is the hilliest part of the ride. Return to Bourg d'Oisans via the same route.

The path goes through a forest of beech trees, oaks and spruce, home to a wide range of animals. In Villard Reculas, you will be walking among pastureland and meadows. The village houses are enhanced by a harmonious style of architecture, featuring stonework and timber. There is a lovely view over the Bourg d'Oisans plain and the Taillefer massif. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Starting point: Bourg d'Oisans Height gain: 720 m Total duration: 3 hours Distance: 5 km Level: moderate MAP Map IGN Top 25 no.3335 E Departure from Le Rafour (719m). Take the road that crosses the small hamlet of Le Rafour, signposted 'Pied de Combe creuse'. The climb begins at the foot of Combe Creuse! A very steep climb in the forest of about 1h45 to 'La Fontaine de l'Ours' (1274m). From there you continue the climb, which becomes slightly less steep. You will arrive on the road that leads to Villard Reculas. At 100m on the right, on the other side of the road, you see a path that goes up. There are no signs or markings. You go up this path and after 100m you see the pole that indicates 'Les Essarts' (1435m). You turn right, in the direction of Villard Reculas, it is still an hour's walk in the forest to get to the center. From Villard Reculas you have a breathtaking view over the plain of Bourg d'Oisans, the Taillefer, Belledonne and the Ecrins. The return can be done via the same path. You can also choose to go down via Sardonne, the road then becomes a bit longer but also much less steep on the descent. In Les Essarts direction Sardonne, Combe de la Voute and then direction Le Rafour. Total ascent time: 3h00, descent: about 2h30.

From Le Bourg-d'Oisans, the voie verte runs along the cliff to the Cascade de la Pisse, before arriving at the Vénéon. Follow the banks of the Eau d'Olle to its confluence with the Romanche, then continue on to the Champeau pond. From the Tourist Office, cross the Place du Château Tranquin, then follow the path along the aiguille d'Escalade. Walk past the skate park, then turn right to join the voie verte. This follows the right bank of the Eau d'Olle for about 1 km before crossing a footbridge to reach the left bank, which you will follow for 800 meters. Stay on the greenway, and about 250 m after crossing the Eau d'Olle bridge, you'll reach the "La Passerelle" bus stop. Cross the road to reach it, then the footbridge over the Eau d'Olle. Turn left to continue along the path on the right bank of the river. After 1 km of gentle walking, you'll reach the confluence of the Eau d'Olle and Romanche rivers. Follow the path along the right bank of the Romanche for about 600 m, until you reach the Champeau pond. This bucolic site is ideal for a nature break or family picnic. A walk that combines heritage and panoramic views, to discover Allemond in a different way, with its typical narrow streets, wooded paths and breathtaking views of the Grandes Rousses. From the Tourist Office, cross the avenue du parc des Tilleuls, then continue on the main road for 250 m to the former Hôtel Giniès. Turn right onto the Chemin des Econgères, then, after 50 m, take the path that climbs up to join the Route du Village. Go right for 100 m, then turn left to rejoin the Chemin des Econgères. Follow the yellow signs to Allemond Église. There's a fine view of the Grandes Rousses massif before a series of steps lead back to the route du Village. Turn left, then right onto the Chemin de la Croix d'Arnol, which leads you to the church. Take the time to walk around it, and enjoy the exceptional panorama of the valley from the benches at the back. Follow the yellow signs through the village towards the town hall (approx. 450 m). Along the way, you'll come across an old house with a goods elevator, a wash-house and a bread oven above a sundial. When you reach the town hall, turn right and walk down the Chemin des Faures, then the Chemin de la Croze (staircase), to the road. Cross the road to continue on Chemin du Moulin and Chemin du Martinet, always following the "Allemond La Fonderie" signs. THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE WAY : Four banal des Faures Sundial Church

A pretty loop on the heights of Allemond, from the old village to the hamlet of Le Clôt. The route climbs gradually through a pretty forest, with clearer views in spring. A lovely walk that takes you through the old village of Allemond along the paths that mountain farmers used to take before the road was built. The itinerary is easy to access and shaded, making it the perfect way to enjoy a breath of fresh air with friends and family! ITINERARY Park in front of the church. Then take the main road past the war memorial. Go down the road for about 100 meters to the next bend, where the Chemin de Saint Jean starts. Follow the track and "Tour du Clôt" signs, red arrows. After about 2 km, in a sort of clearing, go right up through the woods (many oaks, beeches, hollies, etc.). Pass through the hamlet of Le Clôt, enjoying its unspoilt charm: wash-house, old houses. Then take the path back down to Allemond. Once you've reached Crêt Joré, rejoin the road and take the Chemin de La Jorre back down to the church.

A very pretty hike through different levels of vegetation: the forest, before a stop at the Chazeau hut, then the mountain pastures and finally the scree in a purely mineral atmosphere. The lake site is magnificent, nestled beneath the peaks. The Lac de Belledonne itinerary is one of the must-do hikes in the Eau d'Olle valley. The atmosphere is wild and the scenery magnificent, with the Belledonne range dominating the trail, including the Croix de Belledonne, and facing the Grandes Rousses and Rissiou massifs. TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Start: Coteyssart parking lot above Allemond. Ascent: 916 m Duration: 4 (outward/return) Distance: 11 km Level: difficult ROUTE : From Allemond, take the direction of l'Eglise, then the route de la Traverse to the Coteyssard parking lot. The path starts at the bend above the track, crosses the Coteyssard stream and continues through the forest of the same name to reach the Chazeau hut (unguarded). This is the summer home of transhumant shepherds. After the hut, the trail crosses alpine pastures and blueberry bushes, then climbs to the Pas du Bessey via a moraine. The path then descends slightly and crosses a vast scree, testimony to the passage of the glaciers under the Grand Charnier. At the trail junction, turn left for the final climb to the lake. You pass 2 small lakes and a waterfall descending from the lake. The lake nestles on this natural promontory. THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE WAY: Chamois can sometimes be seen in the scree area in summer.

This is one of the most accessible routes in the Massif de Belledone. After a gentle climb up by road, the fast-paced descent is thrilling. With a tried and tested technique, there's nothing to fear. Turn right and follow this road towards the church and then follow signs to La Rivoire, Le Clot and La Traverse. The road is little-used, leading up to the Coteyssart chalets (1304 m) in around an hour. The panoramic view over the Bourg-d’Oisans plain and Les Grandes Rousses will make the time fly by. > Once at the chalets, the Coteyssart descent starts on the right, signposted «Allemond par la Combe», comprising a pleasant series of switchbacks, with some natural banking. It’s a fun, varied ride. > At La Combe, cross the road and follow signs to Le Villaret (GR 549) opposite. This short path passes between gardens and houses (watch out for local residents), before leading down to the road (D43). > On the road, turn left for 150m and go down to the right to join the path back down to the Lac du Verney. > This path offers a pleasant ride alongside the right side of the lake to the car park. > This single track is not too high and on the sunny side of the valley. It is therefore one of the first paths to open in Oisans in the spring (and the last to close in the autumn).

Discover the shores of Lac du Verney up to the Himalayan footbridge to reach the EDF Hydrelec museum. Go for a bike ride with the kids or in a stroller! From the Tourist Office, walk past the Josserand bakery and continue for 40 meters to the Douce Montagne inn, where you turn left onto the Chemin du Martinet, then follow the "Le Verney" signs. This path takes you to the dam, past a refreshing waterfall. At the top of the path, cross the road and continue right along the left bank of Lac du Verney. You'll pass the nautical base, where you'll find picnic tables, a solarium and children's games, as well as windsurfing, pedal-boating, paddle-boarding and canoeing in July and August. Continue 100 m along the shore to La Guinguette, a small lakeside restaurant open in summer. Continue for 1.5 km along the shore until you reach the Himalayan footbridge leading to the hamlet of Le Verney. Here you can admire the peaks of the Grandes Rousses massif. Cross the footbridge and follow the edge of the lake on your right until you reach a staircase on your left that leads to the EDF Hydrelec museum. This museum offers a free tour to help you better understand hydroelectricity and relive the great industrial epic of hydroelectricity from the 19th century to the present day. The museum is open from June to September. For the return journey, there are two options: -either via the same itinerary (recommended for families with strollers) -or: as you cross the footbridge, turn right to continue 100 m along the track that runs alongside the Eau d'Olle river. Turn left to take the hiking trail that climbs into the forest, following the yellow signs for "le Villaret". After a 10-minute climb through the forest, you come to the route du Villaret, which you follow for 1.8 km back towards Allemond as far as the town hall. It's a road with very little traffic and a beautiful view over the lake. From Allemond town hall, you can walk back down to the Tourist Office, following the signs for "La Fonderie". For families with baby carriages, we recommend starting the walk from the nautical base, where you'll find a parking lot. Nestled at an altitude of 1250m, Vaujany is located on a vast estate connected to Alpe d'Huez in the heart of Oisans in the Northern Alps. The family resort develops with the rhythm of the seasons, caressed by a soft sun. A rich heritage, varied activities, major events, Vaujany is the playground for all mountain lovers.

At 2100 meters, the refuge of La Pra, close to the many clear lakes of the Massif Belledonne, will delight anglers, hikers and families. La Pra is also a wonderful pasture where you can encounter marmots, wild sheep and ibex. The refuge is a stopover on the GR 738 from Chamrousse. The surrounding peaks are often accessible in summer, either on footpaths or "off-track" for those who prefer less frequented areas (Vaudaine, Doménon, Croix de Belledonne sectors), as soon as the snow has disappeared. You are entering a Natura 2000 protected area where swimming in rivers and lakes is strictly prohibited. From the Pré Raymond parking lot, take the forest road, then a path to the left (south-east). A few hairpin bends bring you to an almost level path leading out of the forest. Cross the stream before reaching the dam and Lac du Crozet. Follow the path along the lake and up the Vallon de Mercier to the Col de la Pra. At the col, turn right (south) and descend to the refuge, 5 minutes from the col de la Pra. From Chamrousse, from the parking lot at the foot of the Grande Aiguille, follow the GR de Pays, then pass between the lakes (GR 738). Climb slightly before descending into the combe de l'Echaillon. Turn left onto the path leading to the Oursière waterfalls, then right onto the path leading to Lac David. Climb up to Lac Léama, then on to Lac Longet and Lac Claret. Climb up to the refuge. From the Recoin de Chamrousse, take the GR 738 to Lac Robert. Then follow the same route as the Croix de Chamrousse.

This museum enables visitors to learn more about the industrial heritage of the Romanche valley and local geology. You can also learn more about the development of these activities and the lives of the people involved. The year 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the Romanche museum and the redevelopment of the 1st floor, which will now be dedicated to Charles Albert Keller, an industrialist who developed hydropower in the Romanche valley. The Espace Keller will present a new museography featuring the current models of the museum and those recently restored. Models that Keller presented at universal or international exhibitions. This museum enables visitors to learn more about the industrial heritage of the Romanche valley and local geology. The natural features, along with mineral resources, hydraulic energy and wood reserves, have led to the development of various types of industry over the centuries: hammers in the Middle Ages, followed by blast furnaces, paper mills and then electrometallurgy and electrochemistry. Rochetaillée lierally means "cut rock" in French and looking up at the road carved out of the cliff face, it is clear how the village got its name. However, the exact origin of this road appears lost in the folds of history. Is this road, as many people believe, the remains of a Roman road, the indelible mark of an unstoppable sovereign population? Or, as Doctor Roussillon suggests in his Traveller's guide to Oisans, is it "the still visible trace of a path created during the existence of the lake, along the bottom of the neighbouring mountain and behind the small hamlet of Rochetaillée, from which it draws its name. Such were the circumstances in which this path was built." An observor at the end of the 19th century reported certain similarities beween the Porte des Bons and the Rochetaillée road, suggesting a close correlation between the two. Marks and tracks on the ground were reported to be similar and of exact equal width. Unfortunately, no trace of these marks has been found since and the campaign to clear and clean the site carried out by in 2004 by "Customs and Traditions of Oisans" also failed to uncover any evidence. To better understand this, it needs to be remembered that in the last century, the plain through which the road passes was like a desert without any vegetation. Both the cliff and the plain were completely bare, meaning that it was no doubt easy at the time for witnesses to observe and note the smallest details. These days, the road is virtually covered by vegetation and in some places, you can almost walk past without noticing it. But why carve the road out of the rock? If we go along with Docteur Roussillon's theory, the creation of Saint-Laurent lake would be the only tangible reason for this project, which must have involved considerable manpower and resources. The other theory, if we consider this to be a Roman road, suggests that any rapid progress towards the high mountain passes was hindered by the neighbouring plain. Perhaps it was a swamp or a lake that was liable to flooding due to the unpredictable behaviour of the Romanche river? The size of the project to build the road would also prove the importance of the "Oisans way" in the eyes of the Romans. Along the entire length of the platform, rectangular markings are carved out of the stone at regular intervals. These suggest that a structure consisting of beams and a wooden floor covered the road, widening it from 2 metres to 3 or 4 metres and making for easier progression. At suitable points, wider platforms were installed, known as "garages" that served as passing places for animals and carts. The church as it stands today celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1987. The former, smaller church however was renovated and extended in 1872, yet 10 years later, the building became was considered dangerous and needed to be rebuilt. The current church has undergone many changes, including a new bell tower, a large clock, a new bell-tower roof, outside walls and the replacement and protection of the stained-glass windows. In 2002, the bell tower was changed as a number of inhabitants wanted to read the clock face from afar and from all sides. The old clock was therefore replaced by an electric, automatic system with 4 huge luminous clock faces. The correct time can now be seen from all four points of the compass, both day and night!

The history of Allemond has been marked by the mining industry and Alpine agriculture. Vieux Allemond, around the church and along the road leading to the Mairie, still has the traditional characteristics of Oisans villages. Allemond was known for its mining under Louis XIII and XIV, housing royal foundries (behind the tourist office), in which minerals mined around the village, mainly silver, lead and copper, were melted. For many years, the Hotel des Tilleuls (now closed) occupied some of the buildings of the former royal foundry. This hotel, featuring a superb walnut staircase, was bought in the 1920s by a former mayor of the village. His two daughters, Raymonde and Margarete, were well-known local characters who ran the hotel for many years. It was even rumoured that Napoleon III stayed there. Until the 1960s and 1970s, people lived very simple lives, nearly all as farmers. Then at the end of the 1970s, the Grand-Maison dam project was launched, providing a huge economic boost for the village and the region as a whole. The project lasted 10 years and brought many thousands of workers to the area. These days, the village lives mainly from tourism, both in summer and winter.

The Lac du Verney, between Belldonne and the Grandes Rousses, provides a range of watersports in the summer and is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic with family and friends. It is also the starting point for a lovely walk. The Lac du Verney lake is a 75 ha lake located at an altitude of 725 metres and of variable depth. The dam, which was built between 1979 and 1984, is a hydro-electric power station with its own museum open to the public. Follow the left-hand bank preferably and at the end, follow the road for around 500m, before turning left towards Villaret. Swimming is not allowed.

The water sports centre at the Lac du Verney is open in July and August for activities including paddle boats, canoes, sailing dinghies and paddle boards. The 75-hectare lake, at an altitude of 725 meters and varying in depth, is a true mountain lake, even if it is an artificial reservoir. Cycle through Villard-Reculas. Traditional mountain village of Villard-Reculas has preserved its identity, its architecture and its heritage. You can visit the small streets of the village and enjoy a panoramic view on the peaks of the Oisans.

Villard-Reculas is in a location that is both difficult and ideal for a village. It is situated in a balcony above the valley, with fine pastureland and a south-facing exposure that is ideal for agriculture, but has always been difficult to access. There are several explanations of the origin of the name. "Reculas" from the French "reculé" meaning remote, or else "recula" as the village had to "retreat" following a major avalanche. In any case, once you're there it feels great, but you still have to get there! Oisans features a number of hard-to-reach places, but since 1980, access to Villard-Reculas has been along a good, well-maintained road. The village has undergone something of a revival following several years of rural exodus and, thanks to the welcoming inhabitants, tourism is flourishing. It has kept its traditional character with no large buildings being constructed and no concrete, but instead a farm, goats, chamois and a pretty little church with an interesting history. Indeed, the church was moved to make it easier to access in winter. As is often the case in Oisans, it was originally located just outside the village next to the cemetery, but was completely rebuilt in its current position and extended on the same occasion. The expression "village resort" takes on its full meaning here. Tin roofs, old farms made of slate (thanks to the nearby quarries), old-fashioned pastureland and an atmosphere that is unique to Oisans. Here's an interesting fact - this little village owes its water supply to a system...built by the Sarrazins in the sixth century! The "Canal des Sarrazins", which solved the crucial problem of supplying water to the village, is still working today and is THE monument in Villard-Reculas. Don't expect an aqueduct as the construction is modest but efficient, and has proved to be extremely resistant over time.

The Himalayan footbridge is a recent project straddling the communes of Vaujany and Allemond. You can enjoy some time on the shores of the lake. Swimming is not allowed. A little further on towards the dam is the water sports centre.

At 2100 meters, the refuge of La Pra, close to the many clear lakes of the Massif Belledonne, will delight anglers, hikers and families.
