The arrival of the railroad in La Roche-Posay, and the construction of the station and bridge in the 1890s, enabled the town to become a busy station on the Châtellerault - Châteauroux line. The station boosted the town's development, enabling the Parisian upper middle class to come to La Roche-Posay to take the waters. The railway line operated until 1952 for passengers and 1972 for freight.

At the confluence at Le Breuil, the clear waters of the Gartempe mingle with the dark waters of the Creuse. Rich in fish, they also powered the mills and supplied water to the town's tanneries.
