The Temple forest has been inhabited since ancient times. The arrival of the Knights Templar, those soldier monks, provided us with the first written historical document. In the cartulary of Aubespierre Abbey, we find the phrase: "Domus Fratum de Templo la Forêt (1185)". The Knights Templar, established in 1185, had built their commandery and a chapel here. La Forêt du Temple enjoyed a period of prosperity at the time of its foundation. It was less so later, however, when in 1836 it was removed from the map of communes and annexed to the commune of Mortroux. It wasn't until 1883, thanks to the efforts of dedicated schoolteacher François Ravaud, that La Forêt du Temple regained its administrative identity.

On the edge of the Indre, adjacent to Aigurande, the commune features 3 very different landscape units: to the west, the steep-sided valley of La Petite Creuse, overlooked by the village of Lignaud, with traces of a very ancient past; in between, a tightly-knit, wooded, undulating bocage, criss-crossed by numerous streams, with beautiful vistas. The area is dotted with numerous villages, some of them quite substantial, such as Lignaud and Les Chaumes. A surprising number of village crosses and pathways, in stone, wood or iron, dot the commune. An unusual feature: the commune has two Monuments aux Morts (war memorials), one in the village and one in the hamlet of Villechiron. The writer George Henry (1896-1906), whose real name was Henriette Jeanne Bruner, was a regular visitor to the hamlet of Piodon.

The patron saint of this church was Saint Blaise, but this was replaced by Notre Dame. The oldest parts of the building are the chevet and the façade. This is all that remains of the chapel built by the Templars. The the present bell tower was built in 1874, but the old wall tower has been preserved. It is the only wall steeple in the northern half of the département. In 1893, the church was restored and enlarged to its present form. All interior embellishments are thanks to the generosity of the inhabitants of La Forêt du Temple.

We took over the family farm, which has been organic for almost 25 years, in north Creuse on the border with Indre, where we grow a varied range of vegetables. The last trace of the tradition of Morterolais potters, made by Henri Renty, two finials adorn the seated dogs of his former family home, where he is said to have lived in the 19th century. The ridge finial's original function was to protect the vertical piece of wood on the hip of a roof or dormer, known as the "punch", from the elements. Subsequently, the use of finials took on a decorative dimension, often symbolizing prosperity and wealth, and in particular the profession or political affiliation of the house owner.

Opposite the boulodrome, this sculpture was fashioned from the trunk of a tree? It represents the 2 symbols found on the coats of arms of 2 Mortroux: Mortroux d?ici with the pottery, and the castle for Mortroux Dalhem, a commune located in the Walloon region in the province of Liège, Belgium. These 2 "Mortroux" communes have been twinned for over 30 years.

In the same garden as the sculpture, you'll find a remarkable 8-metre tree, listed in 2006 by the DIREN as one of Limousin's most outstanding trees and alignments.
