Description

The last trace of the tradition of Morterolais potters, made by Henri Renty, two finials adorn the seated dogs of his former family home, where he is said to have lived in the 19th century.

The ridge finial's original function was to protect the vertical piece of wood on the hip of a roof or dormer, known as the "punch", from the elements. Subsequently, the use of finials took on a decorative dimension, often symbolizing prosperity and wealth, and in particular the profession or political affiliation of the house owner.
