A former pilgrimage route of 180 kilometers from the Perigord to Rocamadour, this magnificent route is now marked out, and allows you to cross the vineyards and hills of Bergerac in complete safety, before skirting the green Dordogne valley and its cliffs, to arrive in the valley of the Ouysse. The departure of this first stage will be from the church of Notre Dame, then continuing our way, we reach the church of Saint Jacques, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city of Bergerac. Before crossing the Dordogne river, we will admire the numerous timber-framed houses, the beautiful Renaissance bays but also the Peyrarède house. The coloured nose of the statue of Cyrano will show us the direction of the castle of Monbazillac. Then we will cross the picturesque village of Conne de Labarde before reaching St Cernin de Labarde and its church Saint Saturnin.

The Bergerac region offers a generally open, cultivated landscape, in stark contrast to the forest-partitioned landscapes of the rest of the Dordogne. Here, field crops, vines, meadows and orchards shape landscapes with often distant horizons, modulated by wooded screens. Closer to the Plateau d'Issigeac, the landscape softens and opens out onto large cultivated plots. The vernacular heritage, especially that associated with water (wells, fountains), has been well preserved, and the towers of windmills stand on the ridges and accompany you for part of the way.

From Bergerac you know Cyrano, whose nose you will admire in different points of this charming city. But do you have any idea of its other assets? Built on the banks of the Dordogne, the city owes its prosperity to the river, once a stopover for travelers and merchants, and to the surrounding vineyards whose reputation is well established...

From the old port on the Dordogne river to the Public Leisure Park of Pombonne, a very pleasant and totally flat route which allows you to ride along the Dordogne river and then to reach the pretty park of Pombonne and its swimming lake (16 km round trip); natural connection to the Lembras Queyssac cycle route.

This archaeological relic (16th c.) reminds us that Bergerac was among the most powerful fortified town from 1577 to 1621. It was controlled by the Huguenots such as a lot of towns in the south-west of the kingdom.

In 1385 Ramond de la Rivière was awarded lands situated in the Chevreuse Valley south-west of Paris by King Charles VI, for his contribution to recapturing Bergerac from the English. This led him to name the whole estate Bergerac. Some 300 years later, it was in these lands that Hercule Savinien de Cyrano spent his childhood. Born in 1619 in Paris, he embarked at a young age on a brief military career as part of the company of Gascon Musketeers (it was at this time that he added “de Bergerac” to his name) ; then, without renouncing his bitter and quarrelsome spirit, he resumed his studies and made a name for himself in the field of poetry and literature with his visionary and libertarian side. His writings constantly move between intellectual and scientific curiosity. He died in an accident in Paris in 1655.
