Situated in the village of l'Hôpital, on the "historical variant" of the Way of St. James between Soulac-sur-Mer and Vendays-Montalivet, the Hospital Chapel, whose foundations date from the 12th century, has been undergoing a certain revival in recent years, mainly due to the association of Friends of the Chapel of St. John the Baptist of the Hospital. This association offers to regularly open the chapel to visits, participate in its preservation and restoration, and organise cultural events (conferences, concerts, exhibitions). Located in the heart of the village, the origin of its construction would go back to the 6th century. It was first a simple chapel dedicated to the cult of Saint Vivien, bishop of Saintes. Threatened with destruction on several occasions, notably during barbarian invasions and religious wars, it was restored and embellished in the 12th century, a period during which its remarkable Romanesque style apse was built and still remains today. In 1957, the church was given a new bell tower. Its somewhat surprising architectural style is still an inexhaustible topic of conversation for visitors and inhabitants of the village.
