Inhabited since the 12th century, it is distinguished by its chapel, now converted into a theatre, its beautiful plantations and its playgrounds. As early as the 12th century, monks settled on the upper part of the park to protect themselves from the strong tides of the Garonne and organized a self-sufficient life. Six centuries later, the park was part of a vast agricultural estate called Le Tourmalin. This urban walk, located on both sides of the Garonne, invites you to discover the many facets of the Bordeaux metropolis. River landscapes (port of Bassens, banks of the Garonne), classical architectural landscapes (18th century facades), artistic and contemporary landscapes (new districts, street art, peri-urban refuge) punctuate this walk which is accessible to all. A word of advice: to take full advantage of this walk, plan to spend the whole day. However, thanks to the 4 bridges that cross the Garonne, you can also choose to adjust the length of your tour to your desires.

For over 100 years, the Saint-Jean train station has been the keystone of this eponymous quarter, everyday meeting with a mass of travellers who are sure to find what they’re looking for. Its sheer height makes it unique in France. Hidden behind its large facade is a giant cast-iron concourse, built by Daydé and Pillé, considered to be the largest in the world at the time of construction (1907).

The Port Cailhau, thirty-five metres tall, was integrated into the city walls. In 1864, it was rented by a public letter writer and a person whose job was to weigh salt. They were both evicted in order to renovate the monument. There is a magnificent view of the oldest bridge in Bordeaux, the Pont de Pierre, from here. An exhibition displays the tools and materials used for construction purposes at the time the Porte Cailhau was built and an audio-visual presentation pieced together from old films immerses us in the world of stone masonry.

The Pey-Berland tower, a flamboyant Gothic structure built between 1440 and 1466, is the bell tower of Saint-André cathedral in Bordeaux. The spire was constructed in the 19th century and crowned in 1863 by the statue of Notre-Dame of Aquitaine. The huge eight tonne "bourdon", nicknamed Ferdinand-André, was added in 1869. Ile d'Arcins is the closest island to Bordeaux. Located 6 km from the centre of Bordeaux, it is also one of the only islands in the Garonne and the estuary to be visited Of elongated shape, it stretches over 2 kilometres and is spread over 37 hectares. Farmed until the war, the island then belongs to INRA. It is then one of the main places of experimentation in France for the improvement of certain plant species. The average temperature is two degrees higher than on land and it hardly ever freezes During the 1999 storm, the island was completely flooded and the buildings were too deteriorated to be repaired. The INRA then decided to sell the island to a private individual who wanted to turn it into a natural park and open it to the public.

Completed in 1860, the bridge was used as a railway track in the past. Threathened with demolition before finally being listed as a historical monument in 2010, its highlighting today promises its revival.

The church of Sainte Geneviève is the first church built in Bordeaux after 1905.

The collection of the Museum of Ethnography, which brings together about 8000 to 10,000 items, offers a great heritage and disciplinary interest and a look at a university and regional history related to the national set.
