Camping de la Citadelle: Discover Bourg's Local Gems

The best way to enjoy the cultural richness of the area, from the banks of the river to the vineyards of the Côtes de Bourg, is undoubtedly the Pair-non-Pair loop. From the port of Bourg, to the doyen of our Iconiques, the grotte de Pair-non-Pair, you follow the Canal des 2 Mers trail between the hills of the rows of vines that plunge into the Bourgeais hinterland. The loop passes through a land marked by its cultural heritage, such as the church at Tauriac or the crypt at La Libarde. For a complete panorama, don't miss a stop at the Grand Puy de Lansac mill. Finish off your adventure on the terrace of the château de la citadelle de Bourg, with its breathtaking views over the estuary and the island of Ambès.

Start from the Tourist Office of Bourg. After you left the office, pass in front of the church “Saint Géronce”, and climb up the street “Général Peychaud”. Tunr on the left road “route de Cambes”, and follow it until the stop sign. Be carefull of traffic. Turn left, ride down to the “Corniche” road. Pass in front of the old wine cellar « Brouette ». After the climb, turn right to "Château Les Rocques". Continue on this road then turn left on the road of the “Marchais Nord”, going to the town hall of St Seurin de Bourg. Tunr right to the Château de Côts, and then turn left on the D113e7. At the intersection, you can choose to go at Château Falfas or go on the right and immediately on the left on the D133 to Comps. Continue on this road until St Ciers de Canesse. Arrived at the church Saint-Jean, you can go at the Château La Graulet (300 meters away) in taking the right or continue the road on the D133 until the crossroad of Cheval blanc. Turn left to Villeneuve. Be careful while crossing. Go down to the harbor of Roque de Thau. You can discover the Windows onto the estuary which is a pier over the water. Continue on the Corniche road, straight ahead, and pass by the Windows of the estuary at « Furt » (with the shipwreck) and « Vitescale » (rocks). Continue on the Corniche road. After the coast of « La Reuille », turn right and make step at the church “Notre-Dame de Bayon”. Continue on the Corniche road to the Château Eyquem and the Window of the Estuary. Follow this road until the “Pain de sucre”, then turn right after the old wine cellar Brouette. Afterward, take the same road you take to come but in the other way to the Tourist Office.

On a top of a cliff and at the edge of the Dordogne, Bourg shows you its history and secrets. Start from the Tourist Office. Leave on the right to admire the panoramic view. Walk along the ramparts until the 2 cannons of the District Place. Continue on the place, walk along the church by the left. Go up the street of the "Général Peychaud", the porte of Blaye is on your left, at the extremity of this street. Come back to the church. Go ahead the paved place that lead you to the gate of the Citadelle. Take the alley to the garden of the castle. Pass the gate, the terrace is on the left, have a look on the view. Cross the garden and take the stairs to get out of the garden by the gate. You will see the Porte of l'Esconge on your right. Take the path that lead you to the pond, then walk along the cliff until the iron stair. Here, you have old petroleum tanks and an old mine of the Second World War. Continue on the same way. At the end of the path, go down, pass the pool and go ahead the "Escalier du Roy". You will find thoose stairs the gate on the left. Continue on the street "rue du Roc". to the street "Gouttinière" and the covered wash house. Get around the wash house, go up the way of the harbor and take the 4th street, "rue de la Fontaine" on your left. You will find the fountain at the end of the street. If you look up, you will see the Moorish Villa. Take the stairs close to the fountain to reach the Sea Gate, an other medieval gate. Walk the stairs on the right after the Sea Gate. At the top, turn right and take the first street on the right to enter a small alley. You are now above the Sea Gate. Go back the alley, turn right and walk "Saint Martin" street untill the main street "rue Valentin Bernard" Go up on the right until the shop of the Côtes de Bourg, located on the "Eperon" place. Go down the main street "Valentin Bernard" until the crossroad with the street "Emile Couzinet". On your right is the "Ecomusée of the Bourgeais". Go down on the street "Valentin Bernard" and join the Tourist Office.

Leave the Tourist Office and go down the street « Cahoreau ». Before getting to the port, turn left on “Cours de l’Abbaye” and “Route de Croûte”. Follow this road amid the vineyard. At the stop, be carreful of traffic. Turn right on the D669 and go to the hamlet “La Lustre”. Stay on the “Avenue des Côtes de Bourg” street, take “Pont du Moron” and go the city hall of Prignac et Marcamps. Just before the square “Place de la République”, turn right and ride down to the river. Turn left to “Chemin de Coubet”, then right to “chemin du puy”. Stay on the road “chemin du Spalier” and “Chemin de grande Cazelle”. Turn left at the stop, and go ahead Château La Brunette. At the crossroad, be careful with the traffic. Go ahead in the way of « St Laurent d’Arce ». Go to the town center. Ride down to “Rue du lavoir” street, turn left in the way of “Château de L’Hurbe”. Go ahead and after “Route de Languirot” street, stay on “Chemin de la Croix Blanche” street. Follow until the stop and turn right. Take first on right et go to the town center of Tauriac. After the city hall, turn left in “Gombauds” street et ride until Château Haut Macô. Go the Pugnac city et take the first on left, in the way of “Le Pradier”. At the crossroad, in front of the cul-de-sac, turn right and go to the stop. Be careful with the traffic. Turn left ont this D23 and go ahead. In font of Château Nodoz, tunr right and join the hamlet “Les Androns”. At the stop, take left, then, right to “Cagnac”. At the stop, turn left in the way of “Mombrier”, on the D133. Turn right and go up to “Puybarbe”. In « Puybarbe”, turn right and follow « Liaison de Teuillac ». After the former mill, turn left on “Peublanc” street and go to the stop. Be careful with the traffic. Go ahead and take “Chemin de Terrefort” street. In « La Croix », at the big crossroad of 5 streets, go straight ahead (do not go down) to Terrefort", "La Jauge" and "Le Canton" until the D251. At the next stop, be careful of the trafic. Turn right to the D251, and turn left, in the way of “Pérogendre”. Go ahead and cross “Duverger”. At « Petit Homme », turn left. Go down and take first street on right to “La Grolet” and the church of St Ciers de Canesse. At the stop, take first on right and go up to the D133 to leave the village. At the stop, mind the traffic. Cross the D250 and go to “Château Rousselle”. After this wine estate, turn left and take the pilgrim road (in blue), until the stop. Cross ahead to go to the village of Villeneuve. At the stop, turn right to the D250 and go down until the D669 crossing the town center. At the stop, mind the traffic. Go ahead to “Roque de Thau”. Go near the port. From this ledge road, unique in Gironde, go along the estuary of the Gironde and the Dordogne River. Cross « Rigalet » and go up to « La Reuille ». At the top, after few meters, turn right to the church of Bayon-sur-Gironde. On the left are Château Eyquem and Tayac. The view over the junction of the two rivers is wonderful. Stay ont the road until « Pain de sucre ». Before the top of the hill and the D669, turn right to “Les Cabanes”. Go ahead until the town center of Bourg. Turn right to “Général Peychaud” street until the church of Bourg, the medieval walls and the Tourist Office.

Start from the Tourist Office of Bourg After you leave the Tourist Office, pass the church Saint Géronce, and go up the street of “Général Peychaud”. Join on the left the “Cambes” road, cross the hamlet and continue until the panel “Give way”. Turn left and go down on the Corniche road. Pass in front of the old Brouette cellars, producer of crémant (sparkling wine). Continue straight ahead, until Bayon’s church. You have the possibility to go to the Château Lamblin, Organic wine producer. Just before the church, turn right. Caution, walk next to your bicycle and take the street in prohibited direction on 150 meters, and that until the stop sign. Caution with the traffic. Cross the road D669 until the Château Falfas. It is possible to taste their biodynamic wines. Continue until the Château de Côts, organic wine producer. After the Château, at the intersection, turn left on the street “Chemin des vignes”. Continue straight until the D669. The Château Puy D’Amour, organic wine, is on the right. Turn left, and climb on the 1st road on the right, to Château Les Rocques. At the top, continue straight and down until the “Pain de sucre”. Take on the left the Corniche road, and come back by the same way you took at start until the Tourist Office. For that, turn right after the old Brouette cellars, at the panel “Circuit de l’etuaire”.

Departure at the Window of the Estuary at the port of Bourg. Leaving the river in direction of the water spot. Pass close to the 1928 covered wash-house and follow the docks. At the sign "water spot" (Halte Nautique in french), turn right in the street "Maufras". At the end of the street turn left,cross the gate and walk along the swimming-pool. Take the path on the right to clim the little ramp. Turn left and follow the edge of the cliff. Above there are the citadel of Bourg, its museum and its underground guards room. Cross the park of l'Esconge along the water. Pass the gate, turn right and walk along the wall of the park. At the end of the little path, turn left. Follow this way until the sign on the right to a path that climbs up. At the road, turn right on the path and walk straight ahead. Continue until the principal road. Be safe while you are crossing the D669. At the bottom of the descent, turn right and continue until the next intersection. At the Château La Libarde, turn left and continue on the small pave road that goes to the hamlet "La Libarde". At the end, at the signs, turn right and continue until the hamlet "Les Valades". Enjoy the point of view of the vineyards with the estuary on the back. Pass through it and at the end, continue straight ahead. Walk on the road "Le Caye". In the hamlet, turn left between two houses to get down to a little stream. Cross the small bridge and ascend straight ahead. Pass through two mansions of "Genibon" to arrive on a road. Leave on the right to the D134. At the intersection, turn left. Stay on the left, close to the vines to walk safely. After a few hundred meters, at the intersection, turn left. continue on the paved road before turning right. Take the grass path to come back on the D134. Turn left and climb up in a grove. After few meters, jut before the way out, turn left and continue into the little wood. At the top, continue straight ahead along the parcels of vines. At the last one, turn right and pass between two others plots to arrive onto a white path. Turn left and join the road. Here, turn right to arrive at "Caussade". At the signs, turn left and at the end of the street, turn right to get out the hamlet. At the intersection of the five paths, go straight towards the nice medieval castel "La Grave". Built at the XVIth century, it was restored at the XVIIIth century in Louis XIII style preserved to this day. Continue up to the hill and get around it. Stay on this way until the next intersection. Turn left. Continue on this path until the Window onto the Estuary "La Grave". Enjoy this stop to discover the ground proverbs related to wine. Continue straight ahead to the Château "Haut Libarde". At the crossroad, turn right and go down to the village "La Libarde". At the village, turn right to find the unusual crypt of "La Libarde". Continue straight ahead. Down the descent, turn left on a path. Follow t to join the way you took to come. From here, go to the opposite direction that you previously took to return to the starting point.

Departure at the parking of the Windmill of Grand Puy. Do not miss the outstanding visit of the windmill, the miller’s house and the amazing point of view of the township. Get down the coast. At the bottom, turn left and follow the road. At the crossroad, turn right to join the center of Lansac. On the left, there is the beautiful church of Saint Pierre. Follow the signs along it. Before coming back to the road D133, a path coming on the left to join the « Libarde’s Ballade ». To continue on the « Windmill Ballade », join the D133 and turn left. Continue straight ahead. After the descent, it is possible to take a little path that goes to the ruins of the castel of Lansac. Otherwise, follow the D133 until the crossroad with the D134. Then turn right and cross the road to join the passage at the end of the rows of vines to walk safely. At the signs, climb by the path on the left. At the top, pass through the vines up to the village « Noliquet ». At the crossroad with the road, turn right. In the locality « Viens », turn right in front of the beautiful mansion built in stone of Bourgeais. The stone comes from the quarries located in Prignac et Marcamps. Nowadays, one is still active visible with the « Ballade of the Moron ». Get down this path located between the vines and the grove until the crossroad with the road D134. Turn left and, few meters away, cross to engage the bottom of a grassy slope. Further away, get around the vines to arrive on a road. Turn right and follow the locality « Labrousse ». Continue until an other road. At the crossroad, turn right to join the bottom of the coast of the Windmill, and then get up to join the point where you started.

Start from the parking of the function room of Bayon. From the parking of the function hall, pass between buildings and the romanesque church of Bayon from the XIIth century. Go toward the town hall and the school. Take the main way to go to a crossroad. At the sign, go ahead in "Chemin Moulin Déchamps". At the end of this road, at the signs, turn left. In the village, turn left into "Chemin des Rocques" street. The tarred way continues straight ahead by a grassy path at then end of the vines. Continue straight to the undergrowth, forbidden for cars. Go down the path until you see the angle of a house. at the signs, turn left to arrive on a Corniche road. On this road, turn right and continue on "Route de la Reuille". Turn right into "Escalier du PIcquet" street and climb up in the cliff by the stairs. You can see some cave dwellings and on the opposite bank the first isles of the estuary. At the toad, turn completely to the right and continue to go up the path. At the vines, admire the wonderful view from the confluence between the Dordogne and the Garonne. Follow the signs and stay on the path that goes up. At "Chemin de Plisseau" street, turn left. At the next crossroad, go straight. From "Route de l'île du Nord" street, you can see the Medoc Châteaux and especially the Châteaux margaux. Enter in the village of Francicot. At the stop sign, turn left in front of the shop and at the sign take to the left the "escalier des falaises" street. At the next signs, follow "Escalier de la Vierge. Stay on this way until the house. At the sign, get down the stairs until the Corniche road. At the village "Le Rigalet", turn right and continue on the road until the locality "La Mayanne". At the signs, turn right to "Escaliers de la falaise" street". Climb the "Stairs of the cliff" and go to the right on a with path. At the tarred part, follow on the right and the back of the village of Gauriac. Caution with the traffic on the D669. Cross the road, and go down into "Rue de l'église" street to the ancient part of Gauriac. Pass close to the church and go down to the cemetery. Turn right into "Chemin du lavoir" and go onto the little paved path along a wash house and a fountain. Go up the path that will become white, until the intersection and the signs. Turn left. At the woody part, turn right to go down by a white path: between the vines and wood. At the bottom of the road, at the signs, turn right. At the next signs, turn left to join a little stream that we cross by a wood bridge. Go up in the parcels of vines. Follow until the stop sign this white path which becomes tarred. Cross straight ahead and enter in the center of St Ciers de Canesse. Pass close to the church St Jean Baptiste from the XIIIth century. At the signs, turn right to “La Grolet”. Go down to others signs and go on the right until the Château La Grolet. Go up the road. Continue on this little tarred path. At the right turn, take the earth path in front which the entrance has two rocks in front. At the end of this path, at the intersection, turn lef and go down the tarred way. At the next intersection, turn left and then immediately on the right to follow “Le Petit Homme”. At the intersection, turn right and continue on the path until the village “Perogendre”. At the village, continue straight to join the main road. Cross and go on the right, but stay the closest you can to the vines to be safe. At the intersectin, turn left to “La Jauge”. Make a stop to admire the old windmill that has been restaured. Go straight until the stop. At the signs, take "Route des crêtes" street and continue straight. 100 meters away, go down on the right into "Chemin du lavoir" street on a tarred path that becomes white. In the descent, at the angle of the 1st house, turn left and continues to go down. A fountain, a wash house and a bench are there, make a stop to relax. Turn left into "Route du Pont du Domaine" and continue on this path until the center of Samonac : wonderful view on the church. Turn to the right into "Avenue des Côtes de Bourg" street to get to the crossroad of the church St Martin. Turn left into "Allée des vignes" street. Close to the wood, turn right and immediately to the left to go up the path. At the end of the vine, this path leads to a tarred road. Turn left into "Route de Lansac" until the intersection. Turn right into "Chemin de Peyrefaure" to go to “Peyrefaure”. At the hamlet, turn right at the signs and go on a path. Go up and straight to the other side and follow the path at the end of the range of vines. To the sign, almost at the top, turn left and go down in undergrowth by a nice little way. Go to at a nice wash house and a bench. At the angle of an industrial fence, turn left. At the intersection with a path, take the right and go up the village. After you get back on a road, stay straight until the stop. Turn left into "Avenue des Tourteaux" street and continue on this road until "Route des châteaux" street. Cross, go to the left but stay close to the vines. At the first path, turn right in the way "Liaison Bayon" and go down to St Seurin of Bourg. After about thirty meters, tunr to the right and go down to the wood by a white path. Stay on this way. Pass a fountain and a wash house. The way goes up to some houses and it becomes tarred. At the corner of a house, turn left into "Chemin de Honziou" street to join a little road. To the sign, turn left and follow this way until its end. Turn right into "Chemin du lavoir". We arrive at a covered wash house and a fountain, before passing under the ancient bridge of the railway that used to join Bourg, Blaye and St André De Cubzac. At the intersection, turn left into "Chemin de Gourou" street. Then, turn left at "Château de Nodot" and go up until the last house. At the corner, turn right into "Chemin des vignes" street. Follow this road until a bifurcation completely on the right. Go down until the intersection with the D669 : caution with the traffic. Cross and go toward the Château Tayac, very nice Château. Face to the entering gate, turn right into "Chemin de Tanesse". At the end of this road, at the stop, turn right into "Route de la mairie" street to join the starting point.

This lovely town built on a rocky peak, classified as an “Ancient Village”, is surrounded by medieval ramparts. Its narrow and picturesque streets descend towards the port via the Porte de la Mer, the rue de la Gouttinière or the Escalier du Roy to reach the covered washhouse. On the upper part, discover the Halle, the Hôtel de la Jurade and the Château de la Citadelle (18th century Chartreuse) and taste the local specialty: the Figue de Bourg. North of Bordeaux, a few kilometres from the Dordogne and the Gironde Estuary, discover Pair-non-Pair, one of the oldest decorated caves in the world, older than the one at Lascaux. Occupied for 60 years, before and after Aurignacian, over 15000 tools and 6000 bones from 60 animal species have been found, sources of information on the evolution of the human race, the lithic and bone industry as well as the climate and environment. A jewel of Gironde prehistory, the cave has wall engravings dating from the start of the Upper Paleolithic period, between 33 000 and 26 000 years before our time. Using the natural relief of the walls, they were organised into horizontal friezes and represent, engraved next to one another, above one another or even head to toe, horses, mammoths, deer and even a Megaceros, an animal which is rarely depicted, and several ibex.

Built in the 18th century, it replaces a watchtower. Circular in shape, it is fitted with small huts over its entire height, enabling it to house a large number of pigeons. Whitewashed, the interior retains some of its original framework, as well as the wooden ramp leading up to the pigeon huts.

This staircase, known as the "royal staircase", owes its fame to a famous legend dating back to 1650, featuring the young King Louis XIV, a fruit tree and a monk. Indeed, the young king Louis XIV had come to Bourg to escape the troubles of the Fronde in Bordeaux. Legend has it that while strolling through a garden in Bourg, he wanted to pick a fig. The fig was out of reach for the twelve-year-old king. A monk came to his aid and lifted him off the ground. However, a guard saw the scene and locked the monk up for the crime of lèse Majesté, i.e. having touched the king. Fortunately, Queen Mother Anne of Austria pardoned the monk. In memory of this event, the inhabitants planted many fig trees throughout the town, inspiring the 20th-century Bourg confectioner to create the village's emblematic confection, the Figue de Bourg.

Nestled atop a large cliff, the village of Bourg – whose origins date back to the Gallo-Roman era – is a classified “Ancient Village”. Fortified by the English and encircled by ramparts, people could enter Bourg via its gates, three of which are still visible today. Its domination by the English, its geographic location and the reputation of its wines caused the town to grow and beautify over the centuries. Bourg is divided between two levels connected by a maze of small streets: the upper town (shops, craftsmen and the citadel) and the lower town (port, wash houses and water activities).

The old parish church, dedicated to Saint-Cyr, a young martyr of the 3rd century, dates from the 12th century. The facade is from the XIVth century. An old plan shows us the primitive shape of this building surrounded by its cemetery. One notices the chapel built in 1845 to house the remains of the Marquis de Lamoignon. Its epitaph was built in 1854 in neo-gothic style by the architect Gustave Alaux and consecrated by Cardinal Donnet in 1856. The Romanesque façade has been preserved. In 1867, the Stations of the Cross were put in place, the first tribune was built, the choir was enlarged, then the steps in the church were moved forward, the altar was moved and the sacristy was enlarged.

Originally, there was only a small opening at the top of a rampart wall for the sewage to run down the wall towards the port. In 1849, when a sewage evacuation system was put in place for reasons of hygiene, the wall was breached. A staircase was also built, providing a link between the two parts of the city.
