In 1453, the famous Battle of Castillon, which gave its name to the town, marked the end of the Hundred Years' War with the victory of the French over the English. From the station of Lamothe-Montravel, a nice walk through the vineyards. Once arrived at St Michel de Montaigne, discover the Romanesque church, and the library tower of Montaigne.

Come to discover the loop of excursion of Lamothe Montravel; in the borough, admire the church Saint Paixent as well as the town hall sheltered in a medieval tower, only vestige of the fortress of former days. Near the loop, in the plain of Lamothe Montravel, in Colly, between the Dordogne and the Lidoire, the battle of Castillon took place on 17 July 1453. General John Talbot, who commanded the English army, was defeated and killed. A monument commemorates the event.

In 1908, a young English student, T E Lawrence, became fascinated with the medieval period. He decided to cycle around France on the trail of Richard the Lionheart. After Castillon, he heads for St Michel de Montaigne where he will discover with emotion the tower of the Great Man. Then he heads for the Isle valley. He crosses Montpeyroux, which keeps the traces of a rich history. Past the ruined dungeon of the castle of Gurson, he crosses Carsac and Saint Martin and admires their Romanesque churches. Arriving at Ménestérol behind the church, the river bears witness to the developments made in the 19th century for river transport. The traditional cob and wood architecture of some of the houses is a reminder of the proximity of the Double forest, and as you go up the valley, the bridges over the river alternate with the tunnels under the railway until you reach the station at Mussidan.

While walking along this circuit, pay attention! You will discover at the bend of a path, or beyond a fence, testimonies of the past: wells, dovecotes, mills. You can also meet winegrowers who will tell you about their passion and let you taste their wines.

Spared by the flames that destroyed part of the castle in 1885, the historic tower of Montaigne stands proudly in the heart of a vast park. It was here, at the gates of the purple Périgord, 40 kilometres from Bergerac, that Michel de Montaigne was born and died. The highlight of this hike is a visit to the Tour de Montaigne. The chapel, the room where Montaigne breathed his last breath and Montaigne's library are open to the public. This is where the great humanist wrote his Essays, between 1571 and 1592. The personality of Michel de Montaigne seems to be still present in this intact place. Lawrence of Arabia, who visited it in 1908, recounts his emotion at seeing the library "of the Great Man". Before leaving, enjoy the view of the Lidoire valley and the gardens surrounding the castle.

The Porte du Midi, also known as the "Iron Gate", is the only vestige of the fortifications of the ancient medieval city of Castillon-la-Bataille This gate, which dates back to the 13th century, has a wall thickness of more than 7 metres. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was transformed to be used, in particular, as a dwelling place. A passage allows to cross it: this last one is vaulted in full arch (Vienne Y Vienne street side) and vaulted in broken arch (river side) The two other medieval gates of Castillon (the North Gate and the West Gate) disappeared in the 19th century.

The Church of St. Symphorien, which dates from the 18th century, is a baroque building, built from the plans of the architect Portier Its financing was made possible by a bequest made to the town at the end of the 17th century by Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Marshal of Turenne (who was Viscount of Castillon). The interior of the church reveals a decoration of Ionic order (a style inspired by ancient Greece). The nave, composed of a semi-circular vault, is illuminated by magnificent lunettes. One of the peculiarities of this building is to have, within its walls, a war memorial.

Formerly known as Castillon sur Dordogne, Castillon-la-Bataille has lived through a painful medieval and renaissance past. It became a border town under German occupation, due to its geographical location, with the demarcation line passing at the city gates.

This parish church was built in the 19th century, at a time when worship was being abandoned in the old church of Saint-Martin. The will is then to build a larger building to accommodate the parishioners of Mouliets, Villemartin, and Piquessègue. The church has a single nave vaulted in depressed arch. Also inside, we find, on the reverse side of the west facade, small vaulted and painted chapels called cul-de-four. The church tower, now square, was once pointed.

The chapel of Villemartin dates back to the late Romanesque period (late 12th, early 13th century). The entrance is on the south side through a magnificent portal with a poly-lobed archivolt resting on two columns with sculpted capitals. The chapel is arranged in three bays: the first two make up the nave and the third the sanctuary. This building, built on a rectangular plan, ends with a flat chevet lit by three ogival windows. The chapel belonged to the order of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem.

Located in the hamlet of Capitourlan, in Castillon-la-Bataille, this chapel has a particularity which lies in its orientation. It is indeed turned towards the West (whereas most churches are turned towards the East). The entrance to the building (which is therefore to the East) is crowned by a bell tower. This chapel is called "cimeterial", because it is surrounded by a small cemetery.

The church of Saint-Magne is basically a Romanesque building. It is dedicated to Saint-Magne, an Italian religious who was bishop of Anagni and who died as a martyr in the 3rd century. Many monks, who settled in the parish in the Middle Ages, made the cultivation of vines and the production of wine flourish (activities that are still widespread today in the commune and the region). One section of the nave of the church, which is still in Romanesque style, has a pointed barrel vault. In the 18th century, a reconstruction phase was launched. Side aisles were added to part of the nave.
