The Porte du Midi, also known as the "Iron Gate", is the only vestige of the fortifications of the ancient medieval city of Castillon-la-Bataille
This gate, which dates back to the 13th century, has a wall thickness of more than 7 metres. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was transformed to be used, in particular, as a dwelling place. A passage allows to cross it: this last one is vaulted in full arch (Vienne Y Vienne street side) and vaulted in broken arch (river side)
The two other medieval gates of Castillon (the North Gate and the West Gate) disappeared in the 19th century.
