La montée un peu raidedans le bois de la Garde est récompensée par de belles vues sur le Vercors. 1 - Charmes sur l'Herbasse - 250 m After having parked on Champ de Mars square or nearby, start the walk from the townhall (information board about local heritage here). Head opposite up ruelle du puits, cross the road then continue up montée du cordonnier (Renaissance houses), turn left onto the small road then right in front of the school Notre Dame de la Garde. A somewhat steep slope in the forest takes you uphill to a château where you turn right onto the road. After about 300m, turn right, on the bend, onto the path emerging into undergrowth. When you come to the junction go over the road and continue on the path. After the field the path takes a hairpin turn before heading downhill. At the bottom turn right and walk 100m before turning left between trees (stock-car circuit on the right) Continue ahead for about 500m, cross the D121 then carry on past the farm until you reach the crossroads. 2 - Le Biquet - 260 m Follow the wide uphill path to the right towards Bois de Bard. After about 700m (tree-felling platform) turn onto the uphill path in undergrowth Carry on along the main path until you reach the large post. 3 - Bois de Bard - 390 m Continue ahead towards the Pinates. Carry on down the main path then turn right onto the road (view of Vercors mountain range) and continue for about 1.1km to the crossroads. 4 - Les Pinates - 336 m Turn left going towards Charmes for about 400m then on the bend, go left down the path des Roches. When you get to the road turn right then left onto the D67 taking you back to the starting point.

Further up take the road to the right. 2 - Les Pinates At the crossroads go straight over onto the road Pinates to the junction Balayer. 3 – Balayer Go up towards the combe du frêne and after the farmyard follow a path leading gently down into woodland. 4 - Combe du frêne Continue ahead. Cross the D584 and head opposite uphill into the woods. 5 - La LimiteGo to the junction le Gros Chêne. 6 - Gros Chêne Bear right onto the path 7 - Champ Guinot Follow the track facing you going up into the woods. At the educational farm go onto the small road leading to the D584. 8 - Le Laca Cross the road and follow the path Laca. Further down bear left onto a track going down into woodland, past a field then the back of a house then through thicket. Continue until you get to the road. 9 - Les BlachesTurn right onto a path starting off quite level then climbing up towards an easier trail. Keep on turning right before getting to a road. Turn left and carry on ahead. At the end take the path furthest to the left, going up into the woods. Continue 170m then turn right onto a path cutting across in front of you. 10 - Bois de Bard Bear sharp left and when you get to the fork take the track on the right downhill. Further down the path becomes more pleasant. Turn right down the gentle slope to the farm building Biquet. 11 - Le Biquet Continue along the road to the right then on the D67 taking you back to the starting point in Charmes sur l’Herbasse

The secret villages are worth discovering as you wander along the beautiful roads in hilly Drôme. Complete the picture at Champos Lake in St-Donat for a refreshing and relaxing stop. The trail is mostly in woodland. After a first uphill climb you then head down into a dale where you will certainly enjoy yourself on some very impressive, technical sections. Then you will discover the Bois de Sizay, as you go up its narrow paths and wide tracks. The descent towards Saint Donat is on a wide, however, rough track . Be careful not to lose control here. 1 - Pont de Chabran - 220 m The trail starts on the gravel path leaving the car park. 2 - Les Bâties - 226 m Continue ahead uphill then turn right. When you reach the road carry on to Balayer. 3 - Balayer - 330 m Turn left onto the road becoming a track further on. 4 - Combe du Frêne - 300 m Turn left onto an impressive downhill slope.5 - Combe du Loup - 260 m Continue ahead towards la Combe Oternaud.6 - Combe Oternaud - 255 m Turn right and head towards the Bois de Sizay.7 - Bois de Sizay - 270 m Cross the road : Careful traffic ! Go onto the small track leading uphill. 8 - Combe de Sizay - 325 m Go right up the slope. 9 - Le Nordmann - 340 m Continue as far as la Fontaine du Loup.10 - Fontaine du Loup - 355 m Turn left downhill to get back onto the main track. 11 - La Limite - 330 m Turn left onto the track.12 - Gros Chêne - 345 m Carry on along the track 13 - Les Fauries - 320 m Turn right until you reach the road a little further on. Go down towards the hamlet. Go through then take the path on the left. Continue through woodland then between fields. When you reach the road turn right : Careful traffic ! Turn first left. Turn right and go through the housing estate. When you get to the end turn left. At the top turn left and follow the fencing down. Continue through woodland until you reach the road. Turn left onto the road : Careful traffic ! Head back to the starting point at the car park.

A very beautiful trail around the area of Herbasse with a dramatic change in scenery : rough and sandy along with a more mediterranean vegetation. . 1 - Pont de Chabran - 200 m Start the trail along the wide gravel track. 2 - Les Bâties - 226 m At the following junction turn right onto the path. 3 - Balayer - 330 m Heads towards Combe du Frêne.4 - Combe du Frêne - 300 m Turn left here. 5 - Combe du Loup Head down an exciting section at this point. 6 - Combe Oternaud - 255 m Head towards Bois de Sizay.7 - Bois de Sizay - 270 m Cross the road onto the path opposite going uphill; strenuous but thrilling at the same time. 8 - Combe de Sizay 9 - Le Nordmann10 - Gros Chêne - 345 m Turn right. 11 - Champ Guinot - 345 m Head opposite up a pretty tough and technical section. 12 - Le Laca Head north then take the path on the left leading to Ratières. In Ratières take the road on the right signed up Saint Avit then the path on the left going downhill. Continue ahead for about 2km on this wide track, sometimes gritty depending on the time of year, until you reach the road. Turn left up the path going into the woods and continue to Saint Andéol. When you reach the priory go onto the path going downhill to the right. At the bottom, take the sandy path heading up the road. Turn left onto a path going uphill. The first part is quite steep through woodland going down to fruit fields. Continue ahead to the junction. Take the path going downhill. At the bottom come out onto the main road and turn left which will take you back to Pont de Chabran.

This very pleasant trail is fine for good beginners. However a few sections are rather technical. After the first uphill incline the track goes through woodland and then onto the first downhill slope. When you get to the bottom a succession of bends make it quite amusing. After the stock car circuit a fast and interesting path takes you up to the top of the hill then along the hillside. After the village, the return journey is a succession of wide paths back to Saint Donat. 1 - Pont de Chabran - 220 m Leave the car park on the gravel path. 2 - Les Bâties - 226 m Go uphill then turn right. Once back on the road continue ahead to Balayer.3 - Balayer - 330 m Turn right.4 - Les Pinates - 336 m Turn left and about 500m further on, take the wide track on the left then turn right heading towards the crossroads Bois de Bard. 5 - Bois de Bard - 390 m Carry on along the path to the right then begin to head downhill towards a wider path taking you to a farm. 6 - Biquet - 260 m Turn left then cross the D121 onto a wide track facing you : Careful traffic ! Go round the stock car track and up into the woods. Once at the top turn right and go along the field then along the hillside until you reach the road. Turn right onto the road going round the château. At the first houses take the small path starting from the bend. Go onto the road to the right and continue ahead until you reach the D67. Turn right and head towards the village : Careful traffic ! 150m after the roundabout turn left and go through a housing estate then continue ahead on the path. Turn right between fields then right again onto the path. Take the D121 to the left : Careful traffic ! Just after the bridge take the wide path on the right as far as the road. Turn right onto the road and continue for about 900m. Turn right onto the wide path. When you get to the cabin turn right and head to the road. Turn right onto the D53 heading for Saint Donat : Careful traffic ! At the roundabout turn right onto the D67 going up towards Lake Champos : Careful traffic ! Return to the car park at Pont de Chabran

Follow the road 2 - Champos - 240 m Turn left going under the road then after the tunnel go round the field on the right side and bear right towards the roches sableuses (smalt) Go along the wire fencing; the path goes up into woodland for about 800m then emerges onto the road. Carry on along the road for about 300m and in the distance, admire the view of the Vercors mountains. When you get to the equestrian centre turn left.3 - Les Pinates - 336 m Turn left.4 - Balayer - 330 m Continue ahead towards the Bois de Sizy then down the path on your right into woodland.5 - Combe du Frêne - 300 m Turn left onto the path taking you to Combe du Loup. Follow the main sheltered, sandy path for about 3km (careful, the going is quite rough in some places) 6 - Combe du Loup - 260 m7 - Combe Oternaud - 255 m 8 - Les Bâties - 226 m The path leaves Combe Oternaud then carries on along a gravel road for 1km before reaching the car park.

From the village take the D583 to Margès. 1 - 1,8 km In the village turn right onto the D538 “route d’Hauterives”. 2 - 3,3 km At the roundabout turn right onto the D67 towards Crépol. 3 - 5,1 km Turn right onto “route des Combes”. 4 - 7,3 km Continue on the “route des Biards”. 5 - 8,1 km Turn right onto “route des Crêtes”. 6 - 9,9 km Leave “route des crêtes” turning left onto the small road. 7 - 11 km In Reculais turn left onto the D155 and continue to Le Chalon. 8 - 14,3 km In the village turn right onto the D867 to Saint-Michel-de-Savasse. 9 - 18,3 km When you get to St-Michel turn right onto the D52 signed up Génissieux. 10 - 20,4 km Turn left onto “route de Desviage” and continue to Geyssans. 11 - 23,4 km Go through the village and follow the signs “Saint-Ange” to the hilltop church. 12 - 26,1 km Continue on the road to St-Ange. 13 - 27,9 km Turn right towards “gué de Mortevieille”. 14 - 28,2 km Turn left onto “route de l’Arberge”. 15 - 28,6 km Turn first right returning to Arthémonay.

Along the way discover all the features of hilly Drôme, including the most mysterious ones like : the panorama of the Alps and the untroubled dales offering very different and gentle landscapes along with its gourmet know-how or even the pebble, stone and rammed earth architecture. 1 - 0 km The route starts along the lake of Champos heading towards the forest of Chambarans with its abundance of different tree species, fauna and wetland. 2 - 30 km After the village of Roybon in Isère, the trail overlooks the Galaure valley arriving in Hauterives where you can visit the famous Palais Idéal, a masterpiece of art brut. 3 - 75 km You will then head down to Saint Vallier and on the way enjoy magnificent views over the hills of Drôme and Vivarais. From Saint Vallier the circuit carries on along an alternative route to the ViaRhôna cycling track, up and down the gentle hills of Drôme des Collines with a view of the Vercors mountains and the Rhône river. 4 - 89 km After Chantemerle les Blés, with its remarkable Roman church, you then head down towards the wide stretches of countryside of Herbasse and its sandy landscapes.

The Gare de Romans was opened in 1864 by the Compagnie Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée to serve the Valence-Moirans line, enabling the town to develop economically. Opposite the station is a neighborhood built in the 19th century by the Roman bourgeoisie, enriched by the shoe industry.

The Way of the Cross known as the "Great Journey" and the Cemetery-Calvary of the Recollets, which marks the end of it, is a unique monument. Listed as a Historic Monument, it comprises 21 stations scattered around the historic center and 19 stations on the calvary site. The calvary was founded in 1516 by Romanet Boffin, a Roman merchant, in imitation of the one in Fribourg, Switzerland. A place of pilgrimage, it was intended to replace the pilgrimage to Jerusalem in the Holy Land, which had become very costly and difficult as a result of the Turkish Conquest. Numerous Stations of the Cross were built in Europe between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th centuries. From the outset, the Romans Pilgrimage was a great success. The Stations of the Cross and the Calvary have undergone many vicissitudes. Today, it remains a Living Heritage §. Every year on Good Friday, several hundred people make the Grand Voyage. This close-knit company sub-contracts for famous brands and also produces their own brand of shoes "Made in Romans". Romans was historically France’s shoemaking capital, and for several decades the town’s footwear industry had a worldwide reputation. In the 2010s, new brands and artisan shoemakers established here, reviving the local footwear industry. This living museum includes shoemaking workshops open to the public and a shop selling a variety of shoe brands made exclusively in Romans.

The 37m high Tower, built in molasse, built in the 12th century, is placed at the top of an old gate of the first city walls. It then housed the dungeon of the 'fortress Montségur' until 1835. It owes its name to the automaton, dressed in the uniform of the soldiers of the Revolution, who strikes the hours with his hammer. In the 15th century, the Consuls ordered a monumental clock from Pierre Cudrifin, watchmaker from Fribourg in Switzerland. It measures 2.60m in height. The tower was restored in 2021. It was on Place Jules Nadi (the most shaded and busiest promenade in Romans at the end of the 19th century) that the kiosk was built in 1888, with musical societies already in the habit of giving concerts on this place. The city and its inhabitants have been enriched thanks to the development and prosperity of the shoe industry: it is the commercial travelers who take the initiative to build a kiosk in our city. Funding was found through subscriptions, a municipal grant and a big party on October 2, 1887. The construction of the kiosk also corresponds to the commemoration of the centenary of the States of the Dauphiné and the arrival in garrison of the 75th infantry regiment. The actively carried out work enabled the inauguration on June 3, 1888. On July 22, the President of the Republic, Sadi Carnot, came to Romans to lay the foundation stone for the Monument to the States of the Dauphiné. He is received at the Town Hall by the Mayor and can thus admire the kiosk. It Has been restored in 2018 and is once again hosting concerts and cultural events

The Josaphat staircase takes its name from the valley located east of Jerusalem, near the Mount of Olives, and crossed by the Cedron, a watercourse represented in Romans by the Savasse torrent which is now covered. In 1516, a wealthy Romanais merchant named Romanet Boffin founded a Way of the Cross in Romans and erected several chapels in the streets of the city. The Stations of the Cross traces the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to the Ascension. It is composed of 41 oratory stations and ends at the Calvary des Récollets (Golgotha). Quite naturally, the Romanians then name several places in reference to the Stations of the Cross or the City of Jerusalem. This is how the Josaphat staircase takes its name from the valley located east of Jerusalem, near the Mount of Olives, and crossed by the Kidron, a stream represented in Romans by the torrent of the Savasse today covered. The Mount of Olives itself gave its name to the Montolivet coast, at the foot of the Chapeliers coast. There are stations called 'The Mount of Olives' and 'The Prayer of Jesus at the Garden of Olives'. The procession of the Great Journey is still organized every Good Friday.

New! Come and discover the Maison du Mouton, one of the oldest residences in Romans, now a Maison du patrimoine! A free space open to all, inviting you to discover the heritage of the Isère Valley and the Drôme des Collines. History Located in the first urban core of the city, the Maison du Mouton is one of the oldest buildings in Romans. On the street and on the courtyard, its two Gothic facades are indeed dated from the end of the 13th or the beginning of the 14th century. Ashlar stones, painted decorations, extent of the spaces indicate that it belonged to a well-off family. The woolen cloth trade then made the fortune of the city: perhaps one should see in it the explanation of its name. A sheep’s head has adorned the facade since its origin. Very deteriorated, it was returned during major restoration works carried out between 2020 and 2024. The stone used probably comes from the molasses quarries located in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère. These quarries, about fifteen kilometers apart, were exploited from antiquity to the 19th century. Once extracted, the molasse, fine stoneware and easy to cut, circulated by river, both towards Romans and towards Valencia. For the framework and intermediate floors, softwood was mainly used. Beautiful medieval house abandoned during the 20th century, the Maison du Mouton was acquired by the City of Romans in 2020. Open to the public after restoration since 2025, it now houses one of the two sites of the Heritage House of the Land of Art and History of Valence Romans Agglo. The public there discovers the history and architectural heritage of Romans and the Drôme des collines. In Valence, the visitor can continue his visit at the Maison des Têtes, second site dedicated to local heritage. Originally, the ground floor had a commercial or artisanal vocation. The large bays being closed by wooden shutters, the light came from square-shaped light cannons, drilled into the masonry and located high up. The French oak ceiling was restored during the restoration work. It is through this space that the public enters the Heritage House today. An educational workshop also welcomes teachers and their classes. The rear facade of the house is remarkably preserved in its 14th century state. Under the modern staircase, the original straight staircase has been partially preserved. It gave access to the floors from the outside, from the courtyard. The frame of a well is also visible in the masonry. At the back of the house, a building was erected in the 15th or 16th century. This outbuilding could have served as an annex for residential and service uses. Upstairs, a majestic room nearly six meters high corresponds to the aula of the medieval house. Both a reception room and a space for private use, it was the heart of the residence. Heated by an imposing chimney now disappeared, the hall was lit by two tall gothic bays, geminate and trilobed. In front of them, there are seat cushions. These benches arranged in the window recess served as seats. The second floor was able to house the housing of the servants and storage spaces. The offices of the Heritage-Country service for art and history are now located there. Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous traces of painted decorations, which reveal a pronounced medieval taste for color and geometric patterns. In the aula, a decoration dated from the 14th century, composed of yellow squares on a red background and white borders, was discovered during the work. It has been preserved in situ. In this same room, a decor from the Hôtel de Loulle presents a frieze of coats of arms decorated with plant motifs, in shades of black, red, yellow and blue. The quality of these paintings indicates that high-ranking families occupied the houses in the neighborhood. On the second floor, a simpler decoration, imitating an apparatus of stones, was also discovered. It covered the entire space, in a common approach to many buildings of the same period.

Few chapels from this era remain intact on their orginal sites but as it was partly sunk into clay and isolated from urban pollution it is relatively well preserved. St Peter's recovers its former elegance 1000 years later, after 8 years of restoration work ending in 2008. Catholic services still take place sometimes in the chapel.

On the foundations of an old mill burned in 1971, the boss and his team have reconstructed this country inn where you will taste the farm products cooked in a wood oven.
