A former pilgrimage route of 180 kilometers from the Périgord to Rocamadour, this magnificent route is now marked out, and allows you to cross the vineyards and hills of Bergerac in complete safety, before skirting the green Dordogne valley and its cliffs, to arrive in the valley of the Ouysse. A few kilometres from Cadouin, we cross the village of Urval. The 14th century communal oven and the fortified church constitute an architectural ensemble not to be missed. At the gates of Belvès, in the valley, stands the bell tower of Capelou, an important place of pilgrimage. Then, as soon as you arrive in Belvès, you can admire the archbishop's tower, which is one of the seven bell towers that characterize the town. Before leaving the city, do not forget to contemplate the Bontemps hotel, the castle, the Auditor's Tower, the belfry and the Consuls' house.

"Two Summers in Guyenne, chronicle of the wayside and waterside" recounts his travels in the Dordogne At the start of this fifth stage, you will admire the abbey of Cadouin which, like all Cistercian abbeys, was built in a thick forest that is still omnipresent today. The abbey was founded by Geraud de Salles who lived as a hermit for a few years, before being affiliated to the Cistercian order in 1119 Then go to Le Buisson de Cadouin and its Romanesque church in the hamlet of Cabans Finally, at the end of this stage and of the itinerary, you will go to the Buisson de Cadouin station, opened in August 1863 on the Niversac-Agen line.

This 5 kilometers circuit between fields, hamlets and forest is marked out with small markers. This walk, possible in family, will allow you to discover the natural heritage of Béssède. You will also discover the abbey of Cadouin: A masterpiece of Gothic art listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the abbey of Cadouin is located in the heart of the forest of Bessède between the Dordogne and Couze rivers. Founded in 1115, the abbey church, the sacristy and the Romanesque base of the buildings remain from that time. In 1119, the young abbey of Cadouin became a Cistercian abbey in the lineage of Pontigny, which is itself one of the four daughters of Citeaux. The flamboyant Gothic cloister dates from the end of the 15th century.

As you leave the village of Cadouin, the forest immediately comes into view. This is the most densely wooded part of the department, with few clearings. To the north, the Bessède forest massif blends chestnut groves with the orange trunks of pines, giving it a very special atmosphere. Villages suddenly appear at the last moment, but remain few and far between, located in small valleys or on the outskirts of the Bessède. Valleys are rare and shallow on this undulating plateau. Small roads and paths criss-cross the area.

Forests are omnipresent here. Woodlands occupy the slopes of the valleys and the meagre terrain of the plateau, contributing to the highly diversified landscape mosaic of this corner of Périgord. Deciduous trees dominate, notably pedunculate oak, chestnut and sessile oak. Maritime pine also plays an important role in the mixed stands and coniferous forests of the Bessède forest.

A little away from the charming village of Montferrand-du-Périgord, accessible by a pleasant path, the Romanesque Chapel of Saint-Christophe is a small church that is well worth a visit. It has a bell tower from the 12th century, rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries, and a small nave where you can observe a low wall with a fishbone device. The Saint-Christophe Chapel is classified as a Historic Monument. You will particularly notice its paintings, a part of which was unfortunately destroyed after 1847. The oldest date back to the 11th century. They represent the liberation of a prisoner by Saint-Léonard, the Pantocrator surrounded by the Tetramorph and the Annunciation and Saint-Christophe.
