Created over twenty years ago for mountain bike enthusiasts, the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT is a mythical route, a collector's item like few others in France. Today, the GTMC-VTT is back in the spotlight, bigger, more accessible, more modern. It's now a complete crossing of the Massif Central, from the great Morvan lakes in Burgundy to the Mediterranean. 1360 km to cover three regions, ten départements, four regional nature parks and one national park, and discover the exceptional succession of the Massif's great landscapes, as well as the people and heritage of these highlands. The GTMC is also becoming more welcoming. Whether it's your first experience of mountain bike touring over a few days or a long-distance raid, the GTMC now lends itself to a wide range of activities and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, from the gentlest to the most committed. From the wooded curves of the north to the slopes of the Auvergne volcanoes, from the sharp relief of the Grands Causses and Cévennes to the descent through the garrigue to the sea, there's a GTMC for everyone! Sentier Pierre-Auguste Renoir - duration: 4h - marking: white and green and then yellow and red. To see during your trip: setting of Renoir's painting "les Laveuses", viewing points of Essoyes (inpired place's Renoir), Saint Michel's and Saint Bernard's chapels (ruins). Nearby: Resistance museum, church and salt loft in Mussy-sur-Seine, village and church of Les Riceys.

The covered market replaces the one that disappeared in the fire of 1282 at the end of the 15th century. It was modified in the 17th century to stabilize it. A span was removed to build a hard limestone gable. The weekly market is always there. As well as the traditional fat poultry fair (it has existed for more than 90 years) which takes place on the second Saturday of December each year.

Saint-Martin Church is located in the heart of the village of Egreville. It is built on the foundations and some walls of an earlier chapel that disappeared in a large fire in the 13th century. It was damaged during the hundred-year war and rebuilt in the 15th century. The belfry that served as a watchtower is attached to the church in the sixteenth century and becomes its main entrance. The arrow is added in the seventeenth.

In a beautiful 18th-century mansion, exhibition of fine art collections featuring the pre-impressionist painter Chintreuil, history around General Joubert, hero of the French Revolution, ethnology and a cabinet of curiosities. Temporary exhibitions. Founded in 1866 around a gallery of the illustrious men of Pont-de-Vaux, the Musée Chintreuil is housed in a handsome late 17th-century townhouse. It boasts a fine art collection featuring Antoine Chintreuil's luminous, intimate landscapes, a forerunner of Impressionism, and a room devoted to calligraphy and works by Jacques Le Roux. Finally, there's a cabinet of curiosities, featuring animals and minerals, objects brought back from faraway lands and exotic birds. The museum organizes temporary exhibitions every season. The first purpose of the underground galeries was the explotation of materials for the drapera industry of Provins. Then, they served many others: a shelter, a warehouse, a cave and even a gathering place for occults, as numerous symboles and old writings can witness. Regular guided departures in groups of 25 people maximum, for reasons of security and preservation of the site. Our advice: as the monument is in great demand, we recommend you to book your tour time in advance by phone.

By the 40th day after mobilisation the German High Command expected to have brought the French and British armies to a decisive battle and destroyed them. This conclusion to Schlieffen’s famous Plan relied on the Russians taking at least this length of time to mobilise via their poor railway system. The BEF played a small but significant part in the battle of the Marne even though Field Marshall French had seriously contemplated removing his men from the action to reform and rest. However, this major battle was largely won through the determination and courage of the French soldiers and their leaders. The French snatched a conclusive victory from what looked like an imminent defeat. The German High Command failed in its attempt to capture Paris and force the French government to capitulate. The ‘race to the sea’ now followed, in which the Allies and Central Powers atempted to outflank each other. The line of trenches was then settled from the North Sea to Switzerland. The Allies and the Central Powers now knew that the war would continue far longer than they had thought. The next few years would be spent in learning how to fight a new kind of war with new weapons in the air and on the ground. The price of this process would be paid in blood.

Lac du Der is a natural area of national and international importance, where more than 310 species of birds can be observed throughout the year, depending on the migration season. Located opposite the lake, the Chantecoq observatory is the largest of the Lac du Der observatories. It is the largest of the observatories on Lac du Der, offering early-morning viewing of Sandhill Cranes during the migration period (October to March). Birdwatching guides are available to help you discover this incredible wildlife.

At the Village Musée du Der, you can discover the incredible story of the three villages that disappeared to make way for the construction of Lac du Der (the largest artificial lake in Europe). Several typical buildings were saved from destruction or drowning and rebuilt on the museum site: the church in Nuisement-aux-Bois, the Blacksmith's House, the dovecote, etc.

Gallo-Roman villas, a sanctuary where water and sun cults were celebrated, and many other treasures from the Gallo-Roman era were hidden beneath the Liffolois subsoil... Excavations have brought them to light, along with a smoking room unique in the Roman world and a Flavian mosaic. These objects are displayed and showcased on two levels in this museum, which was once the site of the forester's house. The collections range from prehistory to the Gallo-Roman and medieval periods...

Near the church of Liffol-le-Grand, this war memorial was inaugurated on the 17th of April 1921. Commemorating the two major global conflicts of the 20th century, its erection was decided by the town in October 1919; in the press release published on the 25th of October, we can read in French that “this memorial will be very sober, but of a refined and delicate taste, and will be 4m70 (15 feet) high. The base will be made entirely of Brittany granite. The inscriptions will be engraved in granite and with gold leafs. The statue that topped the base will be in white marble of Carrara.” Built by the Les marbreries générales de Paris (Gourdon Dir.), given by “Liffol-le-Grand to its heroic children who died for France”, this monument made of Vosges granite and marble is topped by a statue symbolising France crowning its heroes. We can see engraved on this war memorial 77 names of men who perished during World War I and 13 men during World War II.

In the heart of the town of furniture and seating craftsmen, you will find the Saint-Vincent hall-fountain, built in 1551. The building owes its present form and condition to the restoration of 1760, where a part of the roof structure has been preserved. The water weas brought there thanks to a wooden pipe.

Sartes is a village located in a peaceful valley, by the Mouzon river and on the Roman road from Lyon to Trier. You can visit its church dedicated to St Evence. It dates from the 19th century and contains a stone Pietà from the 17th century.

Among Grand's most emblematic monuments, the basilica and the mosaic it houses are in an exceptional state of preservation. The mosaic also stands out for its size (232 m2), its geometric decoration, and the presence of animals around the central painting, the emblema. The exhibition space invites visitors to discover this rich heritage, through a collection of sculptures, witnesses to daily life, and also rare ivory, bone and wood objects discovered in the village's many wells.

The area between the rampart and the amphitheatre was occupied in Antiquity by a vast public building, which could have been a thermal complex if we consider the remains discovered in the 19th century under the neighbouring orchards. Excavations carried out between 2010 and 2016 uncovered a gallery leading to these buildings. This gallery, 6 m wide and over 40 m long, was distinguished by the richness of its decoration, given the large number of marble fragments and painted plaster found. The square in front of the portico was crossed by an underground pipe that probably connected the spring beneath the church with the thermal baths it fed. A selection of the objects unearthed during these excavations is on display in the Mosaic Museum.
