From Xaintrailles, on the border of the hillsides and the forest, there is a deep circular panorama. It is one of the highest points in the department. Situated on a plateau overlooking the moor and the rich plain of the Garonne, it was created according to an elongated plan around its castle. Today, it is a village whose vocation is essentially wine-growing. You can discover the many vineyards along the walk which will also lead you to the village of Pompiey, which hides like a surprise in its green setting with its rural landscapes alternating between fields and forests. It was distinguished very early on by the cultivation of cork, especially during the 19th century.

The panorama at the start is followed by a passage through a pine forest, traditional of this region. The pigeon-houses are of course present there. Avoid walking there, or respect the hunters' instructions, during the passage of the pigeons from October 1st to November 15th.

This short walk overlooking the valleys of the Gélise and the Baïse, offers many views of the castle of Xaintrailles, the bastide of Lavardac, the Mill of the Towers Henri IV, the village of Barbaste and in the background, Nérac, the capital of Albret and the Landes forest.

From the small village of Ambrus, separated from its church and its castle, wander through the vineyards of Buzet and the Landes forest where deciduous and coniferous trees alternate.

This loop does not leave the Landes forest where you will discover vast spaces of coniferous trees, cork oaks but also a wide range of broad-leaved trees where the oaks are predominant.

This loop allows you to penetrate the life of the Landes forest with the help of thematic, playful and educational totems. Along the stony, sandy or sandy paths, you will discover a vegetation made up of conifers, cork oaks but also a wide range of deciduous trees.

Discover Gascony by bike! The Véloroute which goes through the Baïse valley is connected to the Scandibérique. It starts in Barbaste, at the foot of the Moulin des Tours. The itinerary crosses history on the lands of the young Henry of Navarre, future king Henry IV. Passing through Nérac, discover its "Renaissance" castle, its bridges and its old tanneries. Follow in the footsteps of Queen Margot in the Royal Park of La Garenne. Through small quiet roads, you will progress along the Baïse river to the "Mont des Chèvres": Moncrabeau, world famous for its liars' festival. In this village overlooking the valley, take a well-deserved break on the "Trône des Menteurs" before leaving the Albret and the Lot-et-Garonne. You will probably then head for Condom, the Ténarèze and the Gers, home of d'Artagnan, another proud Gascon.

In the heart of the Albret region, between Barbaste and Sos, another section of the Scandibérique (EV3) follows a former railroad line that has since been converted into a greenway. Mostly made of limestone (very fine gravel), the paths are very smooth. For optimum comfort, we recommend you use a VTC or gravel bike. Along the Gélise, you'll gradually discover the impressive Landes forest.

The GR® 654 crosses France from Vézelay in Burgundy. It crosses the Lot-et-Garonne from north to south for almost 150 km, from the plum trees of the Haut-Agenais to the sands of the Landes de Gascogne, passing through the Lot and Garonne valleys.

Situated in the Nérac district, opposite Barbaste on the left bank of the Gélise River, the Moulin des Tours was registered as an historic monument in 1889. This late-13th century fortified windmill and the neighbouring ten-arch Roman bridge, dating back to the 12th century, once formed an important defensive unit. The mill was owned by the Albret family in the 14th century, and the future Henry IV would even sign letters “Henry, the miller from Barbaste” when he was young. According to legend, the four different-sized towers represented the miller’s four daughters. Following a fire in 1937, the buildings have been almost entirely rebuilt and are open to visitors.

The feudal site of Château de Xaintrailles has been known since the 12th century. In the 15th century, Jean Poton de Xaintrailles, marshal of France, military governor of Aquitaine and a former comrade-in-arms of Joan of Arc, had the present château built on the foundations of his ancestors' château, retaining the central keep. Inhabited ever since, the château and its site have undergone numerous transformations to adapt to the needs of each century. The surrounding moats were filled in and an entrance courtyard created around 1750, and it has been in the same family since 1868, who are committed to preserving its traditions. Situated on the ancient Roman road of the Ténarèze (linking Bordeaux to the central Pyrenees), the village is the birthplace of Poton de Xaintrailles, companion of Joan of Arc who chased the English out of Aquitaine and was Marshal of France. He left the village the 12th century castle, which was later converted into a manor house. The 15th century church is also worth seeing.

In Ambrus, you enter the Landes forest, with its immense pine forests and streams. Very early on, the rocky shelters of the Avizon and Rusthe rivers served as refuges for prehistoric man. Later, the Gauls made Ambrus a place of worship due to the presence of numerous venerated fountains. A few steps away from the church, one of these fountains with therapeutic virtues is still present. It is here that since time immemorial, pilgrims have come to make vows and throw a coin. It is up to you to do the same in this bucolic and secret place.

This small Romanesque building, whose origins can be traced back to the 11th century, has a hemicycle chevet closing a single nave flanked to the south by a chapel added in the 19th century. On the west gable, there is a triangular belfry-wall pierced with three bays for the bells. To the left of the bell tower, a north portal, under a canopy in a slightly "tripot et mascagne" style, seems more recent. Only one bay of Romanesque origin remains in the north wall. Inside, there is little light, a total sobriety if we forget the south chapel. The paneled ceiling hides badly a vault that has disappeared This small country church is better known in Albret for its annual pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin. She reigns in Heavy costume over the fountain which offers its clear and abundant water a few steps away on the square, west of the bell tower.

The plantation was carried out on former vineyards, the trees are two to twenty years old. The production is supported by the association of truffle growers of Lot-et-Garonne. The visit of the truffle farm is possible by appointment for individuals and groups.
