Pic de Couar (1989 m)

Very pretty hike above Archail. Superb panorama throughout the walk as well as at the top. Magical passage on the Pas d'Archail, between the summit of the Pic de Couard and the Cucuyon. Very pleasant setting. The departure is from the village of Archail. The road to the village is quite narrow and there can be snow or ice in winter. Arriving in Archail, park in the main square next to the church. Go up the road to the left of the church then turn right at the fork shortly after. If the road is not blocked, there is the possibility of parking a little further away in a small car park at the Vieraron dam. At the Vieraron dam, leave the tarmac to continue on a wide path. Ignore further on a departure on the left and continue straight to reach a track. Cross the latter and go straight to find it higher. Cross the track again to take the path that climbs opposite and reach a complex intersection. Turn left on the path which begins a series of bends further on before reaching Pas d'Archail where there is a refuge and an old shepherd's hut. Continue on the right, pass in front of the refuge then leave the track to take a path on the right. After a few bends, the path widens and the slope softens as it crosses the managed biological reserve of Pic de Couard. Turn right with the path; the slope becomes steeper and the path climbs in bends to the summit of Pic de Couard. There is little signage and if you lose the path, head towards the ridge to the left of the summit. The return is by the same route to the village (D/A).

Col de l'Escuichière

This hike leads to the Belvédère d'Esclangon and the Col de l'Escuichière where there is an Art Refuge by the artist Andy Goldworthy. The route begins in the Bès valley and takes a winding path through clay soils to the pass. Take the D900 towards Barles, to the village of Esclangon (25 min from Digne-les-Bains). At the foot of the village, after the green bridge, turn right onto the road that winds past the houses. Park on the flat ground before the start of the rocky track. Continue on foot on the track for 600 m. Take a small path on the right that climbs into the red clay. The single path climbs steeply through the Aiguebelle forest to the pass. Go down the other side for 100 m and turn off onto the left. We join a wider track below where the Refuge d'Art is located. Fascinated by the black stones veined with white (calcite) found at the edge of the site, Andy Goldworthy created two works from this material, seeking through a meticulous assembly of these stones to draw lines of flow. “Whatever I undertake, I try to understand not only the stone or the leaf but this flow of life, death, decay, energy present in the material. A river is the very expression of flow, connection and movement and I feel the need to find the river in a tree, in a stone. I think that here this sculpture is an attempt to find the flow, the water, in the stone. It is a line of energy, movement and flow.” Andy Goldsworthy

This beautiful loop in the heart of the Bès valley will allow you to discover the Facibelle blade, and several works by three artists from the L'Art en montagne collection of the Gassendi Museum: Paul Armand Gette, herman de vries* and Joan Fontcuberta. From the parking lot, the discovery begins with the two works of Paul Armand Gette: 0 m. (read zero meters). Zero meters is one of the signs used by botanists to indicate the beginning of an area to be observed. In Gette's work, it is a tool for designating certain specificities of the territory and acquires a new dimension, between openness and poetic interpretations. The first, 0 m., Au fond du lit de la rivière (Oligocène !) (2011) is visible opposite the parking lot, on the large rock block to the right of the path going up to Vieil Esclangon. "It takes a lot of attention to discover the small pebbles that have settled in the bed of this Oligocene river (about 28 million years)." Paul Armand Gette. The second will be visible by going up the road 250m higher, on rock strata on your right: 0 m., Les effets du contact (2011). Here the artist invites you to observe the contact between the Tertiary and Secondary layers, to imagine the nature of this contact, its strength or its delicacy… Still on the road, pass the Péouré tunnel: a first work by herman de vries*, parfait (Sanskrit) (2004-2006) is engraved in gold leaf in the rock, on the other side of the Bès. Then take the track on the left (4 mailboxes), until a bridge. The path then goes off to the left. You will climb up to the crest and go back down on the other side. It is there, after several zigzags and 350m that you will find large rocks fallen from the cliff, on the edge of the path: ambulo ergo sum (1999-2001) by herman de vries* is on the one closest to the passage. herman de vries* is a naturalist by profession. His view of the world is strongly influenced by oriental philosophy. For him, nature is sufficient in itself and does not need to be embellished by art: "nature is art", he says, because it is perpetual creation. ambulo ergo sum (Latin, I walk therefore I am) invites the hiker to reflect on the link between the consciousness of existing and the activity of the body, here in this case that of walking. It also evokes the movement of mountains and stones in our Digne region so rich in geological history. From this work you will come across, here and there, the sanctuary of nature and its sacred wood, again by herman de vries* (1999-2003). Through these black spikes topped with a golden tip, the artist demarcates a space where despite the past presence of humans, nature has reclaimed its rights. He invites us to respect and observe this place and this nature. The path climbs gently into the forest, at the next crossroads you will discover another entrance to the sanctuary. The path passes to the left of the Chapelle Saint-Jean. A little before, a last entrance is on the left edge, put on your glasses, it is well hidden in the middle of the beech forest! You will then go over the ridge and go back down on the sunny side to the Lame de Facibelle, a remarkable element of Digne's geology. Go back down to the Bès footbridge. But just before crossing it, you can discover the work of Joan Fontcuberta,La Sainte Famille des Hydropithèques (2011). You have to take the path along the Bès on the left. Make your way between the box trees to climb to the foot of the cliff, and there you will find this bas-relief which is part of a museographic device entirely devoted to falsification. With this project, La route des Hydropithèques, the artist questions science and the museum functioning as places of construction of knowledge and legitimation of values. Other mermaid fossils are thus visible throughout the territory and an installation is presented at the Gassendi museum. After crossing the Bès, go back up the road for 300m. When the road widens, after the parking lot, a 0 m. marking La mer burdigalienne by Paul Armand Gette is visible on the rocky slope located to the right of the road. You are invited, why not, along the way up to the car park, to reflect on the ancient presence of this sea. *we respect the artist's wish not to use capital letters, a form of hierarchy Find the full description of the routes in the L'Art en montagne collection in the Topo guide "L'Art en montagne, 22 hikes to discover contemporary art in the Haute-Provence Geopark" (€15), available at the reception of the Gassendi museum, the Maison Alexandra David-Neel, and the Tourist Office.

Discover the reforestation work carried out at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of forester Prosper Demontzey. From the pass, the path passes through a completely artificial forest that did not exist 200 years ago and was planted to combat erosion. The return journey takes you through the hamlet of Haut Vernet and the Parc Demontzey. Parc Demontzey (1,220 m) - From the car park, climb to the right along the gated forest track. At the crossroads, go straight ahead then take the path on the right at the first hairpin bend. It twists and turns through the forest until it reaches a wider path below a ridge. Follow it to the left, sometimes staying on the ridge, sometimes on the north-facing slope, crossing several ravines and coming to a crossroads. Climb to the right to reach a forest track. Take the path opposite and, after a number of hairpin bends, rejoin the track a little further up. Follow it to the right. After a hairpin bend and a crossing, it ends in a loop. Continue straight ahead on the track, ignoring the side tracks. Just before its end, turn left down a path, cross two ravines and emerge above a clearing. Continue in the same direction, paying close attention to the markings, and rejoin the path a little further on. Descend to the left bank of the ravine and then into the ravine itself. The path then crosses to the right bank and turns into a track to reach the hamlet of Haut Vernet. Le Haut Vernet (1,300 m) - Turn left and drive past the cemetery. Turn right and then straight ahead at the next two crossroads. The track descends through meadows, crosses the Auches ravine and continues through the forest. At a wide bend to the right, go down a path to the left that joins the Demontzey park.

Barles Canyons

A Haute Provence Geopark site to discover by car, bike, bicycle or foot… On the road from Digne les Bains towards Barles, the canyon gets so narrow that it becomes difficult for two cars to cross! This rocky landscape sculpted by nature is even more enjoyable by foot. This geological formation is called “Clues de Barles” in French. The word “clue” comes from Latin “clausus” which means “closed”. Such a small canyon is, therefore, a pass way almost closed, made by a river. The Barles Canyon was made by the Bès River, within limestone dating from the end of the Jurassic or from the early inferior Cretaceous period (i.e. between 155 and 140 million years). The Bès River made its way through vertical and very thick layers, taking advantage of the rock’s weaknesses. At the beginning of the Barles Canyon, contemporary artist Andy Goldsworthy installed one of his stone “Sentinels”. This sculpture is part of the land art itinerary “Refuge d’Art”. Geology around Barles Many geological expeditions were ran around Barles. This location is known worldwide for the diversity and the complexity of its tectonic and sedimentary phenomenon. From the XVIIth Century, at the time of local scientist and philosopher Gassendi, scientists were intrigued by the peculiar layout of rocks in the region of Digne and by the origin of mysterious fossils. However, geology developed in the Southern Alps only at the beginning of the XIXth Century. Before the end of this century, discoveries were made easy by the mountains’ nudity. Cleared by centuries of culture and collect of wood, they let outcrops, slabs and fossils show. Right after 1945, Barles became a base camp for stratigraphy and tectonic specialists, paleontologists…

Musée Promenade

The Musée-Promenade stands as the interpretive centre of the UNESCO Geopark of Haute-Provence. Visitors wander through a sprawling shaded park where pathways and streams intertwine, and where cascades and contemporary artworks come together to create an enchanting setting. "Picnic facilities and open toilets are available. Embark on a journey to encounter butterflies, wander leisurely or learn about the geological history of the region and the global network of UNESCO Geoparks. Internationally renowned artists such as Andy Glodsworthy, Joan Fontcuberta, Sylvie Bussières or Agathe Larpent got their inspiration from here. An area for wandering and creation, overlooking Digne from its rock, it immerses the visitor in a quiet atmosphere leading him to the heart of the Earth’s memory… In the exhibition rooms, the last 300 million years of Earth’s history unfold before our eyes. In ancient times, the alpine ocean was covering the region. Tropical marine aquariums illustrate this memory, juxtaposing colourful living species with stone fossils, of which Ammonites and Ichthyosaurs are the kings. A film tells the history and the evolution of the landscapes of the region as well as the great transformations that the Earth has undergone. It enables each person to grasp the extraordinary richness of this territory. Japanese garden To discover within the Musée Promenade : the Kamaïshi Japanese garden. Of Japanese inspiration, this garden was conceived as a tribute to the twinning of Digne and Kamaïshi around the theme of “Man and the Seasons”. The various stages of a person’s life are represented through progressive blooms along the pathway. Each entrance is marked by a Japanese-style gate, inviting visitors to enter the garden. A bridge, a pond, paths, benches, carefully chosen vegetation, lanterns and pagodas coexist harmoniously in this timeless space accessible to all (with wheelchair access). The Butterfly Trail Between waterfalls and terraces specially designed to host the favourite - or exclusive - plants of butterflies and their caterpillars, in this particular environment on the edge of mediterranean and alpine climate, more than 139 species of butterflies live freely and can be observed from spring to autumn. Randoland Discover the Musée Promenade in a different way: with games and enigmas for kids and touristic pieces of information for parents. With these fun tour sheets, children can join in the visit with delight. The tour is tailored for three age groups: 4-6 years old, 7-9 years old and 9-12 years old. The Haute Provence UNESCO Geopark

Certified by UNESCO, the Global Geoparks Network brings together regions offering different heritages: geological, natural, material and intangible. The Haute Provence Geopark was created in 2000 and was the model for the development of 120 Geoparks worldwide. It covers 60 municipalities in the Alpes de Haute Provence department. It gathers natural and geological sites and offers a journey through over 300 million years of Earth’s history. Sites like the ammonites slab are exceptional, even unique in the world. The Haute Provence Geopark is also rich in its intangible heritage that can be discovered through know how, craftsmanship and local products. It contributes to the local economic development. Some restaurants, accommodations, local producers and services are certified by the Haute Provence Geopark and are committed to upholding this heritage and its values. Promenade Museum A park in the shade, waterfalls, gardens, art work, 300 million years of geological history told by fossils, Mediterranean and tropical aquariums, exhibitions and an art center (CAIRN). Geological sites The Ammonite Slab The most emblematic site of the Haute Provence Geopark. The 320 m² Ammonite Slab boasts over 1,550 fossils, the biggest being over 70 cm! This species allows us to establish that the slab is around 200 million years old. Ichthyosaur Reptile fossil, 90 million years old. Location : La Robine Bird Footprints 20 million years ago, the region of Digne les Bains was a sea basin. Birds walked on the beaches’ wet sand, leaving footprints that were later fossilized. Sea currents that sculpted the seabed 130 million years ago were also fossilized. Barles Canyons After several million years of erosion, the Barles Canyons offer amazing landscapes.
