The Cistercian monastery at Villiers-Canivet was founded in 1127. The abbey buildings suffered badly in the French Revolution and have been under restoration since 1976. They are now in a state where you can get a sense of what the abbey was once like. The remains of the 18th century cloisters, and those of the 16th century, have been preserved. The large defensive gateway built in the 13century and much changed since, has now been put back as close to its original form as possible. Although much work remains to be done, particularly on the abbey church, the walls have been restored and the whole remarkable set of buildings are set in a beautiful park with a large lake, giving a sense of how tranquil a setting the monks had in which to spend their life of prayer.

Legend has it that coming back from game forests, young Duke Robert spotted a young woman washing clothes in the Ante Valley fountain at the foot of the castle. It was Arlette, daughter of Foubert, a fur merchant in Falaise. Robert fell in love with her and made her come to the castle with him. She agreed, but insisted that she enter on horseback by the main gate. During their first night together, Arlette was woken by a dream: a tree, springing from her stomach, cast its shadow over the whole of Normandy and “Great England”. She told Robert, who saw it as a good omen. In fact, a few months after, her son was born whom Robert called William, nicknamed the Bastard.

Saint Gervais church is at the very heart of Falaise. It was probably started just after the conquest of England in 1066, on the command of William the Conqueror and was finished during the reign of Henry I (1100-1135). The consecration and dedication ceremony (to Sts Gervais and Protais) took place in April 1124 in the presence of the King. The original Norman church took the Abbey aux Dames in Caen (on which it depended) as its inspiration. Very few elements of that church are left, some in the south wall of the nave, the lantern-tower and the west front. An archeological dit in 1953 showed that the original choir was like that at Notre-Dame de Guibray, with an apse and two side chapels. The most interesting Norman remains are the capitals carved with profane subjects on the first for southern pillars of the nave. They are like those in Rye, Boscherville and Granville-Saint-Honorine. The rest of the building dates from the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries with alterations in the 18th century. The church was badly damaged in the Battle of Normandy and has been extensively restored.

The first church on the site, built in 840, was destroyed by Philippe Augustus when he conquered Normandy for France. The Battle of Normandy started on D Day - 6 June 1944 - lasted 3 months and put 2 million soldiers in a corner of France that had about a million inhabitants. 150,000 Normans had to evacuate their homes, with an estimated 20,000 killed, mainly as a result of the bombardments. The Falaise area paid its price. The dreadful fighting in the Falaise-Chamois Pocket which marked the end of the Battle of Normandy and the beginning to the rout of the German army, is remembered as among of the most bloody of the war. The Second World war marked a turning point with 30million combatants and 35 million civilians killed: for the first time in the history of modern warfare the civilian dead were more than those of the military. The acknowledgement of the military sacrifice and the need for rapid post war reconstruction, meant the fate of the civilian population was largely forgotten. But now, to remember and pay homage to these millions of civilians, the local government organisations of Falaise and its surrounding countryside, have joined forces to create a memorial to civilian life in the war. Set in the heart of Falaise, next to William the Conqueror’s castle, in one of the major buildings of the first stage of Falaise’s postwar reconstruction, this new museum tells the story of civilian life in the Second World War. The painstaking reconstructions, put together by the Caen Memorial, are put into context by the memories of those who lived through it all.

Built by the first Dukes of Normandy, it was enlarged after the conquest of England in 1066. The breche au Diable or Devil’s breach in English, is unique in Normandy. This deep wooded ravine with its stream and rock formations was first inhabited in the Paleolithic with finds dating from then through to the Neolithic. Many legends are associated with it, the most famous being that of St Quentin and the Devil. St Quentin decided to live here as a hermit to help the local people who were constantly struggling with the rise and fall of the river Laizon. He made a pact with the Devil. If the Devil opened a channel in the rock for the river waters and then performed a simple task, he could take St Quentin’s soul. The hermit asked the Devil to wash a fleece in the stream and make it white again. But the Saint had given him a goat skin rather than a fleece and the Devil couldn't get it as white as a lamb. So Saint Quentin saved his soul without going back on his word. Marie Joly was a famous 18th century French actress. She was extremely beautiful and had many suitors, but she settled on M Nicolas Fouquet Dulomboy from Caen who was mayor of Tassily St Quentin. When she died, aged only 37, he was so striken with grief he erected this romantic tomb. The tomb and the surrounding area are still looked after by the family in whose care he left his beloved.
