At the 1st gate continue up along the basalt cliff to the junction at LA PLAINE DU REGARD DIRECTION: BERZEME Then cross the pastures towards Berzème, crossing the junction at BRASSE NEGRE DIRECTION: BERZEME Follow a little road beside the fields up to the crossroads at FAUGERES DIRECTION: ST PONS You will then enter a typical Coiron pasture in which you will stay well over to the left following the markings. Then take a path that goes quite steeply down to La Roche Chérie. From this point, go back down the road to LA PEYRE DIRECTION: ST PONS From there, climb up through the middle of a field, where you will then continue along beside the fence and then turn right onto a path that will take you back to the village. Variant: at La Peyre, climb up to the left on a path on basalt flow deposits. Once on the plateau, turn right along the fences to cross the Plaine du Regard, with a magnificent view point! You will then come back to the Plaine du Regard pillar, which indicates the descent back to St Pons.

This greenway is exclusively reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and rollerbladers.... Signposts are installed all along the walk. It crosses the town from east to west, from the rond-point de l'Europe to the Espace de loisirs Saint-Paul 2003, passing through the gardens and strong heritage features of our town: Jardin Saint-Vincent, Orchard des Enfants de Barbière, Jardins du Resseguin. For your safety and enjoyment, the promenade is lit at night.

On the southern slope of the plateau, locals benefit fully from the ideal situation of the village. The Romans knew it at the time and evidence of their presence here was found through excavations. Located along the river Rhone, the defile of Donzère separates the plain of Montélimar and the plain of Tricastin with majestic limestone cliffs blazing at sunset. No longer as powerful and wild as it was before the gigantic engineering work of men, the river has now settled. The village itself, former stronghold of the prince-bishops of Viviers, offers to adventurers who dare to leave the main road and the highway, a range of beautiful scenery along the village’s narrow streets and shaded squares. Stop off at the "Amis du Vieux Donzère" museum, housed in a remarkable house with a Renaissance facade, to admire collections recounting the town's history from its earliest days.

Alba is bursting with 2000 years of history…What makes Alba so unique? La Roche's hamlet built around a basalt peak and the village established around the castle, also built on a volcanic peak. Located on the edge of the massif of Coiron, surrounded by vineyard, Alba-la-Romaine is proud of its rich historical past. This 2000 years old city has an impressive feudal castle, built on a volcanic dike, fenced by many houses that make it “character village”. Alba, former capital of the Helviens, a Gallic tribe, was, at the beginning of the 1st century AD., an active Gallo-Roman city before becoming the first bishopric’s headquarters of the Vivarais at the end of the 4th century. Today, we can discover the medieval village, clustered inside its 15th century ramparts. The entire village is clad in white (limestone) and black (basalt).The facades are chequered because of the basalt and limestone, local materials used to build stunning houses, given to Alba its particular atmosphere. The castle: at an undetermined period, the Bishops of Viviers have built a square dungeon on a basaltic dike around which the population formed the first castrum (fortified city). From the middle Ages until 1904, Alba bore the name of Aps, the family name of the lordship. During the French Revolution, the castle was ransacked and sold in 1793 as a national property. In 1880, a native started the castle’s restoration. Starting from 1914, several owners succeeded one another until 1975. The restoration began with the help of the Historic Monuments administration. Listed in the supplemental inventory of the Historic Monuments, the current castle, laid out on the foundations of the medieval castles, still has its substructure.

Perched high above the Rhône valley on its volcanic neck, Rochemaure castle has still not yielded all its secrets. It was probably built by the Adhémar family from Montélimar between the 11th and 12th centuries. The old village is well worth a visit and offers marvellous views over the river. Overlooking the Rhône valley from its impressive dungeon, Rochemaure castle is still as fascinating today as ever for everyone. This castle was built by the Adhémar family from Monteil between the 11th and the 12th century. Its remains have still not given up all its mysteries. The fortified castrum from the 12th century, including ramparts and flanking towers that we can still see and the old village are medieval. We can see chequered black basalt and white limestone’s stones, which are found in lots of villages in our territory. Geologically, Rochemaure castle was built in a strategic location. Coiron plateau’s basalt and Cruas limestone quarry were used to supply the construction of the castle and the lovely old village. We can admire spectacular views of the Rhône and volcanic landscapes.

Rochemaure offers an amazing castle with ramparts going down into the valley, Notre-Dame-des-Anges’ beautiful chapel, a medieval village and the old bridge above Rhône restored as a Himalayan footbridge. The village of Rochemaure is an exceptional classified and registered heritage. The buildings are black and white because of basalt and limestone combinations which give it an elegant look. The medieval castle from the 12th century, the ramparts from the 13th century, Jovyac’s castle from the 16th century and Olivier de Serres’ hydraulic system are classified monuments. The old bridge, Notre-Dames-des Anges’ chapel, the old village are in the inventory of registered heritage. But Rochemaure is also well-known for: - ViaRhôna: the cycling road from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea alongside the Rhône, which is 100 meters from the village. Along the way, you will discover the local fauna and flora. Arriving at the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view that seems straight out of a dream. The Croix de Juliau no longer sits enthroned, but the 360° panorama will still be there: your gaze will go from Villeneuve de Berg to the Dent de Rez, passing through authentic villages like Mirabel, St Jean le Centenier, St Pons, Alba la Romaine, and Valvignères, but also by Mont Ventoux, Coiron and Vercors. Don't forget your camera to capture these wide open spaces! Some legends attribute the name of Mount Juliau to Julius Caesar (who passed through there), but other sources contradict this theory. However, the Roman presence has been attested since the discovery of a villa, and a temple dedicated to the soothsayer Julius Caesar and Augustus (or Diana depending on the sources).

You will take advantage of a charming small garden, a pleasant exotic swimming pool and a very welcoming inside, with a Provençal kitchen, an immense living room in three parts (on the superior levels) and cosy rooms with contemporary bathrooms. This surprising holiday rental is the former dependence of the episcopal palace and the bishop's palace dominating the place of the Cathedral Saint-Jean.

The building is an early 20th-century convent for nuns, perched in the upper town of Viviers, behind the Cathedral...
