Once upon a time in Marmande, Ferline was the daughter of a rich bourgeois, young, beautiful and wise. Peyrot Bory, of modest extraction, was dying of love for her, but did not dare to admit it to her. After a visit to the West Indies and New Grenada, he brought back in his luggage a pouch in which were some strange flat seeds, dark grey. Back in Marmande, he sowed the famous seeds in a sunny corner of his father's garden. At the beginning of the summer, clusters of magnificent red fruits appeared, round and smooth. Every morning, he picked a few of them and put them in a small wicker basket that he left on the windowsill of the beautiful house...

The first part of this route crosses the river Trec before crossing a large natural area that separates the city from the Garonne. A passage on the shaded mats adds a little freshness...

To the delight of cycling enthusiasts, a new route reserved exclusively for pedestrians, cyclists and non-motorized modes of transport (excluding horse riders) opened in 2023 in the département. Accessible by train from Marmande SNCF station, La So Vélo links Marmande with the spa town of Casteljaloux (and Clarens lake) and Pindères in the Landes region, over a distance of 27 km. Built on a former railroad line, the So Vélo allows you to ride safely between the Landes and Garonne rivers, passing through the towns of Marmande, Gaujac, Montpouillan, Samazan, Bouglon, Argenton, Poussignac, Casteljaloux and Pindères. It is also linked to the Canal des 2 Mers bike path (at the canal bridge in Montpouillan and near the Pont des Sables boat stop).

The first part of this route runs along the river Trec to reach the Filhole, a nature area in the town of Marmande. It then follows the banks of the Garonne and the dyke that surrounds the Lac des Prairies.

The vineyards of the Côtes du Marmandais are quite present on this itinerary, which offers many shaded passages in sunken paths or in small wooded areas.

This hike runs through the plain between the village of Gaujac, the canal towpath and its Voie Verte and the river flood protection dikes. A small detour by the mill of Cantecort is necessary: Built at the end of the 15th century or at the beginning of the 16th century it is located on the Avance before the confluence with the Garonne. Wheat was transported there by boats, by the Garonne and then transported to the mill by a railway. At the beginning of the 20th century, flour production stopped, so the Cantecort mill was used to make ice cream and then wooden toys. Today it is a popular attraction for hikers.

The canal crosses the Lot-et-Garonne, over 87 km, in the shade of hundred-year-old plane trees. Never troubled by the risk of flooding or drought, it winds its way through the wine-growing hills of the Marmandais and Buzet regions, through orchards and sunflower fields. In Agen, it crosses the Garonne on the famous canal bridge, 540 metres long and with 23 arches. There are many stops and river bases. Thanks to the Voie Verte which runs alongside it, it is a great opportunity to combine the pleasures of navigation with those of discovery by bike. Boaters, cyclists and walkers can all enjoy the river in a friendly atmosphere!

The traces of Sainte-Bazeille go back to the Neolithic period. The numerous excavations and discoveries, exhibited in the village museum, make it a key archaeological site in the middle Garonne. This small loop starts from the place de la Calle near the church of Couthures-sur-Garonne, then it follows the big loop of the Garonne, river personified by the inhabitants of the village who live at the rhythm of its floods. It has undergone several floods, the four largest (1875, 1930, 1952, 1981) are inscribed on the wall of the church.
