No roads, no villages. The scarcity of surface water has prevented a permanent human presence. The main activities that you are likely to meet in the Reserve area are grazing, forestry and walking. Other activities such as scientific research, hunting, etc also take place. A variant to Grand Tour du Vercors, the Hauts-Plateaux crossing is a 55 kilometre trail at the heart of the Natural Reserve. Created in 1985, the Reserve nestles at the heart of the Vercors Park. With its 17,000 hectares, it is the largest Natural Land Reserve in mainland France.Whilst the Reserve retains a wild aspect, it requires daily management by the Vercors Park, in collaboration with local institutions (NFO, towns) and the professional users of the land. Work is regularly carried out to preserve the fauna, flora, building heritage; to facilitate the work of the breeders and farmers, tap water sources... The monument of the 45th Parallel is located a few meters away, in front of a place of memory dedicated to the resistance during World War II. You can also follow Le Puits which will take you to the Puits des Ravières, a rare permanent water point here resulting from the convergence of the run-off in the center of a clay basin (attention, it is unfortunately impossible To obtain water).The return trip is made by the GR 91 following the direction of Corrençon-en-Vercors by Camp II, Les Ravières, Rocher de l'Echalet, Les Feuillus, Cross of the Mass, Le Clariant, then Le Champ de la Bataille , Les Charmeyennes, the Cross of Jacques and Le Golf. From there, join the village by Les Murgers, Les Picauds, then Les Martins.

This short circuit for the whole family gives you the opportunity to discover some geological curiosities of the Vercors. Indeed, between the Glacière de Corrençon and the Barre aux Chèvres, you will be amazedby the chasms and fracturescreated by water in the limestone.

Climbing the Tête des Chaudières through the Pas de la Balme is an altitude hike appreciated in summer as well as in winter thanks to ski touring. This medium difficult route requires a little training and a good camera to capture the scenery.

Les Gorges du Furon, framed by steep limestone cliffs, have been shaped by the torrent which today flows at the bottom of the gorges.

Run around Lake Monteynard-Avignonet, cross Himalayan footbridges, challenge yourself in the magnificent landscapes between Trièves and Matheysine! In early July, trail courses for all levels of ability. Every year, at the beginning of July, trails for all levels of ability are offered, attracting an ever-increasing number of runners dazzled by the panoramic views over the Trièves and La Matheysine. The Trail de Côte Rouge (26 km) is an opportunity for regular Trail runners to discover the joys of Trail running, or for those who have run Trail découverte events and want to progress to the next level. Departure and arrival on the shores of Lake Monteynard, at the Treffort water sports center. After skirting the lake, you'll cross the Ebron footbridge, then the Pont de Brion, a listed structure. From here, the first ramp takes you up to the hamlet of Maissenas, where you can enjoy superb views of the lake and Sénépi, on the opposite shore, from the slopes of Côte Rouge. Then it's on to the second ramp to reach the Côte Rouge orientation table! From here, you'll descend to the village of Monestier-de-Clermont, where you'll be greeted by the village en fête! The name would come from a Burgundian word. It is true that from Bourgogne to the Ardèche, the stones grow well in limestone fields! These piles of pebbles at the edge of the field are the result of the stoning patient, over time, realized by generations of obstinate peasants to gain arable land. Sometimes, they are mounted in low walls to delimit enclosures and plots.It is also a beautiful refuge for rampant wildlife in search of shelter.

"Clariant" a name singing "LE CLAIR", an air coming from the old forest which gave itself, impotent, to the ardor of the charcoal-burners of old. The Clariant was also a place of limestone stone sizes, used to mark the boundaries with the neighboring forests. Today a hostel welcomes you (check opening hours and days).

Along the route, you can admire the lapiaz, which result from the run-off of water on the surface of limestone slabs. The limestone being soluble in the water of the gutters are formed and draw miniature canyons, the water then infiltrates in the cracks to join the underground network.

Natural curiosity

The 45th parallel of north latitude is halfway between Ecuador and the North Pole, which are each 5,000 kilometers away. At the same latitude, there is the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve in Europe, and in Yellowstone National Park, created in 1872 and the first national park in the world.

The ruins of the Herbouilly farm are the vestige of history. In June 1944, the farm served as a command post for Jean Prevost (Captain Goderville). On 23 July 1944, the Germans attacked Valchevrière. Jean Prévost is his men must retreat and the farm is destroyed by the Germans.

The Fauge Shelter is a large, unguarded hut. With a fireplace, it can accommodate 20 people. It is named after the valley of the Fauge.

The carette hut is an old sheepfold restored by the Parc du Vercors and transformed into an unguarded refuge. This beautiful hut indicates the entrance to the Natural Reserve of Hauts-Plateaux du Vercors.

The shelter of Peyrouse (Abri de la Peyrouse) located on the balconies East of the Vercors is an unguarded stone hut, 2 places are planned to sleep there, but you will not find there water nor stove to warm you.

The Baraque of Veymont is an unguarded cabin of the Forest Service. It can accommodate 8 people for the night, but plan your equipment because it does not have mattresses or stove.

The cabin of the Aiguillettes is a former shepherd's hut dating back to the time when the pastoral units were smaller. This hut, open to the public, accommodates only 4 people by tightening a little and does not have a stove.
