Created over twenty years ago for mountain bike enthusiasts, the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT is a mythical route, a collector's item like few others in France. Today, the GTMC-VTT is back in the spotlight, bigger, more accessible, more modern. It's now a complete crossing of the Massif Central, from the great Morvan lakes in Burgundy to the Mediterranean. 1360 km to cover three regions, ten départements, four regional nature parks and one national park, and discover the exceptional succession of the Massif's great landscapes, as well as the people and heritage of these highlands. The GTMC is also becoming more welcoming. Camping du Coq, ideally located on the D975 between Bourg-en-Bresse and Tournus, welcomes travelers for a night or vacationers for a longer stay, in a verdant, peaceful setting on the banks of a river. Our farm is open to share our passion for breeding: Charolais cows, wagyus (the best meat in the world) and Selle Français sport horses. We are committed to respect for animals, the environment and transparency. Wagyu, the legendary Japanese beef. "Waygyu" means "Japanese beef". This breed is at the origin of several exceptional meat-producing regions (Kobe beef, Hida beef, Ishigaki beef, etc.) throughout the Japanese archipelago. It was at the end of the 19th century, after more than a hundred years of prohibition, that the Japanese population began to consume the meat of oxen previously used for agricultural work. The breed was selected for the marbling of its meat, but also for its docility. Respect for animals and their environment is an integral part of Japanese Buddhist culture. One of the best beef cuts in the world! The marbling (intramuscular fat) gives the meat its taste: its importance is a characteristic of hardy breeds that is lost with selection to increase muscle mass. It explains the unrivalled flavor of Wagyu beef and its exceptional smoothness. Wagyu beef is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, notably Omega 3. These essential fatty acids are beneficial to health and help prevent certain diseases. Wagyu cattle are particularly well cared for, avoiding any stress. They are fattened throughout their development, reaching maturity at 3 years. Charolais, an excellent traditional meat! We also raise a herd of Charolais cattle, carefully selected to produce quality meat. For direct sale, we reserve young cows aged 4-6 years who have had one to three calves: this is what gives the tastiest, most tender meat. They are fattened with the same high-quality feed as Wagyu cattle, and the fattening period (from 4 to 12 months) ensures that the meat is very marbled for the breed, and therefore very tasty. Breeding in the Ain region. Our methods are based on the renowned tradition of Bresse breeding, and combine the very best in terms of genetics, feed, habitat and rearing methods, with respect for the animal (and the employees). The farm provides the cows' feed: natural meadows, artificial meadows (Swiss Mix) and cereals form the basis. The cows and their calves are raised freely in the meadows during the good season (March to November). We integrate respect for the environment into our breeding approach: hedges are planted, manure is treated by methanization and the energy thus supplied is used to dry fodder in the barn. We optimize crop production by alternating grazing with cattle and horses (thus also reducing parasite pressure). Finally, in keeping with Japanese culture, we take particular care to maintain the docility of our animals through respectful and attentive domestication.

The ramparts were built in 1399, forming a perfect circle around the village. A few watchtowers and brick walls (privately owned) bear witness to this medieval past. It's possible to take a walk around the ramparts.

Frédéric Martin has been welcoming diners to the former capital of Bresse since 1994, with updated traditional menus and a local influence: pomme Anna frogs, sautéed like in Dombes, with garlic butter cream. Having worked in the kitchens of Georges Blanc, the Palais de l'Elysée and Le Gavroche in London, the chef now welcomes you with his traditional menus, updated to reflect local influences, including their specialties, pomme Anna de grenouilles, sautéed as in Dombes with garlic butter cream. Cyril Degluaire's Bresse poultry with morel cream and vin jaune, crêpes parmentières and a more modern cuisine, the palette du berger in three variations, filet de boeuf au cœur de foie gras, le confidentiel pour foiegrasphile, chaud froid d'agrumes are there to intoxicate your taste buds, all served with, essentially, proprietary wines. Since 1999, La Table Bâgésienne has been awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide, making it one of the oldest Bib Gourmand restaurants in France! We can also cater for special events (weddings, cocktails, takeaways). Cooking courses (will be posted on the site).

By the 40th day after mobilisation the German High Command expected to have brought the French and British armies to a decisive battle and destroyed them. This conclusion to Schlieffen’s famous Plan relied on the Russians taking at least this length of time to mobilise via their poor railway system. The BEF played a small but significant part in the battle of the Marne even though Field Marshall French had seriously contemplated removing his men from the action to reform and rest. However, this major battle was largely won through the determination and courage of the French soldiers and their leaders. The French snatched a conclusive victory from what looked like an imminent defeat. The German High Command failed in its attempt to capture Paris and force the French government to capitulate. The ‘race to the sea’ now followed, in which the Allies and Central Powers atempted to outflank each other. The line of trenches was then settled from the North Sea to Switzerland. The Allies and the Central Powers now knew that the war would continue far longer than they had thought. The next few years would be spent in learning how to fight a new kind of war with new weapons in the air and on the ground. The price of this process would be paid in blood.

The "Dunes des Charmes" sand dunes offer an astonishing landscape far from the sea, shaped by floods and wind. Open spaces rub shoulders with wooded areas and some wetlands. The Dunes des Charmes site was awarded the "ENS" label by the Département de l'Ain in 2014. True natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, sites with the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed to preserve the biodiversity they host, and developed to be open to the public (with some exceptions due to the fragility of the environments). The site's very dry areas are punctuated by ponds and the banks of the Seille river, which add a touch of freshness and originality to the site. The site is open to the public. A parking lot has been set up in the commune of Sermoyer. Information panels on the site's history and challenges have been installed near the parking area. A pedestrian loop allows you to visit this atypical site and discover its treasures, thanks to signposting on a 2km trail (approx. 1h-1h30). Notable species observed: Flora: reindeer lichen, false heather, corynephorus (or sand hedgehog), mosses... Fauna: anteater, tiger beetle, broom azure, green lizard, hoopoe... 3 picnic tables and attractive play area

Labeled a Sensitive Natural Area since 2015, Ile de la Motte is located on the Saône River off Saint-Bénigne. It is home to colonies of herons: black-crowned night heron, grey heron and cattle egret. The Île de la Motte was awarded the "ENS" label by the Département de l'Ain in 2015. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, the sites benefiting from the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed in such a way as to preserve the biodiversity they host and developed for opening to the public (barring exceptions due to the fragility of the environments). Located on the Saône River off Saint-Bénigne, Ile de la Motte is home to colonies of herons: black-crowned night heron, grey heron, heron and little egret, sometimes sensitive to disturbance during the breeding season. Information signs indicate that the island's frequentation disturbs the breeding of these remarkable birds from March to July. The existence of the island in the river is also an asset for maintaining fish diversity. Visits and educational events are organized to discover the natural riches of the site. You can consult the dates of these events on the Nature events calendar "sCENe ouverte sur le patrimoine naturel de l'Ain". Nearby, don't miss a visit to the Maison de l'Eau in Pont-de-Vaux. From the banks, you can observe the spring nesting season.

On the left bank of the Saône, it forms an original landscape that is home to endangered avifauna (corncrake, curlew, black-tailed godwit) and wetland flora (guinea fowl).

The Montalibord farmhouse features a Saracen-style mantel with a square, pyramidal bolster of an uncommonly abraded form. It is surmounted by a wrought-iron cross and its sides are decorated with triangular imbrications. Dendrochronological analyses show that the house was built in 1450, 1517-1518 and underwent several alterations in 1780. The chimney and roof were listed in 1944, and the whole farmhouse in 1974. Beautifully flowered in fine weather, it is still in business today (Charolais cattle, pond fishing and tourist accommodation = gîte and chambres d'hôtes). Inhabited until the mid-70s, it still has an open-air fireplace and period furniture (19th c. or even earlier), in particular an imposing archebanc (ancestral bench) with storage and a table. Also on display are a salt chair, a four-poster bed, tables and benches for meals, a tourti (bread ladder), a sink stone, a chest... In the old rooms, a presentation of the farm from 1932 to the present day, with a few tools and photos showing the evolution of farming techniques, but also the philosophy that has always prevailed on this farm over the three generations that have succeeded one another: the quest for quality. The eco-museum can be visited daily. Guided tours available on request.

Grandval farmhouse, named after an ancient parish, has been brought back to life by Morgan Benoît, the new owner since 2021. The great room, with its fireplace and period furniture, is open to visitors by special arrangement during the Heritage Days. The Grandval farmhouse dates back to the very early 16th century. The oak used to support the Saracen fireplace was felled in 1503. The Saracen fireplace was listed as a historic monument in 1925, and the body of the house in 1981. In 2021, the farm was bought by Benoît Morgan, a heritage enthusiast from Mézériat, where his grandparents and great-grandparents were millers. The farm is open for Heritage Days in September. In 2023, more than 400 people visited it. PLEASE NOTE: Exceptionally open on request and for the European Heritage Days.

A tour reveals you secrets of the mediaeval city... Another special feature: the well is equipped with a double crank handle, a reminder that the farm was once divided between two sisters whose relationship was far from cordial! Camping du Coq, ideally located on the D975 between Bourg-en-Bresse and Tournus, welcomes travelers for a night or vacationers for a longer stay, in a verdant, peaceful setting on the banks of a river. Charming little campsite on the banks of a river (fishing possible) and the greenway. Pleasantly restorative and beautifully flowered estate in a shady green setting. Municipal campsite in partnership with CAMPING CAR PARK. The campsite doesn't offer any entertainment, but the calm and soothing setting encourages you to relax, discover the surrounding tourist sites and go for a bike ride. The VOIE VERTE runs alongside the campsite, providing easy access to other villages, and the ROUTE des 3 MOULINS (starting at the campsite) runs for 25km through the Bresse bocage; 30 fully serviced pitches (sanitary facilities, electricity, water, drainage, wifi...).
