Explore Morizecourt in Vosges, Lorraine's hidden charms

With this trail, you will discover one of the most important places in the history of Lorraine : Châtenois. In the 11th century, the first Duke of Lorraine, Gerard of Alsace, had a fortified castle perched on the upper part of the town. His wife, Hedwige of Namur, founded a Benedictine priory in 1069, which still dominates the landscape. There are many calvaries along the path, which explains the surname of "Petite Bretagne Lorraine" (Little Brittany in Lorraine) given to this territory. Marking : blue ring

This walk, along the Mouzon, will allow you to discover the limestone plateau and the richness of the flora and fauna. It is a protected natural site of European interest, which is called dry calcaerous grassland of the east coast. Among the dry grasslands of the Western Vosges, this is one of those with the most obvious southern aspect. Overlooking the Mouzon the Anger valley, you will discover there the limestone formation of the Natura 2000 network.

The route is marked with a red disc in both directions. At the start, follow the markings common to all the routes: red triangle, then after crossing the town, follow the red disc. After a gradual slope on the road and then through the fields (lookout point for observing the fauna) to the Bourguignotte recreation area (shelter, drinking water and children's playground), this hike continues into the undergrowth on a footpath. After the hamlet of Raval, discovery of the Fontaine aux chèvres in a beautiful beech forest, then crossing the hamlet of Fontenelles, the way back goes through the beautiful forest paths to the Fouillies wood.

With the spa town of the Vosges in your rear view, you continue your picturesque cycling adventure between the Vosges canal and the Coney valley. This stage of the Voie Bleue passes through the Vosges forest, populated by spruce, beech and maple trees. Once in the Haute-Saône, the green ribbon of the canal will allow you to discover the atypical manual swing bridge at Selles, which allows the waterway to be cleared for boats. The route is easy to follow along the towpath of the Canal des Vosges. This trail helps you discover the thermal history of the Western Vosges. The village of Dolaincourt has a small sulphurous, sodic and arsenic thermal spring, which has been exploited since the middle of the 19th century, in a small yellown wooden building. This small cabin was used as a refreshment room and as a bottling plant until 1914. The village of Vouxey has a beautiful church dating from the 16th century.

This trail is perfect for nature lovers. From the "Maison Forestière du Rendez-Vous" (forest house), you will be able to admire remarkable trees along the path. Amongst others, you will see the Lothar oak, the Douglas-firs and the famous giant sequoia, made remarkable by its height. A stop will be made at the Malovoye fountain, whose name comes from "mal" (wrong) and "avoi", which means "wrong path". During the spring, this spring allows amphibians to come breed.

This trail is accessible to all and shaded, ideal for hot weather. The trail starts at the thermal baths of Bains-les-Bains. On the way out, you pass through the charming spa park of the resort. From this point on, follow the two-way marking with a green ring. By taking the avenue du Docteur Bailly, then the route de la gare you will gradually leave the town and you will find yourself in the nature. This route follows a charming stream. At the roundabout, take the path along the D164. It will be accessible on your right. Don't forget to take a moment to observe the surrounding nature with its diverse flora and fauna. Then your steps will lead you to the forest hill of Rédé. Finally the path will take you across the D164 and back in the opposite direction. You will retrace your steps via the rue de Bertramont and return to the town and the starting point.

This little museum contains a number of rare collections. It tells the history of Vittel, from its days as a rural village to its development thanks to the trend for “taking the waters” that began in 1854. Numerous items and photos show the changes in a village previously typical of Lorraine, as it becomes a small town with some remarkable buildings. The museum also illustrates changes in spa-based health care, the bottling of the mineral water and advertising through the years, with a dozen highly-representative tableaux.

In the “Museum of glass, iron, wood and the Resistance”, there are countless glass objects, tools, models and photographs illustrating the expertise of the people of the forest over the last five centuries. One room focusses on the French Resistance (1943-44); another highlights the famous glassmaker François-Théodore Legras. In summer 2010, there will be a temporary exhibition entitled, “The Gallo-Romans in Saône Lorraine”.

Sartes is a village located in a peaceful valley, by the Mouzon river and on the Roman road from Lyon to Trier. You can visit its church dedicated to St Evence. It dates from the 19th century and contains a stone Pietà from the 17th century.

The small village of Jainvillotte, at the south of Neufchâteau, has a church worthy of interest. Dedicated to Saint Michael, the church was built in the 12th century with additions from the 13th century.

The St Martin’s Church in Pompierre was rebuilt in the 19th century, but the Romanesque portal dating from the first building in the 12th century has been preserved. It is the finest example of Romanesque sculpture in Lorraine. In a good state of preservation, it bears witness to the influence of Burgundian sculpture in the region at that time. The tympanum has the Adoration of the Magi in the centre and the Massacre of the Innocents in the upper part. The lintel depicts the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

The Romanesque priory church (depicted on one of the stained glass) was demolished to make room for the current Saint Peter’s Church of Grillot type (1843). It was renovated inside and out in 1993. It follows a very old Romanesque church dating from the foundation of the Priory (1069). The attention can be focused on the following points: Statues of Saint Anthony, of the education of the Virgin Mary, of Saint John the Baptist dating from the 16th century. The big rosaries could represent a confraternity of the Rosary founded in 1535 in La Neuveville-sous-Châtenois. Fragment of a retable on which the figures were to be painted.

At the top of a hill, the Priory remains the last witness of the glorious past of Châtenois. Wife of Gérard of Alsace, Count of Châtenois and first Duke of Lorraine, Hadwide de Namur founded a Benedictine Priory dedicated to Saint Peter and dependent on the Abbey of Toul around 1069. Several times destroyed and rebuilt, this imposing building formed a main building with two wings that joined the church. Today only one wing remains. Adjacent to the church and dating from the last reconstruction after a fire in the 18th century, this part was still used as a presbytery until recently. Now, throughout the year, the Priory offers various events, permanent and temporary exhibitions. In addition, a walk in the Haut Bourg district of Châtenois will allow you to discover an incredible view of the surrounding countryside.
