Discover the charms of Gilley, Doubs, Franche-Comté

Roaming along the roads of the historical centre, this city tour will take you on a discovery of Pontarlier’s emblematic locations: architectural, historical and symbolic city buildings, the banks of the Doubs and a viewpoint over the city. From the Tourist Office (), descend rue de la Gare to rue de la République.Head to Place d’Arçon, on your left. From here, you can see the Saint-Pierre gate at the end of the road.From the square, take rue de la Halle near the theatre. At the end of the road, head to the old barracks via place des Bernardines and place Cretin, on your right. Go to the bridge across the Doubs by heading through place Jules Pagnier and rue de Morteau.From here, make a round trop (1.2 km) to the Armand Guy distillery via rue des Lavaux.On returning to rue de Morteau, enter the park on the edge of the Doubs and follow the embankments on a little adapted path; this will take you to the other side of the park. Join up with rue de la République by leaving the park through rue Julez Mathez, where you will find the Jeanne d’Arc high school.   On arriving at rue de la République, head left until you reach another bridge over the Doubs. From here, make a round trip to the Hospital to observe its facade and the two chapels that can be seen from the road.On returning to rue de la République, after crossing the bridge once more, head down rue Montrieux and take rue Gambetta on your right to reach place Saint-Bénigne and the church. From the square, head to the train station vie rue Tissot. From here, you can head directly to the Tourist Office via rue de la Gare. You can also make a round trip of under 2 km to the Chapelle de l’Espérance, with a stunning viewpoint over the whole city. It can be accessed by heading down rocade George Pompidou until you come to rue du Stand, then head under the railway and take rue de la Chapelle (yellow waymarking) directly to the viewpoint.

From the Mont-d’Or and its cliffs, a panoramic view will give you the breath of fresh air you may have been lacking during the ascent through the Morond and the ridges. This view is followed by a beautiful descent through the alpine pastures and forests that will please fans of short trails. From the Métabief Tourist Office () take the tarmac road that heads up towards MOROND.Follow this road (red MTB waymarking no. 77) heading through the crossroads at La Cheneau, La Fontaine aux Oiseaux, Tournant des Canons, Monrond and Sous le Monrond until you reach Sous la Citerne. From here, you can reach the summit of the MOROND to make the most of your first beautiful viewpoint. Take the “chemin des crêtes” until you come to the Mont d’Or parking lot. The Mont d’Or summit can be accessed by foot from here within 10 minutes.From the parking lot, follow the road to the Pâturages de la Grangette (La Grangette pastures).Branch off to your right on a narrow grassy trail that heads down through the pastures and wooded meadows. At La Barthelette, continue on the trail to your left which opens onto a little road. Take the road to your left, then turn right and continue on until you reach the alpine pasture farm of la Bartelette. Turn left and follow a grassy trail through the pastures, gradually ascending into the forest, and exit onto LA BOISSAUDE (). Head past the old farm and descend to your right on an open trail to join up with a tarmac road, you will soon come to LES GRANGES RAGUIN. Turn right after the building and take the muddy and stony path that runs along a meadow and then descends into the forest. Take the tarmac road and follow it for 700 m. Turn right onto a small trail to reach Les Toises. Continue to your right and reach the road in Les Meix. Turn right again and head through a small wooded area to reach Les Chapusets. Head approximately 700 m down the road to your left, before turning right and coming to Les Crétets and La Roche.Follow the road to your right until you reach the heart of LES LONGEVILLES (). Just before the church, turn right, head past the town hall and take the white path to your left until you reach Les Perrières and head on to the METABIEF TOURIST OFFICE.

A quick peddle around the National Natural Reserve of the Remoray lake and the Saint Point lake, a circuit with diverse relief and marked by a belvedere that opens onto both lakes in the green valley of the High Doubs. From the centre of REMORAY, ) take the “route des Grandes Plaines” to your right (red MTB waymarking no. 12), which gradually ascends to a forest massif towards La Côte. Take a small muddy trail to the left, and join up with a forest path, continuing again to the left for around 900 m. In the wide bend to the right, turn left (MTB crossing) and exit onto a pasture. Follow the path to your left and then the white path that leads to Sur la Côte. Head up the earthy path to the right, through the pastures, towards la Grande Combe. Branch off to the left on a white path that heads into the forest and, after around 600 metres, turn right onto a grassy trail. From here, follow a succession of small muddy, grassy or stony trails that soon meet up with a forest road. Head down the road to your left, head past the Les Trois Portes chalet and branch off to the right to follow a path along the forest for around 1 km.Branch off to the left again and follow the forest path that meets up with a forest road after 450 m. Follow this road to the left for 150 m and take the path to the right.Joining up with a wide forest path just before descending to the village of Boujeons, do not miss the trail that turns left straight away (MTB path) and crosses through the pastures until coming to the village of Boujeons. Take the main village road by turning left, then turn right down towards the village sawmill. Cross a small bridge and leave the village, taking the tarmac road that ascends to your left and turns into a white path through the pastures until you reach La Plaine à Chaillet. Cross the pasture by turning left, then take the forest trail that opens onto a white path. Shortly after, turn left (MTB path) and cross the pastures using a small grassy trail until you come to Les Brétilles, just above Le Brey. Take the road to the left, without heading all the way down to the main road, and then follow a stony path that ascends into the forest through a clearing. Branch off to the right on a forest track that heads up to the BELVEDERE OF THE TWO LAKES (BELVEDERE DES DEUX LACS). Head down a small muddy trail to a road, then turn right to reach theRF Marcel Goux Parking lot. Head left to the Buclet intersection on the road towards Remoray. Follow the road to your left for 100 m and take the parallel forest path that once again comes out onto this road. Head up to REMORAY after crossing the bridge over the Drésine, a small river that feeds the Remoray lake.

A diverse circuit focused around the subject of water with, at its highest point, a belvedere over the Remoray and Saint-Point lakes. Starting in the BREY town hall parking lot, the trail (yellow and blue waymarking) heads down the village via the road just below the main road, before leaving the hamlet by passing alongside the D 437. The path - which is suitable for vehicles - heads towards le Fuverat and passes through the artisanal zone, before leading to a new fork. The trail continues on a forest road that descends to the left. After crossing the « Lhaut » stream, the itinerary meets up with a road, in this open forest, that you will follow to the left. Walk past the Capucins source to reach the Lhaut bridge. The trail then heads back uphill for around 10 meters along the D437 (Take care when crossing the road!). At the junction with a forest road, climb the embankment and take the trail that gradually ascends through the forest, to access "route de Remoray", in Buclet.  To the left the circuit joins the RF Marcel Goux parking lot to access the forest road and follows this road 100m uphill before taking a steep trail opening on to the TWO LAKES BELVEDERE. With your back to the belvedere, a trail runs through the forest, crosses a pasture, before coming to a road just under the Brey hamlet. This trail then ascends to the right towards les Bretilles. Return to your starting point by heading down the farm road with low walls and ash trees to your left (take care when crossing the D437).

A route to the Mont d'or summit and its panoramic views that will take your breath away, through pastures punctuated by many mountain chalets and Haut-Doubs farms. From LES GRANGES RAGUIN (white and red waymarking), the trail follows the road towards the Mont d’Or over a short distance, before branching off to the left through a small clearing to take a forest path. A trail marked out in the pasture will bring you to LA BOISSAUDE. Still ascending in the same direction, through an open area scattered with mountain chalets, the trail cuts across "route de la Coquille" before joining the Mont d’Or access road and the Pastures of la Grangette. After crossing the Mont d’Or parking lot, the trail (yellow and blue waymarking) opens out onto the MONT D’OR CLIFFS, with a first summit at 1,461 m, before following the ridge southwards to the Mont d’Or at 1,463 m. Following along the panoramic ridge, the trail meets the Franco-Swiss border near the Mont d’Or cabin and runs along the right of the border wall to pass by the Gym cabin. At marker 72, the circuit branches off to the right into the combe (grassy path in the pasture), and joins up with the road to the Grande Échelle chalet. The road descends towards la Petite Échelle (gîte stopover and discovery farm), and then ascends to the right along the edge of the forest. The trail takes a forest path to the left, before crossing the combe. It meanders through a forest section and opens onto "route du Haut Soulier". After 500 m on a gravel path, the circuit branches off to the right on a stone path through a wooded area and meets up with "Chemin de Corneau" and (white and red waymarking) the parking lot where you started in LES GRANGES RAGUIN.

An MTB trail without difficulty and easy to cycle, to the sounds of the bell-wearing livestock, departing from Sarrageois, a village near Mouthe in the High-Doubs. From SARRAGEOIS, take chemin de Capiche (Green MTB waymark no. 99), a small road that ascends through pastures to the crossroads in La Capiche. Continue on this road, and enter the wood of la Pila, until you come to the Combe of Ashes. Branch off to the right on the road through the middle of pastures, towards Gros Buisson, and then Les Paris, before finally descending to MAISON DU BOIS. Take the road to the right just before the large village farm and follow a white path that ascends through the pastures to an MTB path. The grassy trail cuts through a pasture and continues on a trail through the undergrowth, before reaching le Lasenois.Turn left and follow the road down towards SARRAGEOIS and your starting point.

Departing from Mouthe, the village serving as the Transjurassienne arrival point (the famous cross-country ski race), this is an easy walk, complemented by many interpretive signs allowing hikers to discover the Doubs' source, its valley and its peat bogs. From the MOUTHE TOWN HALL, at the heart of the village, the itinerary heads off to the right (white and red waymarking) on the road towards the Doubs' source, goes past the church and the presbytery before coming to the Hike Starting Point. Via "rue du Moutat" to your right (yellow and blue waymarking) the trail continues on a small very flat road which, after crossing the Doubs, is bordered by damp meadows until it reaches "Route du Mouthat". Walk along the side of the road to the left for 100m. At Bas du Gît, the road to the left bordered by meadows, and later by a peat bog (boardwalk and informational sign), easily leads to the DOUBS SOURCE. The trail heads up the river, following its right embankment, before reaching its source. The adapted trail provides a 300-meter circuit to access a belvedere via a few steps before heading back down and will help you learn about the Doubs and its secrets. Once back near the bridge over the Doubs, a small well-adapted path (white and red waymarking) heads along the river towards Mouthe via "Chemin de la Source".

Nestled at the heart of a large valley flanked by the Doubs' first meanderings, Mouthe invites you on a stroll to discover its treasures and its history. From the town hall, this circuit leads you step-by-step from the village's origins to its life today, with stops at the source of the Doubs and the Moutat peat bog, two of this area's jewels. Between France and Switzerland, an easy walk through a landscape of combes. In the summer, the animals' cowbells ring out around the chalets, former stopovers where smugglers once operated. From the parking lot in the CHEZ LIADET hamlet, this walk starts (yellow and blue waymarking) slow through a road that winds through the combe, heading past the Plaine Chez Liadet and continuing until the intersection at les Bâties. The trail then branches off to the left on a wide gravel road before coming to la Bâtie-Dessus. Going past the chalet, the trail continues for 500 m before turning left and entering a forest that soon leads to a large clearing. The trail leaves the main path, taking a grassy path to the left, in the middle of a wooded meadow, towards Chez Bougaud. To the left of the house, at the trail's highest point (1155m), a gravel road heads downhill to the bottom of a combe bordered by closed pastures. In the dip, at the intersection of several paths, the circuit heads left and reaches the Chez Greset mountain chalet. In front of the chalet, to the left, after 500 m a good path will lead you to the intersection at Chez Mimi. The path continues to the left for a few meters, before heading downwards to the right on a wide path through the forest leading to Plaine Chez Liadet, and your starting point.

South of the Mouthe valley, a succession of forests and pastures, punctuated by two belvederes: a recent one at the Côte Feuillée to learn about ski jumping and its history, and the Roche Blanche in Chatelblanc. Starting at Cébriot (stream) facing the town hall, the trail heads up the village (white and red waymarking) to LERNIER, before (yellow and blue waymarking) following the D 46 and reaching l’Estanguillon. The path heads up to the right through a valley with a small stream before exiting onto Sur la Chenoz where the first house's dam is proof of the existence of a former mill. The path then turns abruptly to the right, to access the COTE FEUILLEE. The trail continues on a path that descends into a forest to the left (pay attention to the waymarking) until it reaches the Place à bois des Serments. The path to the right, which is suitable for vehicles (white and red waymarking) passes through a combe to les Serments, and then (yellow and blue waymarking) comes to Bois des Ravières. The Bridaux forebay waterfall and the vestiges of its mill can be accessed within 5 mins via LA SCIE. Be careful! The route heads upwards towards Chatelblanc and quickly reaches (100 m) La Combette de la Roche. A grassy trail crosses through a pasture (MTB path) before exiting onto the Grand Réservoir. The panoramic view from Roche Blanche is then accessible within 5 mins (there and back). Be careful! When you have returned from the viewpoint, the good farm road that pleasantly overlooks the combe to the east joins up with "Chemin de la Roche" after a sharp bend to the left. A barely-signposted trail to the right in the combe (MTB path) cuts through the meadows, joins up with a path and opens out into the heart of Chaux-Neuve, behind the old cheese dairy.

DEPARTING FROM LAUSANNE, HEAD TO THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF GRUYÈRES, HOME TO THE FAMOUS SWISS CHEESE! Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. If the weather allows, climb on board a steamboat and cross the lake to reach Chillon Castle. Make the most of a guided tour of this fortified castle, built in the 16th century and hidden by Lake Geneva!  After your visit, you will head back towards Montreux by bus. You will make a stop to enjoy some free time in the town. At the heart of the town, make the most of the unique and relaxing atmosphere in the centre of the Swiss Riviera. The little train offers you a 35 minutes tour. Thanks to the commentary on board, you will discover the main monuments and emblematic places of the city.

A programme of thematic exhibitions is presented every year : paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc. In just a few years, the Palais Lumière has become one of the main cultural and artistic centres of the lake Geneva basin. Inaugurated in August 1902, the institute of hydrotherapy is considered to be the best of its kind. Open from 15 May to 15 October, it administers 1,200 treatments a day: baths, showers, massages, and electrical and mechanical treatments. Architect Ernest Brunnarius designed an impressive building: 68 m long and 25 m high, topped with a 30-m dome on a square base. Along the partially tiled façade, the ramps lead to a monumental entrance framed by bell towers. Under the porch, two paintings by Jean Benderly depict water. Listed as a historical monument, the building was extensively renovated from 2004 to 2006. Renamed the "Palais Lumière", it now holds a multi-media library, exhibition rooms and a convention centre. - April 19, 2025 to January 4, 2026 Exhibition of a selection of more than three hundred works drawn from a private collection of nearly five thousand paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, posters, books and illustrated magazines, by recognized artists or to be discovered. Armand Guy distillery, now known as Pierre Guy, was founded in 1890 and is classed as a Living Heritage Enterprise. Much like Maison Pernod, it is passed down through the family, with four generations having already been at the reins. (PNRHJ - Un tour en ville, “A tour of the town”)

In 1901, the Pernod factory - the largest absinthe distillery in the town - fell victim to a fire. With the alcohol reserves representing a risk of explosion, an employee decided to empty the reservoirs into the Doubs. Legend would have it that the merry inhabitants would drink the water straight from the river. However, these events led to a hydrological discovery: the first colouration in history. We discovered that the Loue was a resurgence of the Doubs, as it waters had taken on the same murky colour and aniseed smell.

These barracks, which were built with some of the money allocated by Louis XV to reconstruct Pontarlier after the fire in 1736, could house up to 200 men and just as many horses. The two L-shaped buildings were linked by a huge door, however, the municipality refused to close the square on the other side. This place was therefore split between a place of armament and a public place. In 1922, the door was removed, to allow for better circulation. (PNRHJ - Un tour en ville, “A tour of the town”)

During the early 20th century, the theatre was built as a reception hall above the Pontarlier market-hall. These market-halls are reminiscent of the large fairs that have been held in the city since the 13th century. During the 14th century, these fairs experienced a boom when the Col de Jougne (15 km south) became a commercial crossing point between the North Sea and the Mediterranean. Built in 1771 based on the design of the knight d’Arçon, to replace the entrance across the ramparts, the Saint-Pierre entrance is now one of the symbols of Pontarlier. Remodelled during the 12th century, it has kept its classical style and is listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments. Adorned with lines reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe, the entrance appears like a crown atop the rue de la République and marks a symbolic transition from the more contemporary districts and the historic centre. From 1743 to 1867, Druhen-Vandel house served as a courthouse - then referred to as an auditorium - and a prison. Here, Mirabeau was tried for “seduction, abduction and adultery” and was acquitted after pleading on his own behalf. The building itself was built based on Louis Girod’s design and is constructed around an internal courtyard adorned with a turret. This is a fine example of the architecture of its time. At the heart of the historic centre is the vast expanse offered by the Place d’Arçon where the town hall and the Pontarlier museum are both located. The first was completed in 1838 and originally housed an indoor market on the ground floor. The museum is located in one of the city’s oldest buildings, a combination of three houses, the oldest of which dates back to the 15th century. (PNRHJ - Un tour en ville, “A tour of the town”)

A former coach house, to which it owes its name, the La Poste brewery received the 20th Century Heritage label for its Art-Deco style. It is also famous for having been the place where “Septième Juré” starring Bernard Blier and “Les Granges Brûlées” starring Simone Signoret and Alain Delon were both filmed. The congregation of Les Annonciades Célestes de Pontarlier was established in 1609 by six young women from Pontarlier. The monastery’s baroque-style door, created by the sculptor Joseph Guyon, can still be admired. Its portal, which has been classed a historical monument, was completed in 1715 based on the plans set out by Nicolas Callier, an architect and entrepreneur from Besançon, and was later modified during the 19th century. Founded and funded by the nuns during the 12th century, Saint-Joseph hospital was partially destroyed during the Ten-Year War. The hospital is not only of historic interest, it also has two unique chapels - one in the baroque style, the other in Byzantine style - and a beautiful apothecary. Its setting, traditional by its colors and wooden tables, country for its view of the gardens, even has the appearance of distinguished guinguette with its large sunny terrace open in summer. The Chef’s menu is a sign of this bistro spirit. Back to basics with seasonal produce, worked with passion by local men and women such as Pierre Pecquery's fishmonger "du Léman à l'océan", Simon Michoud's charcuterie and Jean-Claude Cartailler's escargotière de Chevenoz, to name but a few.
