Exploring the charms of Chelieu, Isère, Rhône-Alpes

A beautiful walk with water as a common thread, offering a fairly gentle start before embarking on a beautiful descent through the Gabelles ravine and then a crescendo return through the Combe stream. ROUTE Follow the town hall on your left and climb towards Hauts d'Envelump and Cote 568. Take time to admire the postcard panorama ! An orientation table gives the panorama details. From left to right, you can see the Bugey peaks, the Monts du Chat, the Epine range and the Chartreuse mountains. In the background, you can see Mont Blanc on a clear day. The path on the heights is very pleasant, lined with meadows and farmland. The view remains unobstructed as far as the Ravin des Gabelles before descending into undergrowth, never very far from the stream. When you reach Lézieu, cross the level crossing and take the path immediately to the left. Watch over the children for the first 200 metres near the tracks. After La Mollat, the small road and then the track go up through the Sauvagère woods towards Tancin, where you cross a small stream that often dries up in summer. Turn left onto the woodland track as far as Les Hayes, then walk on the road for the remaining 400 metres to reach the car park. The ridges offer breathtaking views of the châteaux of Virieu and Pupetières. It is a 360° panorama over the Bugey, Chartreuse, Bauges and Vercors ranges, with a view of Mont Blanc on a clear day. ROUTE Many panoramas over the Haute Bourbre valley and the Bugey summits, from Chartreuse to Avant Pays Savoyard, await you on this path full of rich hertiage discoveries. Starting from Val de Virieu, set off on a round trip along quiet roads, in the heart of the Bourbre Valley countryside. Start / return (parking): - Station of Virieu sur Bourbre (municipality of Val de Virieu) Take the train to Val de Virieu and then continue along the Bourbre Valley. Keep your energy up with a stop to sample Bigallet products and enjoy a delicious meal at La Guinguette. Along the route, don't forget to look up and admire the neo-Byzantine church of Chassignieu, the surrounding greenery and mountains, including views of the Épine mountains.

Starting from Val de Virieu, cycle through the Bourbre valley. Climb up to discover panoramic views all the way to Mont Blanc and admire the historical heritage as you pass by the Château de Virieu. Start / return (parking): - Train station of Virieu sur Bourbre (Val de Virieu) Take the train to Val de Virieu and embark on a varied tour. The route begins along the Bourbre Valley, on a flat road with no major difficulties. 3km after your departure, turn right to admire the neo-Byzantine church of Chassignieu. A few kilometers later, you will cross the D73 to begin a 5.5km climb with 250m of elevation gain. At the start of this climb, before passing through the village of St Ondras, you can stop at the Lapérousse mill, a recently renovated 19th-century relic. The climb continues until you reach an altitude of over 600m at the Vivier pond, a popular spot for anglers. You will then remain at around 600m altitude for 7km until you arrive at the Château de Virieu. Don't hesitate to stop there, as well as at the adjacent clog museum (see their website for opening times). Finally, you'll descend back to Val de Virieu via a short but steep one-kilometer descent that requires careful handling. Once back in Val de Virieu, take the opportunity to stop for a tasting at the Bigallet distillery or enjoy a delicious meal at La Guinguette.

As far as Mollard des Mottes, the path climbs slightly and offers beautiful views of meadows where cows graze, interspersed with groves. You then reach the ridges between Montagnieu and Chélieu, with beautiful views of the mountain ranges before you. A sportive ascent to reach the medieval castle of Virieu and discover panoramas on the valley of the Haute Bourbre and the summits of the Bugey, the Chartreuse and the Avant-Pays Savoyard. ROUTE From the church, you pace up and down through the streets of Virieu, a medieval village built at the foot of its castle. The picturesque charm of the village centre can be seen in the typical Dauphiné houses, the murals frescos recounting the history of the village, the Place du Trêve painted by the impressionist Jongkind and the wooden covered market hall with its gable roof made of tortoiseshell tiles. A map of the village is available from the town hall. Once you reach Le Trêve, head up towards the Château de Virieu either by the road or along a shady path (not recommended for mountain bikes or horses). You can visit the castle and the Galoche museum, which traces the history of this shoe, a cousin of the clog (depending on opening hours). Then, as far as the Croix de l'Homnézy, there are unobstructed views over the valleys and mountain ranges. Continue upwards pass the hunters' hut to reach Les Platières. Finally, you return to Virieu, overlooking the Bourbre valley. WAYMARKING AND SIGNPOSTING From the Virieu-sur-Bourbre SNCF station, follow the yellow signs to the village of Virieu (alternative starting point - car park in front of the church). From the church in Virieu, follow the yellow markings and the following signposts: > Le Trêve (2 options to go up to the castle : by the path (pass in front of the paddle wheel) or by the road (which goes up on your right at the Trêve crossroads)) > Château de Virieu > Les Cardelles > Croix de l'Homnezy > Les Platières > Les Tournelles > Le Trêve > Return to the village center parking lot or to the train station. Please note: add 2.2km (1.1km one way) if starting from the SNCF station.

Run through Vals du Dauphiné's countryside, witnessing various panoramas, between forests and casltes views. Follow the specific signs and be prepared for two very steep sections. The route begins with a 2 kilometers climb to Château de Virieu (Virieu's caslte). A short road section will then lead you to the plateau for a breathtaking view : panoramic view on the Chartreuse, Belledonne and the Vercors. From kilometer 5, you enter in a forest on beautiful rolling tracks that will lead you to the Château de Pupetières (Pupetières's castle). It is around the 11th kilometer that the challenge comes back with a climb that will also take your breath away! The return to the starting point will be on a steep road. A variant of 8 kilometers (but with 270 meters of elevation gain) is possible by cutting through the road leading to the hunters' relay (dotted line on the map).

With a few steps under the gallery, you can access to the ancient kitchen, which now used as a dining room. You will discover the monumental fireplace with its low arch and its XIIIth century fireback, a souvenir of the ancient Chartreuse de la Sylve Bénite. You will also be able to appreciate its furniture before entering the Great Hall full of history. The King's bedroom, impressive and majestic room, called like that because the King Louis XIII slept there in 1622, has kept its original aspect and part of its furniture. You will then reach the White Room, which should have been a chapel. The visit touch to its end near the dungeon, which is now a memorial place dedicated to the Resistance during German's occupation from 1940 to 1944.

Pupetières, burned down during the Revolution and rebuilt in 1861 by Eugène Viollet le Duc. This neo gothic castle is one of the masterpieces of architecture from the nineteenth century. The polychrome glazed tiles, the interiors, are the witnesses of what was the revival of decorative art at that time. Alphonse de Lamartine, Stéphanie de Virieu, Anna de Noailles, Johan Berthold Jongking found their inspiration in this romantic place.

Welcome to MALP for a captivating time travel to the Neolithic and the year 1000. Through the exceptional remains discovered under the waters of the lake, meet the men who lived there so long ago. Thanks to its remains and many legends, Lake Paladru has always been able to feed the imagination of its visitors. It was only during the 19th century, with the discoveries of Ernest Chantre, and the 20th century, with the excavations of Hyppolite Müller, that the history of the first archaeological sites, which emerged from the waters of the lake, was revealed. Over the years, the work of archaeologists escalated and became more specific. It was in 1972 that the archaeological sites of Lake Paladru received both national and international recognition. The lake soon became a site of experimentation for innovative excavation techniques, as well as a unique site in France, for the rarity of its findings. The museum is a history of encounters, sharing, discoveries, secrets and ideas which intertwine in and around the lake. It is also a history of a village and its inhabitants, all of whom, in one way or another, have encountered the lake and its history.

In a former weaving factory are presented more than 200 years of silk weaving History. Set up in a former weaving factory, this museum presents a unique industrial heritage that bears witness to more than 200 years of textile history in the Nord-Dauphiné region. This technical museum keeps alive the memory of those who worked (and still do) this marvelous fabric that is silk. The hand looms and mechanical looms come back to work to let you discover, during your visit, the confection of prestigious fabrics such as Broché, Damas or Lampas.

Close to the Gallo-Roman Museum of Aosta, the church and the town hall, the municipality provides a lovely stone picnic table for your use.

The T-shaped building has two perpendicular wings, the most important facing east/west and the other facing north/south. The set takes place in a park with a courtyard and French gardens surrounded by an adobe and masonry enclosure of rubble to the north. The latter includes an imposing portal in wrought ironwork, located between two boss piles, next to a pavilion (brick on its east facade) topped by a slate roof at rapid slopes and sewers, topped with a zinc ridge. The castle rises to two levels, and is surmounted by a broken hipped roof, whose terrasson is pierced with curved dormers aligned in the openings of the façade, thus forming a level. The openings are arranged in regular bays on the north and west façade (symmetrical in that of a central door preceded by an opening for the north facade of the body is), while the gable is blind. Sober, the decoration is found only in a triple genoese crowning the facade, in a line of moulded splinters and in the two zinc roof ridge spikes.

The painter Jongkind produced a superb watercolour of this square in 1874, and a mediation panel on site allows you to recreate it.
