Guaranteed change of scene for lovers of untamed nature through the crossing of the woods "Bois de la Garenne" and the Negando marsh. This route is labeled and marked in blue by the Seine-et-Marne Departmental Hiking Committee. 1) Exit the train station on the right, then take Avenue de la Gare on the left. 2) Before the intersection, turn left, then straight ahead to pass behind the gymnasium and reach the D102. 3) Head right towards the town center, take Rue Geoffroy on the left, past the post office and the town hall. 4) Before the market square, take the street on the left that goes around the church and opens in front of the gîte. Further up, turn left into Cour Raphaël, then climb towards the stadium. 5) Turn left, then take the path on the right. 6) Cross the road, continue through the Grande-Laye woods and descend to the hamlet of La Chaussée. Take the D102 on the right. It crosses the Clignon valley. 7) After the bridge, turn left, then follow Rue de Moisy on the left. After the Commanderie, continue right along the Clignon Canal towpath. It crosses the Ourcq River on a canal bridge, which passes under the railway and opens onto the banks of the Ourcq Canal. 8) Follow the latter on the left until you reach the Neufchelles Bridge. 9) Turn left, cross the railway line, (CAUTION: dangerous crossing - be careful!), turn right, then use the Arcole footbridge to span the Ourcq River. Continue through the marsh. The path turns right then left before climbing into the Garenne Woods. At the edge of the woods, take the D102 on the right. At the entrance to Crouy, turn right at a sharp angle, cross the woods, pass the Notre-Dame-du-Chêne oratory, the Manoir aux Quatre-Vents, and emerge onto Avenue de la Gare. 10) Turn right to reach the parking lot.

Close to the ancient border between Champagne and Ile de France, discover the many fortresses and châteaux in the of Crouy. Departure: 1- In Crouy-sur-Ourcq, leave the railway station by bearing right, take the street going left and reach a crossroads. 2- Turn left and after the Manoir aux Quatre-temps manor house, enter the Bois de la Garenne wood. Pass the Notre-Dame-du-Chêne oratory and reach the D102 secondary road. 3- Bear right towards the town centre, turn left onto Rue Geoffroy, and pass the post office and town hall. Before the Place du Marché square, turn left onto the road rounding the church and leading to the holiday cottage (gîte). Further up, turn left onto Cour Raphaël and climb up towards the stadium. 4- Turn right, cross the D94 and continue along the path. At Château de Bellevue, bear left, cross the clearing and climb left along the path lined with locust trees. Go down the narrow road to the right, climb back up along the second left-hand path, then back down to the right. Turn left onto the D23 secondary road, right again onto the path (becomes Rue Canes), then left onto Rue du puits-d’Amour and bear right. 5- At the crossroads, continue opposite, bear right and climb Grand Rue to the left. After the church, turn right onto Rue des Ménétriers, right again onto Rue des Dames-de-Chelles and finally left onto Rue Pissotte. Continue straight on past the cemetery, then climb to Certigny and reach the old Ferme du Colombier farm. 6- Take the road to the left and at the turn take the path down towards the Bois de Raroy wood. Continue right through the undergrowth, then bear left. Cross the D102 secondary road, skirt the Parc de la Grange park by bearing right, cross the railway tracks and reach the moat of Château de Gesvres. Take the right-hand road to the D102. 7- Follow the road left, then take the path going left. Turn right onto the path crossing the Marais de la Grande-Prairie marsh. After the water station, turn left onto Rue Meuniers, then walk through the Champivert Park to reach the same crossroads as earlier. Arrival : 8- Return to the Crouy-sur-Ourcq railway station.

Continue on the path that enters the Grande-Prairie marsh on the right (follow the markings) and follow the grassy path. After the water-treatment pool, enter the village via the rue du Cheval-Blanc. At the end of the street, turn left, go around the place through the right, take rue Geoffroy on the left, and the D102 on the right. 4) In the bend, take the path straight ahead. It enters the wood, takes you to the Notre-Dame-du-Chene oratory, turns left and passes in front of the Quatre-Vents manor to end on the avenue de la Gare. Follow it on the right and reach the train station.

A discovery trail and observatories allow visitors to discover the incredible landscapes of the site and the multitude of bird species that have found refuge there. Built around 1390, this keep is a monumental reminder of Crouy-sur-Ourcq's medieval heritage. Nestling at the bottom of the valley and built at the height of the 100 Years' War, it is the finest jewel in the crown of the Ourcq Valley. To delimit their vast territory, the Counts of Valois built defensive fortresses, often ostentatiously to show off their power and wealth. On the border with the lands of the Counts of Champagne, it was strategic to build this keep on the banks of the River Ourcq from the end of the 14th century. You can discover this keep, the only one in northern Seine-et-Marne and listed as a Historic Monument in 1962, during the European Heritage Days, or take a look at it from the outside during a walk in Crouy-sur-Ourcq.

Situated in the valley of Clignon and Ourcq at the bottom of the Orxois, the town of Crouy sur Ourq offers its green and quiet surroundings. Moors and forest form the setting for the town's heritage gathered arround the church Saint-Cyr and Saint Julitte. The fortress which watched over the village since the 15th century has mostly been destroyed except the Donjon de Houssoy witness to the medieval past. It's summit offers a panoramic view over village and surroundings.

The military cemetery and war memorial were erected in memory of the French soldiers who died fighting for the capture of Etrépilly on 7 September 1914 during the Battle of the Ourcq (6-9 September 1914). The Battle of the Ourcq (or Battle of Multien) was part of the large-scale operation that was the First Battle of the Marne. This French counter-offensive halted the Germans' advance and forced them to retreat further north. In the Ourcq region, and more specifically on the Multien plateau, the communes of Etrépilly, Douy-la-Ramée, Marcilly, Puisieux, Vincy-Manoeuvre and Trocy-en-Multien were the scene of fierce fighting. A hiking trail will allow you to walk in the footsteps of the "poilus" [literally, "the hairy ones" - a term of endearment for the French infantry of World War I] and wander through the landscapes that were, almost 100 years, a huge battlefield.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste church from the XIV - XVIth century - Listed as a Historic Monument.

Built in 1920, this necropolis gathers together in one place the individual tombs dug right on the battlegrounds of the Meaux region in the aftermath of the First Battle of the Marne. Nearly 990 soldiers killed in 1914 are buried together here. 940 of them are still unknown. They have been buried together in 4 ossuaries. Half of the 341 individual graves are those of French soldiers killed between June and July 1918 during the Second Battle of the Marne in the north of the Seine-et-Marne department. Most of the men buried in the ossuaries are soldiers and officers from infantry troops, Zouaves regiments, and Moroccan and Algerian infantry regiments involved in the First Battle of the Marne. Many of the soldiers from mainland France who took part in the the Battle of the Marne, such as the men from Charles Péguy's regiment, the 276th Infantry Regiment, came from that region. Those of them who could be identified were then generally buried in a civil grave, in their village cemetery.

This historical landmark was the theater of violent battles between 6 and 9 September 1914. This important position, which had been taken by German general Von Kluck – who had installed his general staff there – had to be reconquered. After the First Battle of the Marne, Monseigneur Marbeau, bishop of Meaux, expressed his wish that the town of Meaux be spared and decided to build a commemorative monument on the very spot where the German advance was halted. This religious and patriotic monument was inaugurated in 1924 and was the site of numerous pilgrimages to celebrate the "Miracle of the Marne". The granite and cast-iron building depicts the Virgin Mary with the inscription "Thou shalt go no further".

On the road that connects the villages of Barcy and Varreddes, and in the immediate vicinity of the national necropolis in Chambry, a small cemetery houses the remains of German soldiers who fell during the 1914 Battle of the Marne. Built in 1924, this cemetery houses around 1030 bodies in a small area. This is because 998 of those soldiers (985 of whom are still unidentified) are buried in a mass grave. What's more, two to four German soldiers are buried under each of the crosses that line the cemetery. Military cemeteries are national territories. In the aftermath of the Great War, it was therefore important not to give up too much territory to the Germans.

Inaugurated in 1868, this installation designed by hydraulic engineer Louis-Dominique Girard, allows water to be pumped from the Marne and thrusts it into the Ourcq canal located 250 meters higher up. The factory was to propel the water of the Marne located below towards the canal of Ourcq with the help of a machine with wheels turbines remained in a remarkable state of conservation. Two cast iron turbines of 10 meters in diameter operate by siphon, under a waterfall of 2 meters. They drive a set of four positive displacement pumps that can pump up to 38,000m3 of water per day. The AFLO association is responsible for the development of the plant.

On the night of 5 to 6 September 1914, the Germans retreated from the positions they had occupied the previous day and entrenched themselves in Chambry, where they captured the cemetery. They cut loopholes in its thick walls to try and repel, in vain, the counter-attack of the French army. Early in the morning, the French officers sent the Moroccans to attack Chambry. At 10am, the Turcos attacked the cemetery, where the Germans were entrenched. The reports mention that the Moroccans captured the cemetery in the afternoon, but that, crushed by German cannon fire, they had to retreat almost immediately... On 7 September, it was the Zouaves who finally seized the village from the Germans at around 4pm, but they too paid a very heavy price in this attack. The Germans' loopholes, evidence of the fierce fighting in September 1914, are still clearly visible today.
