At the heart of Seloignes wood, choose a peaceful hike through the countryside along the river Oise. Seloignes wood is an immense humpback that separates the Meuse and Oise basins. The Oise extends over around 15 km in Belgium. Its source is to the north of Scourmont abbey in the municipality of Chimay, then it turns west to the French border where it gives its name to the village of Macquenoise. It then descends south to cross the departments of Aisne, Oise and Seine-et-Oise and flows into the Seine at Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, not far from Paris.

To travel through the Ardennes is to journey through a landscape that has given rise to many legends. Its secret valleys, its deep forests and its fast-flowing rivers have created legends which have been passed down verbally from generation to generation and which come to life again when you actually walk along the pathways where they were created. In the Semois valley, wisps of mist dance around you, evoking the fairies flying around the village of Les Hayons, near Bouillon. In the Lesse valley, paths lead to a natural paradise that is jealously guarded by the Nutons. In the huge Ardennes Forest, you can hear the echo of the hooves of Bayard the horse as he carries away the four sons of Aymon fleeing Charlemagne, in a timeless, endless fantasy ride. The Legends Trail follows the gentle curves of the hillsides and rivers of this enchanting landscape which comes to life and tells its tales as you move through it.

Take a forested trail from Place de Courquain – the setting of Dany Boon’s film “Nothing to Declare” – towards the Great Crossing of the Forêt du Pays de Chimay. The picturesque atmosphere of this vast forest is peppered with rural valleys, which have been shaped by the Helpe, and a series of ponds, the largest of which is the Fourchinée. The source of the Eau Blanche is found nearby. This river guides you between woods and meadows to the stately city of Chimay, via a short urban route towards the Grand Place. Three camp sites are located in this section: the Nouveau Monde, the Sentier des Pins and the Crayats camp site.

You start this stretch in the border village of Macquenoise, the most southern and westerly point of the Chevauchée trail in the Pays des Lacs region. This former Franco-Belgian Hirson-Macquenoise customs house was made famous by the popular comedy ‘Nothing to Declare’. It was renamed the Courquain Customs House for the film. This region has been a crossroad for centuries, as evidenced by the scattered Roman ruins. You leave the village through the Chimay Forest and reach Seloignes from the north. You then pass near the charming Fourchinée pond. This reservoir supplied a furnace until the 18th century. Today, it is a nature reserve home to incredible flora and fauna. Finally, you reach Forges near the Rue des Sarts.

In the municipality of Macquenoise, and specifically near to this hike, many prehistoric remains have been discovered, including a glassworks in the place named ‘Fourmatot’. Along the stream of the same name that you cross several times, glass debris from the 2nd century has been uncovered. The glass furnace was in operation from the start of the 12th century, and was closed since 1780. The hike starts and finishes a stone’s throw from the Courquains customs post, that was made famous by the film ‘Rien à déclarer’ (Nothing to declare). 

You leave the Saint-Remy forest via the Rue des Sarts and make for a much more urban atmosphere in the Principality of Chimay, with its stunning castle, which is a miniature replica of the Fontainebleau. After a brief spell on the RAVeL network, you will be amazed by the Virelles pond, a magnificent natural setting. This nature reserve boasts a wide range of habitats, rich vegetation and various birds. You may be fortunate enough to encounter one of our white storks. You then pass through Bois Robert forest in the direction of Froidchapelle. Then, make your way towards the Cerfontaine aerodrome, but not without checking out the Hamaides forest. The alternate route bypasses Chimay from the west and via the RAVeL network. Beginners are advised to avoid crossing the Rue du Lac near the Virelles pond, which is quite busy. 

Upon leaving the Crayas bivouac area, you have the option of taking the southern route, which will lead you to Notre-Dame Abbey in Scourmont. This heavily forested route is characterised by the presence of a lot of water, in particular a number of streams you need to cross, the Eau Noire valley and the passage by the Ry Rome Dam. At Bois Madame, there is a sign for a connection from the Couvin train station in both directions, allowing hikers to join the route, pass through the historic centre, and then along the Eau Noire river into the forest. You will then reach Viroinval, and more specifically the isolated hamlet of Regniessart. Two bivouac areas are located on this section of the Great Crossing: the Bivouac du Martin Pêcheur and that of the Ry de Rome.

Pleasant 6km walk, mainly in the Beauwelz wood. The name ‘Beauwelz’ comes from ‘Beau Vallon’ or ‘beau welz’ which means ‘lake’. In the 17th century, they said ‘Biauwez’. This is the name kept by our Walloon dialect. Many small streams snake through the wood. The high point of the route is: the ‘Surgineté’, where there used to be a luxury glassworks, two of whose most beautiful pieces were given to Charles Quint and the future king Philip II, when he travelled through in 1549. Once in the wood, it’s a real breath of fresh air with its pools and its magnificent alpine newts, etc. 

You join the Chevauchée route in the Pays des Lacs region starting from the French border in Brûly. After a few metres, you are immersed in the Ardennes forest, which is the true green lung of the Walloon region, and the heart of an ecosystem inhabited by various wild species and an incredible biodiversity. After this gentle forest stretch lasting around eight kilometres, you reach the refreshing village of Oignies-en-Thiérache, which is known for its slate quarries and pretty stone houses. Did you know that this town was the geographical centre of the European Union until its expansion in 2004? Once you pass through, you are immersed in the lush forest once more.

A charming little shoe-making workshop is recreated down to the most minute detail: the tools, wood shavings and lantern.

Set like a starfish at the heart of the marshes, where the enemy was sure to get bogged down, Rocroi remains a fine example of a fortified town. Owing its existence to Francis I, who wanted to build a fortification here that was even more imposing than the stronghold in Givet, the city has escaped the vicissitudes of history. And the famous French victory at the Battle of Rocroi glorified the town, impregnable forever. Guided tours of the town and its ramparts are organised by the tourist office in summer.

Memorial site, the tiny village of Brûly-de-Pesche was chosen for the location of Hitler's headquarters on 22 May 1940. During his stay from 6 to 28 June 1940, the Führer achieved his greatest military success.
