Conquering the highest peak in the Var the Lachens mountain With its ruined Castrum of Sainte-Madeleine and panoramas of endless views. From the church square, go up the lane "Chemin de l'Aire" by following the markings of the GR49 (white and red marking). To the top of the village, at the end of the paved section, at 300m. 1 - Leave the GR and follow the path going left towards the top of Mount Lachens. Walk on the shaded path (light blue marking of the local RP), along the stone walls to the clearing. Leave it on the right and continue up the main road on the left towards the Ste-Madeleine rock (steep climb!). Quickly take the well-marked trail under the pine trees and exit the woods a little before the rock. Walk again under the pine trees and at a crossroads, reach the route leading to the top of Mount Lachens. 2 - Do not take the trail leading to the ruins of the castle (300m round trip) on the left and continue on the route marked in blue on the right. The winding trail rises above the plain of the Bruyère then rapidly goes into the woods, among boxwood, brooms (plants) and scots pines, until reaching a track (some steep sections!). Continue on this track 500m after passing a collar and just before a corner, take the poorly outlined path marked in blue, going up on the right. Reach further up the path leading to the peak of Mount Lachens 3 - Follow the road (white and red markings). Pass over a picnic area in front of a tank and take the path cutting the corner. Cross the road and continue up the path. Near the forest, continue the route on the ridge of Mount Lachens amid pastures and limestone pavements. Follow the ridge to the viewpoint. 4 - The tour ends at the top located at 1 685m, just opposite the peak of Mount Lachens (1 715m). The same route is used for the return.

From the "La Rivière" inn, follow the signs for Plan de l'Arbre. Turn left on a forest track to reach a viewpoint with a 360° panorama of the surrounding peaks. An athletic descent on a monotrace will alert your senses to the valley floor and the opposite slope. A long, shady traverse along the right bank of the Jabron brings you to the 7th-century chapel of St. Pons. Take a well-earned break to contemplate this building, listed as a historic monument in 2006 and a witness to a period rich in religious events. Renovation work is underway to preserve this historic heritage. Continue on to the opposite rocky promontory of the ancient hamlet of Ville. This was once a castral village with a castle, the stones of which were reused to build the houses. Recharge your batteries with this exceptional view of the beautiful Haut-Jabron valley.

From the mountain-bike-friendly "La Rivière" inn, head up towards the reed-lined Peyroules lake. You'll then ride on trails maintained by Peyroules hunters and non-hunters for the enjoyment of all. An exceptional heritage to discover in the Verdon Regional Nature Park, at the gateway to the Préalpes d'Azur. Your hike continues with a magnificent view of the Teillon mountain. A fountain awaits your refreshment in the authentic hamlet of La Bâtie. A short and very easy circuit starting from the hamlet of "La Foux". There's an old, restored wash-house along the way where you can quench your thirst. The trail continues through fields, with a gentle gradient and a short distance for families. The mountain bike itineraries in the three hamlets of Peyroules are a must for mountain bikers in the "Des Sources aux Gorges du Verdon" destination.

Walk to the abandoned hamlet of Ville overlooking the Jabron valley and the village of Peyroules From the car park, follow the D452 towards la Foux on 300m. 1- At the village's exit (junction with D452 road of Mousteiret), go up the paved road to the left (rue du Collet). Pass a shed and take the path going left. Bypassing the valley, go up the hill passing through the pines and oaks. Further down, cross the small stream of Ste-Anne, and reach a wider path 100m further. Take this path for 500m and reach the junction with the itinerary of the Col des Portes. 2- Follow to the left the path to the Peyroules round-trip until the farmof the Pré Neuf. Follow the trail that bypasses the home. Quickly reach old cultivated areas. Follow the main road and go down towards the imposing Romanesque chapel and the abandoned hamlet of Ville. 3- After the chapel, at 200m, it's possible to follow the trail to the hilltop hamlet of Ville and to see the panorama of the valley. Otherwise, go down the path towards the southeast. Pass a small mountain pass. Go along the trail along the valley, cross the ravine of Ville and go down the hillside to the reach the road. Return to the starting point by the B-road; for about 800 m.

This walk takes you up into the hills, through former farmland, to the abandoned hamlet of Ville, overlooking the Jabron valley and the village of La Rivière.

This is a challenging hike to the summit of Teillon, which is also referred to as ‘Quatre Termes’ in reference to the four boundaries of the surrounding municipalities. From this pastoral mountain, at 1,893 metres above sea level, you can see Corsica on the horizon when the Mistral wind blows

After a long verdant valley, climb the final alpine pasture. In the spring it is an enchantment of flowers dotting the mountain. From the village, follow the GR® (white and red markings). Go in front of the hostel towards Soleilhas and the Teillon. Climb gradually the hill, then into the forest. At 1.3km, join on a berm, the intersection between Teillon and Soleihas. 1- Leave the GR®, and take the marked yellow path (PR) to the right. Climb in the woods for another 800m, then continue on the hillside above the Gravières valley. Cross the other side and cross the crossroad with the Chapelle St Martin trail. 2- Continue the climb on the Teillon trail. Arriving on the mountain pasture, cross a small stream and climb straight down the slope. Go past the photovoltaic installations and follow the cairns and the yellow markings on the ground to reach the pastoral hut. From there, another 500m to reach the top of Teillon by going straight down the slope. 3- Return by the same route, or at point 2, return by the path on the left, passing by the chapel St Martin (yellow markings).

This trail leads to the chapel of Saint Martin, erected at the foot of the imposing rock of the same name, the first parish church in the village of La Garde. From Castellane, take the Route Napoléon to the village of La Garde. Cross the village. At the first sharp bend on the left, take the Chemin des Gravières to the Chapelle Saint-Martin. From La Garde, the route climbs into the Teillon foothills. Follow the path, which bends to the right, climbs under the cliffs and then continues sideways over the Gravières ravine (steep sections). After 1,200 m, at the junction for the climb to the summit of Teillon, you'll find a waymarker. Take the left-hand path on the adret of the Gravières. Descend to the left, cross the valley and continue on the opposite slope. The path enters the forest and joins the GR®4 after 1500m, at a place called "la Bauche", to descend to the village, opposite the inn. Caution: park in the village and take the Chemin de St Martin on foot, as access is reserved for local residents.

This 17th-century chapel is located at the foot of the Robion mountain. Part of it was built under the rocky overhang.

Taking the emblematic Blanc Martel trail without taking your car couldn't be easier, thanks to the shuttle bus and the Zou 450 regional line (ex BV1 )from Riez, Roumoules, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane. Shuttle service resumes on 28/04/2023. How does it work? The Zou 450 regional line links Riez to Castellane via the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon. From La Palud-sur-Verdon, the Blanc-Martel shuttle bus takes you to the Chalet de la Maline, the trailhead. The trail ends at Point Sublime (Rougon). For your return journey, take the shuttle bus to the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon and/or the regional line 450 to Riez or Castellane. Timetables... To ensure optimum operation, the timetables of the Riez-Castellane regional line (450) and the Blanc-Martel shuttle are coordinated. Online booking is highly recommended if you want to be sure of getting a seat! Please note that the shuttle does not return to Chalet de la Maline in the afternoon.

Hanging on the western slope of Mount Lachens stands the rock of Sainte-Madeleine. This rocky peak is covered by almost inaccessible ruins which were once a castrum, built in the 11th century. This is all that remains of the original village, besieged in the 14th century by Raymond de Turenne and destroyed during the religious wars. The residents have then decided to descend into the plain to create the municipalities of La Bastide and La Roque-Esclapon.

Less than 1% of the surface of the Var exceeds 1500m. With its 1713m, Mount Lachens therefore has a dual climate originality. The first mountainous area to intercept depressions coming from the Gulf of Genoa, it is much wetter than the rest of the department, which enables, combined with low temperatures due to the altitude, the development of a remarkable mountain flora. This is how we are able to find the moonwort in the lawn which covers the top of Mount Lachens.

Sheep farming is still very present in Artuby and helps to maintain the landscape. You will definitely come across the flock while at the top of Mount Lachens.

This cow wheat is very recognizable with its beautiful purple and yellow inflorescence. It is quite rare and grows in fields and wasteland of a few very sunny areas of the department. Its fruit contains two large poisonous seeds (poisonous aucubin in large quantities).

The parish church of Sainte-Anne is a religious building built in the 19th century (1830).

This fountain is located in a station of Saint-Pierre pilgrimage and thus allowed pilgrims to drink fresh water. It was moved, hence its recent appearance, and now benefits from a new catchment basin.

How strange is the name of "Ville"! The word Town, from the Latin "villa", indicates a group of houses in the Upper Middle Ages. Today we would say a village. A fortified village was therefore already there in the Middle Ages, the ruined chapel still remaining was the former castral church.

From the ruins of the hamlet of Ville, you have magnificent views of the valley and the village, with its cultures, dense forests, and the mountains in the distance.

The town chapel is the former parish church of Saint-Pons Peyroules. Used as a chapel throughout the 19th century under the name of Saint-Anthony, the patron of the parish, it was abandoned in the mid-20th century. The attachment of the inhabitants and the determination of the town council have saved it from the ruin in the beginning of the 21st century.

At 1714 m altitude and covering 43 hectares, Mont Lachens is the roof of the Var.
