This part of the itinerary of the via Lemoviciensis (way of Vézelay) undertakes a long crossing between Sauveterre-de-Béarn and Ostabat, in Navarre. The historical discoveries are scattered all along the route (Legend bridge, Guinarthe, Pausasac milestone, Saint-Palais), even becoming very frequent at the end of the day (Gibraltar stele, Soyarza chapel, Harambeltz church). A great wealth of heritage, ideal to get to the end of a stage that is finally quite long and with a marked relief.

This is an ideal family hike to discover Savoie's heritage. From the Renaissance-style town hall to the heights of the Castera district, the walk offers walkers an enchanting architectural and landscaped setting.

An interesting stage in the province of Basse-Navarre connects Arancou and Saint-Palais, mostly along the small hill roads on either side of the Bidouze valley. The walk is lined with real architectural treasures, as soon as you leave Arancou, at Bergouey-Viellenave or Garris, whether it be churches, medieval bridges or houses with a strong Basque character.

This loop crosses the heart of the Basque country through small typical county towns! This itinerary, full of contrasts, shares valley bottoms and balcony sections as well as small communal roads and beautiful asphalt roads. A bit like the Way of Saint James.

On horseback, the GR65 will take you to the crossroads of Santiago de Compostela: Ostabat. Passing monastery and steles, meeting places for pilgrims at strategic crossroads, you will be transported to another world and other times.

It is not uncommon to meet a good number of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela on the heights of Saint-Palais. At the crossroads of the three main French routes, the ancient capital of Navarre has always seen travellers, traders, farmers and other conquerors pass through. The surrounding hilltop villages offer a beautiful array of Basque architecture as well as unmissable views of the Pyrenees. A visit to the castle of Camou is an opportunity to travel back in time before finishing a rich and varied circuit on the old railway transformed into a greenway. This hike offers walkers a remarkable diversity of landscapes. Departing from Salies-de-Béarn, it takes in farms, forests and ponds, all set against the backdrop of the Pyrenees mountain range.

At the gates of Saint-Palais, your first turns of the wheel will take you to Saint-Sauveur hill, where the stele of Gibraltar reveals the great heritage potential of this stage. Several historical routes to Santiago de Compostela converge here and, throughout the day, numerous witnesses to this timeless popular fervour for the long-distance journey will mark out the ascents and descents to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: crosses, chapels, churches, ruins of hospices, an abundance of gîtes, villages steeped in memory. Add to this the increasing density of walkers and itinerant cyclists encountered, and there is no doubt that you are riding today on a major route. At the end of the stage, entering Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port by the Porte Saint-Jacques and walking down its cobbled alleyway may even give you a few shivers.
