From Pau to Lourdes, the route continues up the Gave de Pau, from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques province to the gates of the Hautes-Pyrénées, or from Béarn to Bigorre. Leaving the Pau conurbation is very comfortable, because you will start by strolling about ten kilometers in the countryside along the river, on paths dedicated to walking and cycling.

Capital of Béarn, Pau is famous for its castle where Henri IV was born, today a national museum with richly decorated apartments and one of the most beautiful French tapestry collections. It is loved for the mildness of its climate and became in the 19th century, under the impulse of the British gentry, a site with sumptuous villas and luxury hotels with the 1st golf course of the continent. Symbol of this good life: the Boulevard des Pyrénées and its palm trees on a mountainous setting Pau turned a 1900 palace into a well-equipped congress centre, a neo-gothic convent into a national school of music and dance of the most modern kind; it has an innovative Zenith or a sports centre with contemporary architecture. Fine Arts Museum and Bernadotte Museum, funicular and white water stadium, the city holds all the attention.

In the rue Henri IV, between the tourist office and the Château de Pau, a small garden surrounds the church of Saint-Martin. To the right of the neo-gothic porch, go in search of a bitter lemon tree. In the square, a lilac from India, a tree from Constantinople, a maple from Japan... Species from far away for the pleasure of the palms of a day or forever.

Over 100 years old, the ballet of its recently restored cars allows you to reach the station and the Boulevard des Pyrenees free of charge and without effort. Its old-world charm makes it one of the emblems of the heritage of Pau, used by more than 450,000 passengers every year.

The Hédas is one of the oldest districts of the city of Pau. It takes its name from the old stream that once meandered through this place. The ravine of Hédas, located in the heart of the city, recalls its course, delimiting a mound on the western end of which was built the castle of Pau. After a year of work, Pau regains its lower town and a whole section of its history and heritage. This 1.5 km walk in the heart of the town connects the Place d'Espagne to the castle. This path allows an easy stroll for people in wheelchairs, children on their tricycle, strollers... Two lifts (one located on rue des Cordeliers and the other on Place d'Espagne) as well as numerous stairs facilitate easy connection between the upper and lower town.

A promenade with a panoramic view of the Pyrenees for nearly 2 kilometres, linking the gates of the castle to Parc Beaumont and its conference centre. From the 1820s, the mild winter climate of the city of Pau began to attract a rich clientele of foreign tourists. The arrival of the train in 1863 made it a preferred resort for the upper classes from all over Europe. In 1872, the construction of the Boulevard du Midi was completed, linking the castle to the royal place. In 1891, the engineer Jean Charles Alphand created a long promenade. Its main characteristic is that half of the platform of the boulevard lies on the edge of the cliff plateau that dominates the Gave, and the other half on a viaduct supported by 49 pillars. The promenade was completed in 1900 with the junction of the two sections to the south of Place Royale.

The Joantho Gardens palm grove is opposite the train station. Its name comes from the Municipal Councillor who proposed the plan to Henri Faisans, the mayor of Pau from 1888 to 1908. Look upwards to see the magnificent view of the arches of the Boulevard des Pyrénées. The palm trees of the garden stand out against the background of the palm trees of the Boulevard, and magnolias and banana trees line the Sentiers du Roy. A promenade that winds its way up to the Boulevard des Pyrénées, with a unique panorama on the mountain range, with benches and terraces. It is also possible to go there with our emblematic cable car that was inaugurated in 1908.

When you enter the birthplace of Bernadotte, a superb 18th century residence, you find yourself in an intimate setting where the objects (documents, original engravings, paintings, etc.) retrace the life of this famous son of Pau, both marshal of the Empire and the founder of the dynasty of Sweden.

Bordering the Boulevard des Pyrénées, Square Georges V and Boulevard d'Aragon are a major creation of the 1920s-1930s, linking the emblematic promenade to the new heart of the city, Place Clemenceau. On the right, the Palais d'Aragon. On the left, the liner-style Ossau Palace gives Square George V a unique ambience. A little further on, the building at no. 14 enjoys a prominent position on the boulevard. Called the "Maison blanche" or "Immeuble aux colonnes" by the people of Pau, it was designed by Henry Challe in the 1930s, and boasts the classicism of Pau's Art Deco style, as well as a pediment sculpted by Vérez depicting a couple framing a fountain of youth.

At the foot of the Château de Pau, the Parliament of Navarre and the Gave de Pau lie the contemporary gardens of the Conseil Général des Pyrénées Atlantiques. A first garden of stones and water, punctuated by palm trees where paths and rectilinear basins follow one another. The water built, parallel to the Heïd canal which crosses it from east to west. Completed in 2000, this carpet garden is to be admired overhanging from the Boulevard des Pyrénées from where its full splendour can be seen. It is connected to the walks called "Les sentiers du Roy" (The King's Paths) linking the castle to the lower town. Come and admire in spring the shrubs of heather earth: rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and hydrangeas. Have fun tracking down the phlox, the alchell or the primrose. Also take the time to take a look at the modern and daring architecture of the Hôtel du Département.

Formerly known as "Bois Louis", this park planted with beautiful trees formed the southern part of the estate that the Jesuits had bought from Henri de Tisnès in 1662, to establish the kitchen gardens of the Collège Royal (now Lycée Louis-Barthou). In 1808, Napoleon donated the property to the city. After 1950, the municipality transformed the former velodrome into a municipal stadium, named the Tissié Stadium in homage to Dr. Philippe Tissié (1853-1935), founder of the Lendits scolaires and initiator of calisthenics in France. The stadium is used for school sports and becomes the heart of the Pau Grand Prix automobile circuit every year. Outside these festive periods, the stadium remains a quiet space, offering walkers a gentle green link between the center and the lower town.
