Explore the charms of Senez, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

A visit to the picturesque village of Le Poil, clinging to the slopes of the rocky outcrop from which it derives its name "lou péu", "stake" in Provencal. From the Les Blaches parking lot, turn left onto a steep slope that cuts through the yaw and walk about 700m to reach a well-maintained track on the left (parking for two cars possible). Sign "Saule Mort, Majastres le Poil". Follow the good track steeply upwards and, after a few hairpin bends, past the Gîte de Saule Mort, which can be seen on the right on a promontory, stay on the main track and continue to a junction and a bridge over the gorge. Leave the track on the right that leads to Majastres and take the left-hand track that follows the Ravin du Village to the abandoned village known as "le Poil". To return, climb up to the ruined church currently being "renovated", then take the mule track in fairly good condition down behind the village to rejoin the track. Take the track downhill and stay on it, leaving all the paths and drailles to your left and right. After a long descent and several hairpin bends, leave a beautiful inhabited building on the right. Continuing downhill, the track again runs alongside the Clovion, but this time on its right bank. Cross the river on a cement embankment and continue to follow the track, which climbs steeply, leaving all tracks to the right, until it crosses the D17 road. Opposite, take a track which first descends and then climbs steeply, in very poor condition, with deep ruts and gullies. Return to the Les Blâches parking lot.

A beautiful walk overlooking the Riou d'Ourgeas ravine, which narrows into deep, narrow gorges shortly before reaching the chapelle de la Melle and the Bergerie de Haute Melle, a major Resistance site in the Alpes de Haute-Provence.

Family walk to the promontory of Chapelle Saint Jean, marking the first site of Barrême.

Starting out in the same way as circuit no. 15, this loop leaves it shortly before the hamlet of Riou d'Ourgeas for a long climb on forest tracks towards Haut Ourgeas and Montagne de la Barre. This is followed by a descent along a beautiful path under the pines to Barrême. The most athletic will do this route in 2 hours.

From the church in Barrême, this tour combines plant and mineral elements on Saint-Jean hill. This viewpoint overlooking the Asse and its tributaries bears witness to the collapse of a limestone cliff during the Tertiary era.

Through the hills, this hike links the villages of Senez and Blieux (fine views over the Asse de Blieux valley) and follows in the footsteps of the historic route taken by Napoleon in 1815 between Castellane and Digne les Bains.

This ancient path linking Blieux to Chasteuil leads to Colle Basse, overlooking the Verdon valley at 1446 m.

A bucolic walk to the hamlet of Thon. Superb Romanesque stone bridge over the Asse de Blieux and its waterfalls.

The summit of Chiran, its astronomical observatory and its panoramic views of the Alpine peaks. From the parking lot, head down to the village of Blieux for 200m until you reach a wooden sign saying "Portail de Blieux et Sommet du Chiran". 1 - Take the path on the right by a small concrete bridge. Five metres after the bridge, leave the main path leading to the house and take a small trail around it to the right. The climb begins quickly. In a short series of hairpin bends,you will discover the rare lavender fields of the pre-Alpine area. Continue climbing the path which can sometimes be steep, with multiple bends but occasionally flat, then around a corner, we can glimpsethe waterfalls of "la Clue". Pass along the right side of the canyon, after crossing several rocks. After this rocky landscape, pass, at the crest, the Robine canal before regaining further up some grazing areas. Follow the path, on a traverse, towards Portail de Blieux. 2 - At the mountain pass (Portail de Blieux, 1 620m),reach the track at the top and through it, reach the top of the Chiran (300m of elevation over 2.9km). 3 - At the top, a reading table will allow you to enjoy the panoramic views of the Alpine peaks. The same route is used for the return.

A sustained hike through the imposing Chiran massif, culminating in a 360° view and an astronomical observatory. From the Bas Chaudoul parking lot, descend 200 m to the small concrete bridge, cross it and take the path on the right which skirts the house. After a short succession of hairpins, continue on a fairly steep, winding path. You can see the "La Clue" waterfalls, which you will skirt to the right. After this rocky landscape, crest the marl to reach a pasture area. Follow the path across to the pass (Portail de Blieux 1620 m), then climb to the summit of Le Chiran (300 m ascent over 2.9 km). 360° panorama: Mont Pelat and l'Estrop to the north, Mourre de Chanier and Grand Mourre to the south, Lac de Sainte-Croix to the south-west. If you've got a pair of binoculars in your bag, you'll be able to see Mont Ventoux and the Lubéron plateau. Return by the same route.

Taking the emblematic Blanc Martel trail without taking your car couldn't be easier, thanks to the shuttle bus and the Zou 450 regional line (ex BV1 )from Riez, Roumoules, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane. Shuttle service resumes on 28/04/2023. How does it work? The Zou 450 regional line links Riez to Castellane via the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon. From La Palud-sur-Verdon, the Blanc-Martel shuttle bus takes you to the Chalet de la Maline, the trailhead. The trail ends at Point Sublime (Rougon). For your return journey, take the shuttle bus to the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon and/or the regional line 450 to Riez or Castellane. Timetables... To ensure optimum operation, the timetables of the Riez-Castellane regional line (450) and the Blanc-Martel shuttle are coordinated. Online booking is highly recommended if you want to be sure of getting a seat! Please note that the shuttle does not return to Chalet de la Maline in the afternoon.

Since 1922, our mill extracts extra virgin olive oil, a genuine fruit juice, only with mechanical means to olive oil amateurs’ great joy. For more than 40 years we have been making cosmetics and soap made in a cauldron just like Marseille soap. The harvest of olives is done manually with hand and automatic combs to preserve olives quality. Then, we proceed to the grinding of the fruit with a simple mechanical method, without the addition of chemicals or change in temperature. At the end of the grinding, we get an extra virgin olive oil with a free acidity lower than 0.8%. Our mill produces a local extra virgin olive oil. Our olive oil is peppery and refreshing which is specific to the aglandau olives (90%). Nearly 400 olive growers bring their olives to supply you with: - Green fruity olive oil - Local olive oil All our products are available at our shop and online shop: olive oil, homemade products, Marseille soaps… We also make basil, mint and lemon oils. Olive oil sold at the Serres, Orpierre, Sisteron and Laragne tourist offices. We offer visits of our soap factory from April to September by prior arrangement.

If you're passing through Barrême, have you ever noticed the large brick chimney soaring into the sky? It's a perfume plant distillery. The distillery was built in 1905 by an internationally-established German company. Set in the heart of the machinery, the museum is dedicated to the surprising history of this factory and the distillation of lavender in the Grasse hinterland. Aromatic plants, essential oils and games will awaken all your senses. Also worth a visit is the museum store dedicated to lavender and perfume plants. Events are held regularly in July and August.

If sirenians the ravine of Tabori, who lived in the sea, are now at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, it is not because of a sudden drop in the water level. The sediment accumulated at the bottom of the sea for millions of years are found upright and altitude when the Alps were raised.

Water sometimes flows into the ravine. In its work of erosion, it gradually reveals the relief shaped for the first time more than forty million years ago. On the right bank, you can see a gray limestone massif dated back to 140 million years (Jurassic). On the left bank of the marls and yellowish sandstone limestone, dating back to 40 million years.

Fossils relate us about the history of life. They have allowed the birth of the theory of evolution by showing us the existence of now extinct animals. In our region, ammonites are a good example. They disappeared 65 million years ago after having populated all the seas of the globe during the Mesozoic era.

Fossils less than 1% of living things are found fossilized, which goes to show that fossilization is somewhat “miraculous”. It is the transformation of the remains of an organism and its conservation in rocks. Obviously, the mineralized portions (skeletons, shells, etc.) are best preserved. But wood and fingerprints, traces of activities, could also be preserved, thus providing valuable information.

Overlooking the town from its 184m straight and steep cliffs, the top of the Roc is decorated with a chapel topped by a statue of the Virgin and Child. Majestic, strong and anchored since the dawn of time, it looks like the relic of a surrealist dungeon, left there by improbable and fantastic creatures.

The "neighborhood" called Lèques situated to the north of pass of Lèques evokes the name of these thrush traps, consisting of two flat stones, that allowed to trap the birds at that time (a completely prohibited practice today). A few juniper berries, thrushes’ favorite candy in winter, were placed between the sticks. The bird had to move the sticks to peck at grains, and the vertical stone fell and knocked it.

Zygaenas are Lepidoptera insects of the Zygaenidae family. They are divided into several genus. There are nearly 800 species of zygaenas worldwide, including 60 in Europe and 35 in France.

On the pastures you will often encounter flocks of sheep especially in summer on the pasture lands but you can also meet some of the cattle, the pastures of the Alps of High Provence are suitable to marvel.

For the men who lived here for three or four months a year, as for the people who lived there year-round, water was the first need. The development of a fountain on these heights required many efforts. Water from a spring was collected several hundred meters from here and carried by a canal, or aqueduct, made of dry stone. Around this water point, other developments have gradually gathered: the wash house, the watering trough and the bread oven.
