This route starts at the top of a hill. You are in Monchy-le-Preux, a quintessential Artois village that boasts some particularly fine architecture. Just after leaving the village, head through the “Bois du Château” woods, where you will discover a beautiful neo-Gothic chapel. This beautiful route will take you through wooded areas, open countryside and hedge-lined pastures. On the way back you will pass several reminders of the terrible battles that took place here in April 1917. Near the beautiful neo-Romanesque pilgrimage church you can find the Caribou, a memorial dedicated to the brave Newfoundlanders who repelled the enemy’s huge counter-attacks during the Battle of Arras, while further down the street, three soldiers of the 37th Division keep eternal watch.

A magnificent 2.7-hectare park surrounds the Saint Jean farm. This tour offers panoramic views of the various main sites commemorating the Battles of Artois which took place during the First World War, including the impressive German cemetery at La Maison Blanche, which you can visit. The trail is certified by the French Federation of Hiking (FFRP).

Just a few kilometers from Arras lies the Bois de Maroeuil. A number of trails are available, including the Sittelle loop. Approximately 1.2 km in length, it is ideal for people with reduced mobility and the visually impaired.Along the way, you'll come across some remarkable trees, see the historic remains of the site, notably the sandstone extraction pits, and perhaps catch a glimpse of a deer or squirrel, both of which are very present on the site.In spring, daffodils and hyacinths brighten up the walk. The compacted limestone surface is passable all year round, and the breadcrumb trail guides you along the path.

This trail, which passes through varied surroundings, will take you to the sites of three nearby abbeys: Mont-Saint-Eloi, Etrun and Maroeuil. There you will discover some ruins that managed to survive the destruction of the revolution. The trail is certified by the French Federation of Hiking (FFRP).

This trail takes you to the theatre of the famous Battles of Bullecourt, which took place in April and May 1917. The village changed hands some twenty times over the course of that year. These battles took a terrible toll, with British and Australian casualties numbering 8,893 and 10,771 respectively. More than 10,000 Germans also lost their lives. The 2,249 Australians and 1,875 Brits who were killed at Bullecourt have no known grave. Their names are inscribed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and on the British Memorial at Arras. Many still lie buried in the earth of the Artois region. The memory of this battle has been kept alive by the “Digger” statue (the term used by Australians and New Zealanders to refer to a veteran), which was erected in 1992. It was created by Australian sculptor Peter Corlett, the son of a Great War veteran. The Digger’s uniform and insignia symbolise the four Australian infantry divisions who fought here. Since 2010, a French remembrance stele has also commemorated the sacrifice made by the soldiers at Bullecourt. A museum has even been opened at Bullecourt to pay tribute to those lost during these battles.

The Puppet Centre will take you on a voyage of discovery, during which the Centre's hidden treasures will be revealed to you – treasures from the four corners of the earth. This trip around the world will thus take you in the footsteps of the most popular figures in European puppet theatre, known by the young and the not-so-young alike, but also in the footsteps of the typical characters and techniques found in the puppetry traditions of various African and Asian countries. Apart from the heritage items stored in the museum, the Puppet Centre offering for visitors also consists not only of various temporary exhibitions, educational events (upon request), creative workshops, but also many shows, training sessions and courses for children and adults. NEW! An unaccompanied tour for families entitled "Jack s'est fait la malle" – the puppet called Jack has disappeared! The only evidence of where he has been are the selfies that he has hidden, here and there, in the museum's rooms. We need you to help him to get back to his designated place amongst the other puppets! It is the oldest public garden in Arras, It has a play area, a boules court, a basketball pitch and a baseball ground.

20 metres below the pavements of Arras, discover the Wellington Quarry, a site immersed in memory and emotion. In November 1916, the British started preparing for the 1917 spring offensive. Their stroke of genius: to have the New Zealand tunnellers connect up the town’s chalk extraction tunnels to create a real network of underground barracks large enough to accommodate up to 24,000 soldiers. After a 20-metre descent in a glass-fronted lift, the audio guided and escorted visit plunges the visitor into the site’s atmosphere. A strategic location as well as a living space, the Quarry, named Wellington by the New Zealand sappers, preserves the memory of those thousands of soldiers quartered underground just a few metres from the front, before launching themselves onto the fi eld of battle on 9th April 1917 at 5.30 in the morning, in a surprise attack on the German positions. Through the projection of a fi lm, coming to the surface in the soldiers’ footsteps bring the shock of battle to life.

The Saint-Vaast Abbey and the Cathedral together form the largest eighteenth-century religious architectural grouping in France. Founded in the seventh century, the construction of the Abbey marked the birth of the Medieval town. The huge scale of the construction we see today is an accurate reflection of the economic and spiritual role it has played in the town’s artistic and cultural development down the ages. The Cathedral, in Neoclassical style, contains some marvels (sculptures of saints from the Pantheon, Aubusson tapestry among other things) and a few Art Deco surprises. Today, the Abbey is home to the Museum of Fine Arts and an ultra-modern mediatheque (successor to the great library of Saint-Vaast). At the entrance to the Cathedral, a QR-code will give access to information on the Diocese of Arras.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 15th July 2005, the Belfry offers an imposing view over Arras and its surrounding countryside. Access to the fi rst level of the Belfry, from the Tourist Offi ce basement, by lift (+ 40 steps) to a height of 55m for a panoramic view over the town. Push open the doors of the Hôtel de Guînes and step back into the eighteenth century. Built in 1738 as the town residence of the De Guînes family, this grand townhouse was constructed between a courtyard and garden, along the lines of Paris townhouses of the period. Cross the paved courtyard to admire the mischievous faces on the façade and enter the listed reception rooms. The Hôtel de Guînes hosts a number of events throughout the year: festivals, concerts, exhibitions etc.

Adjacent to the Saint-Vaast Abbey, covering an area of 1.2 hectares, the garden boasts some remarkable flower displays and majestic trees, making it a special place in the heart of the town.

Built in 1730, this house was occupied by Maximilien Robespierre from 1787 to 1789. Today, it is home to an exhibition retracing the history of the Compagnonnage (guild of journeymen companions). Who are they? What are their ideals and symbols? What have they contributed to society? What action do they undertake today? So many questions about this age-old yet still active movement. An enriching walk in the world of the Journeymen Companions as they toured France.

The Arras Museum of Fine Arts, which occupies a large section of the Saint-Vaast Abbey, possesses some of the most remarkable collections held in provincial museums: rooms displaying seventeenth century paintings by the French School and old Low Countries masters (among them Champaigne, Vignon, Lebrun, Largillière and Rubens) and a set of large-scale French religious seventeenth paintings, unique in France, including seven “Mays” from NotreDame Cathedral in Paris. The museum also holds the finest testimonies of Arras’s history: Medieval sculptures, eighteenth-century Arras porcelains, landscape paintings by the Arras School (among them Corot, Dutilleux and Desavary) and a unique example of the high-warp tapestries (Arrazi) that made the town’s reputation in the fifteenth century.

Installed in a former miners’ lamp factory and refurbished by the famous architect Jean Nouvel, Cité Nature is a cultural and scientific centre dedicated to the questions we ask about food and agriculture, nature and health. 2,500m2 of permanent exhibitions on the environment, foodstuffs, the history of agriculture and food; 1,500m2 of temporary exhibitions; a “discovery” space for children; rooms for organised activities, 15,000m2 of gardens “of all descriptions” with its kitchen garden, vines and rose garden. Cité Nature has been designed specifically for the pleasure of learning, for all ages, whilst allowing time for relaxation and enjoyment. Cité Nature offers «Holiday Workshops for all the Family» during the school holidays, organised activities on the first Sunday of the month and a concert on every third Friday of the month.
