This 21 km loop is an invitation to discover the surroundings of Cognac-la-Forêt. The beginning of the route is quite surprising with a sportive climb through the woods. Then, the circuit allows you to contemplate the various bodies of water, before finishing by crossing the charming village of Cognac-la-Forêt.

The former gatekeeper's house, 50 m from the river and a majestic old elm standing guard over the old Boussignac mill, turns its back on the small railroad line linking Limoges to Saint Junien. A dozen TER shuttles run here, and only during the day. The small road leading down to the gîte doesn't go any further, but is extended by a hiking trail that allows you to discover the calm and verdant nature of the Vienne riverbanks. The gîte opens onto a terrace covered by a pergola, from which you can observe a small fish pond. The grounds are enclosed, and a shed is available for fishermen to store their gear, or for storing bicycles. The small town of Saint-Victurnien owes its existence to a Scottish hermit who settled in this valley around the 6th century. A church was built around his tomb. This 12th-century Romanesque church boasts a particularly rich collection of furnishings: the building contains a dozen paintings, two of which, dating from the 17th century, depict moments in the life of Saint Victurnien. The church?s treasure trove is equally remarkable: on display are the 19th-century reliquary bust of the saint, in silver-plated bronze, and the reliquary of Victurnien?s skull, made in 1920 and shaped like a ciborium, in enamelled bronze and copper, with painted enamel decoration. The capitals of the north and south portals feature a frieze of plant motifs.

The lantern of the dead is a hollow granite pillar, with a niche at the top in which a flame was hoisted to light eternity, helping the souls of the departed to find their way. Most date from the 12th century and are located in cemeteries. There are 7 in Haute-Vienne.

Situated 20km from Limoges, the commune owes its name to a hermit who, according to legend, lived in the forest on the banks of the Vienne in the so-called tenebrous valley in the 5th century. Dating back to the 13th and 15th centuries, the church of Sainte-Marie-de-Vaux boasts listed furnishings: a polychrome wooden statue of Sainte-Catherine, a wooden cupboard set into the masonry and a 19th-century monstrance. A huge 15th-century fresco covers the vault. This mural painting forms a complete and homogeneous whole that bears witness to our local religious heritage. In front of the church stands a Gallo-Roman stele, a monolithic plinth with a molded base on three sides. Was it intended as a stone for the dead, an altar, or could it contain the ashes of a deceased person, as the base appears to be upside down? It also seems to have been moved. So what's its secret?

Just 25km from Limoges and 4km from Saint-Junien, the pretty village of Saint-Brice-sur-Vienne is split in two: the northern part is part of the village of La Fabrique, with its famous Porcelain factory and craftsmen; and the other part stretches south along the Vienne valley. Three short hiking trails offer pleasant views over the Vienne valley. Fishing enthusiasts, whether leisure or sport, will also find something to their liking on the banks of the Vienne or Glane rivers (night fishing for carp). To make the most of these activities, the Chambéry site has four self-catering cottages, each with a sports field, tennis court and children's play area, on the edge of a pond.

Discover the aquatic botanical garden, where over a hundred varieties await you. From the sacred lotus to the 3-metre-high Egyptian papyrus, you'll discover a wide variety of water lilies, elephant ears and gunera, a prehistoric plant with leaves over a metre in diameter, from water mints to the vanilla flowers of the cape hawthorn. You can stroll through our forest of giant bamboos, over 16 metres high, and from May onwards appreciate how quickly they grow, reaching full size in just three months. What's more, the park features games for all ages. Visit the theme park "Féeriland ou Le Merveilleux Monde Miniature" for the pleasure of young and old alike.

The church, which became a parish church in 1265, was originally the castle chapel. It was built in three phases: in the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries. It is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles. On either side of the central nave are two chapels. Each has a keystone on a ribbed cross, bearing the coat of arms of the de Cognac and de Lur families. The church also boasts a polychrome high relief of Saint-Roch and a bas-relief, both listed as Monuments Historiques. The bas-relief is similar in style to the one in the church at Angoisse in the Dordogne. The de Cognac family, lord of the place, and the de Pompadour family, lord of Angoisse, were linked through the marriage of Annet de Cognac and Hélaine de Pompadour. In 1628, they were living in the Château de Cognac. The bas-relief therefore dates from the 17th century.

Between heritage and modernity, the Musée du Chanvre et de la Ganterie (Hemp and Glovemaking Museum) is a thematic space presenting two permanent exhibitions, with guided tours, demonstrations and audiovisuals: "Hemp yesterday and today", to discover the history of hemp, a plant of the future, through old tools used in the 19th century in Limousin, as well as its many current applications (food, cosmetics, eco-construction, etc.). & "History of a pair of gloves": from 1924 to 1994, Cognac le Froid, then la Forêt, was an active center for glove-making, and this exhibition presents tools, machines and accessories to help visitors understand how a pair of skin gloves is made. Temporary exhibitions are also held throughout the year. On-site: a store selling organic hemp products.
