Balade de Victurnien

La petite ville de Saint-Victurnien doit son existence à un ermite écossais qui s'installa dans cette vallée aux alentours du VIe siècle. Une église se bâtit autour de son tombeau. Cette église romane du XIIe siècle possède un mobilier particulièrement riche : une douzaine de tableaux sont présents dans l'édifice ; deux d'entre eux, datés du XVIIe siècle, représentent des moments de la vie de Saint Victurnien. Le trésor de cette église est tout aussi remarquable : sont exposés le buste reliquaire du saint, daté du XIXe siècle en bronze argenté et le reliquaire du crâne de Victurnien, réalisé en 1920 et en forme de ciboire, en bronze émaillé et en cuivre, comportant un décor émaillé peint. Les chapiteaux des portails nord et sud sont ornés d'une frise aux motifs végétaux.

Lieu de dévotion, les fidèles accrochaient sur la croix les vêtements ayant été en contact avec les parties du corps atteintes de maladie, afin d'obtenir la guérison.

The small town of Saint-Victurnien owes its existence to a Scottish hermit who settled in this valley around the 6th century. A church was built around his tomb. This 12th-century Romanesque church boasts a particularly rich collection of furnishings: the building contains a dozen paintings, two of which, dating from the 17th century, depict moments in the life of Saint Victurnien. The church?s treasure trove is equally remarkable: on display are the 19th-century reliquary bust of the saint, in silver-plated bronze, and the reliquary of Victurnien?s skull, made in 1920 and shaped like a ciborium, in enamelled bronze and copper, with painted enamel decoration. The capitals of the north and south portals feature a frieze of plant motifs.
