Discover Coarraze: Charm and Nature in Pyrénées Atlantiques

First mentioned in the 12th century, Coarraze is one of the twelve baronies of Béarn: its territory originally encompassed Labatmale and Saint-Vincent. Around its castle grew a large village, both farming and working-class. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became one of the main industrial centres of the Pays de Nay, based around the textile and timber industries. Punctuated by the prestigious heritage of the church and the château, this trail traces the history of these different activities, from home-based work to large-scale factories. Meet at the starting point, in the town hall car park.

A sporting circuit that rolls along nicely, with a continuous combination of climbs on tracks or small roads and slightly more technical descents on paths. It also offers lovely views of the hills and the countryside beyond Coarraze, on the outskirts of Bigorre.

The lake of Sargaillouse is a small artificial lake of half a hectare, at the heart of Coarraze Wood. Fed by the Sargaille stream it discharges its overflow into the Lagoin. Nestled in a luxuriant, verdant setting, it represents a complex ecosystem where forest and wetlands cohabit. Here you can find a great number of bird species, such as heron, egret and kingfisher; and a great number of amphibians, including salamanders, newts, frogs and toads. The local fish are rainbow trout, bream, carp and roach. This small lake, stocked with young fish every year, is the perfect place to go fishing with your family and for picnics.

A more difficult ride than VTT1, this circuit is well suited for beginners who want to test their endurance and their potential on steep climbs. The downhill ride through the wood of Carrasquet is great fun.

Wood pigeons are the most common of European pigeons. Settled in France, they enjoy the mild and temperate climate of the south-west. They live at medium altitude, in forests surrounded by croplands but also in town, mixed in with pigeons and magpies in green spaces. Well-known for their massive migration in autumn, they are the birds from the north of Europe, which fleeing the harsh winter, go on to Spain. For a few years now, the migration corridor has shrunk and moved towards the Bay of Biscay. This change in behavior raises questions among hunters who for all time have extensively hunted this bird throughout the Pyrenean mountains.

Located in the town of Nay between Béarn and Bigorre, this tour will lead you to discover the urban development of the bastide outside the walls, linked to the Industrial Revolution. As you walk along the Gave de Pau, which flows through the town, you will understand better where our ancestors got the energy for this industrialization.

The Pyrenees so close by, the presence of water and the richness of our heritage all add to the charm of this very easy ride on a cycle route; accessible to all, it can be extended as far as the Baburet footbridge. BR® 43 and BR® 44 can be combined for a beautiful route alternating between the right and left banks of the Gave de Pau.

Nestled in the heart of the village of Coarraze in Béarn, this castle is listed as a Private Historic Monument. Château of the barons of Coarraze and the Albret Miossens family, it is here that Henry IV, King of the Béarn, spent his childhood. The current building dates back from 1755 and was built in an Italian style after the original castle was ravaged by two fires in 1508 and 1684. Built in 1930 to relaunch the mining of iron in Baburet, the footbridge was a key component of the railroad that linked the mine with the train station of Coarraze-Nay. From the 16th to the 19th century, the Baburet iron deposits supplied many forges in the Pays de Nay and the valley of Ossau. The closure of the forges in 1866 led to the shutting down of the mine. In 1930, to meet the needs of new factories all over France, the mine reopened and the railroad was built. After the final closure of the mine in 1962, the railtrack was dismantled. The renovated footbridge now plays a part in the new era of low environmental impact travel.

La Minoterie was an industrial wasteland. This former flour mill, which had fallen into oblivion for 15 years, has been rehabilitated into a place of modern art where artworks are exposed all year in temporary exhibitions.

Remains of an industrious community, this old mill had been abandoned for 15 years. Completely left to ruins, a lot of will and energy were necessary for its rebirth in July 2001. This space of 1500m² ( 16145.87ft²) is divided into 4 levels: 370m² ( 3982.65ft²) for the exhibiting modern art, 50m² (538.196ft²) for the art lending library, 2 artists’ studios, 1 engraving workshop and an archives centre.

In the heart of the Ouzoum Valley, the hill of Ermitage d'Asson was once called "oppidum". This term means a highly fortified site that probably dates from the Iron Age and was transformed in the Middle Ages. At this time, this castle had moats, defence embankments and a central street that we can still make out today. One of the marked hiking trails in the Nay Region, called "a millenium pastoral community ", passes exactly through there; it is the culmination of this marked trail.
