Tour quiet easy around Najac to discover very old fountains in wooded and quiet surroundings. Start possible from the holiday village VAL-VVF at the locality Puech Moutonniers. Essential to the village life the fountains were supplied by drainage water from the Terre-Rouge/La Planquette plateau. They are called “griffouls”. The first fountain was built in 1344 in the Bourguet area into a granite block. Some ancient consuls and bishops faces are sculpted on it. The fountain was used until the beginning of the 20th century.

Nice footpath with varied landscapes. First part on the hills and trip back along the river Aveyron with shade, ideal place when the weather is warm. Several places of interest all along the tour. Start possible from the Holiday Village VAL-VVF. The Chestnut tree was (with the rye) the basic foods for a long time. It saved a lot of inhabitants from the famine in times of scarcity.

Tour approachable for everybody around the hamlet of Mergieux. However some parts have a difference in height quite important. This tour do not start from Najac, it is accessible by car or from the tours n°6 and n°8. The main part of this tour is in the forest. Some conifers were planted for the forestry development but the broad-leaved trees constituted the forest cover until the early 20th century. The forests around Mergieux holiday village are use by the ONF (Forestry Commission).

Départ : Rue du Majou à la « Porte du Majou » : La rue s’ouvre sous la porte « porta Major » de l’enceinte médiévale bâtie au XIIIe. Le blason au-dessus de la porte représente le rempart et le Château de Gourdon. C’est une des 4 portes de Gourdon qui s’ouvrait sur une barbacane. La « Grande rue » du Gourdon médiéval commence ici ; elle est bordée de façades des XIII, XIV, XV, XVIe et XVIIe siècles, anciennes échoppes et hôtels particuliers des grandes familles de marchands gourdonnais. « Chapelle du Majou » : Chapelle de style ogival dédiée à la Vierge. Bâtie contre le mur de la cité au XVIe. elle fut saccagée pendant les guerres de Religion et restaurée au XIXe. Comme le mentionne la plaque c’est un « Autel privilégié ». Des indulgences étaient accordées par le Pape aux fidèles qui y « prient pour la conversion des pêcheurs et le triomphe de la Sainte Église ». De belles boiseries du XVIIIe se trouvent à l’intérieur. Plus haut dans la Rue du Majou, une maison à colombages et à encorbellement, ainsi que l’Office de Tourisme. Après l’Office de Tourisme, sur la droite la Maison du Sénéchal : Anciennes échoppes gothiques au rez-de-chaussée. Au 1er étage : fenêtres à meneaux de la Renaissance. Un escalier à colimaçon à l’arrière permet l’accès aux étages supérieurs Dès le XVIe siècle c’était la Maison du représentant de la justice royale : le Sénéchal. À l’extérieur, les latrines sont visibles dans l’impasse. À l’intérieur des fresques du XVe et les plafonds à la française du XVIIe montrent la richesse passée de ses résidents. (ne se visite pas) En haut de la rue du Majou, la Place de l’Hôtel de Ville : L’Hôtel de ville : du XIIIe, il fut reconstruit au XVIIe, ancien siège du « consulat » mis en place dès 1244. Les barreaux d’une ancienne cellule témoignent que la justice locale y était dispensée. À l’intérieur : Escaliers à paliers de style classique. La porte est décorée du blason consulaire : ce sont les armes de la ville « d’azur à la croix d’argent cantonné de 4 fleurs de Lys d’or reversées ». Les couverts de la place, au cœur de la cité, étaient un lieu de marché. L’Église Saint Pierre (M.H.) : Sa construction a débuté il y a 700 ans et s’est achevée au XVIe siècle. Les tours du clocher se dressent à près de 35 m de hauteur. Cette église fortifiée (mâchicoulis sur la façade) d’aspect austère à l’extérieur est un édifice de style gothique languedocien très ouvragé à l’intérieur. L’abside du chœur est décorée d’un retable en bois doré en trompe l’œil, oeuvre des sculpteurs Gourdonnais les frères Tournier. Ces tableaux en relief représentent des scènes de la vie de Marie et de Jésus (bel exemple de la sculpture baroque du XVIIe). En longeant l’église par la droite, La Maison Cavaignac : Porte classée Monument Historique du XVIIe (la femme à la balance symbolise la justice). Comme le signale la plaque, c’est la maison natale du député Conventionnel Jean Baptiste Cavaignac qui siégea à la « Montagne ». Son père fut maire de Gourdon. La descendance n’est pas moins célèbre : le Général de Cavaignac s’illustra notamment dans l’Histoire Nationale au XIXe s. Possibilité d’accéder à la table d’orientation (Ancien Château) par les escaliers au fond du parking. Le château : Aujourd’hui un belvédère à 284 m d’altitude doté d’une table d’orientation. Rien ne reste du Donjon médiéval construit par les seigneurs locaux. Il fut démantelé par ordre du Roi Louis XIII pour punir Pons de Lauzieres deThemines tombé alors en disgrâce. Descendre la Rue Sourde pour voir les Ogives et les fenêtres à Meneaux. Passage par la rue Frézat, la rue la plus étroite de la ville. Arrivée dans la Rue du Cardinal Farinié, face au Presbytère, remonter et prendre à gauche la rue de la Mairie ou « Rue des Consuls » : pigeonnier et maison à bolet. Rue des consuls : Au XIIIe, la vie municipale s’organise grâce à la charte de Coutumes octroyée par les seigneurs de Gourdon et régit les droits : privé, pénal et public. Les consuls administrent la cité, assistés des représentants des seigneurs locaux. Ainsi s’amorce un processus d’émancipation qui favorise l’essor économique de la cité. Arrivée dans la cour du Sénéchal, traverser les Jardins du Sénéchal pour arriver Rue Zig-Zag : la rue des Taverniers. Belle Porte du XIIIe s. Retour Rue du Majou.

Species diversity : This part of the Bonnan valley is made up of a succession of meadows, formerly used by sheep, now mown. This practice is conducive to the development of a wide variety of flowers, particularly orchids, which are much appreciated by pollinators. The contact between the dry hillsides and the wetlands that accompany the Bonnan contributes further to making this valley one of the richest in the Tarn in terms of species diversity. A particular wetland formation with tall herbs develops on a plot of land at the edge of the path: the hemp-leaf orchid can be seen here, as well as the tall orchid, an orchid of wetlands. From the different colours of the flowers and butterflies, the smell of the cut grass to the sound of the deer bellowing in the valley, the senses are always awake here.

The small valley of Bonnan is towered over by the sheer faces of limestone cliffs. Over this 11km route, you will discover a landscape which alternates between green meadows, arid, barren hillsides and the grassy expanses and twisted oaks of the Caussenard plateau. A tuff waterfall: In karstic regions, infiltration water causes the formation of dolines (closed depressions in the relief) and other avens by dissolving the limestone. Most of the time, they reappear in the form of Vaucluse springs. A similar phenomenon exists in the Bonnan valley in the form of a petrified waterfall. The event occurs during periods of high water. The water pours down in a tuff cascade (non-homogeneous porous rock, often powdery, in this case of sedimentary origin) over a height of about forty metres to cover the sandstone (stable mixture of rock and clay). A natural well collects them. Once underground, they resurface as a Vaucluse fountain at Gourp de Fénérols.

On the borders of the Lot, an old bastide stands: Puylaroque. The parish of Sainte Marie Madeleine d'Aussac is known since the beginning of the 11th century. The presence of a site from the early Middle Ages, nearby, suggests an even older existence. The church was rebuilt in the 15th century, after the long Franco-English conflict, as shown by the angel bearing the coat of arms of the kings of France. The plan adopted is very characteristic of the reconstructions of this period: single naves, side chapels... Some remains of wall paintings from the late Middle Ages have been uncovered.

The Green Lake, park and garden in Montpezat-de-Quercy At the green lake, you will find a very pleasant setting, in the middle of nature and removed from any visual pollution. An atypical church in Tarn et Garonne, the Saint Ferréol Church (12th-19th century) in Lavaurette with its round tower and its square tower. 13th century portal and bedside tower 1837 Original church from the 12th century, destroyed and rebuilt in the 16th century, it was further destroyed under the reform, which only spared the bell tower. Another 17th century church was replaced in the 19th century by the current one, in neo-Gothic style, with a seven-sided choir and a seven-branched rose window on the west facade. The church suffered and then it was rebuilt and renovated. The construction site is permanent. A turret already exists with its staircase on the Presbytery side but it was decided to install a clock in a bell tower worthy of the name. This is how the wall bell tower becomes a square tower as opposed to the round tower! From one municipal debate to another, time passes and the clock is not installed until 1850.
