Maison des Chevaliers - Musée d'Art Sacré du Gard

The Musée Laïque d'Art Sacré du Gard offers a bold and original cultural approach to sacred art. The collections are housed in the Maison des Chevaliers, a listed historic monument adorned with painted decorations and ceilings from the 14th and 15th centuries. A truly secular museum! What do a Romanesque Virgin, a soldier statuette from a Chinese tomb, an African mask and a Cretan icon have in common? Unlike traditional fine art museums, the Musée d'Art Sacré du Gard brings together objects that are not usually seen side by side. The significance of these works is obscure to most of us today... The Musée laïque d'art sacré du Gard offers a bold and original cultural approach to sacred art, and sheds light on the meaning of the works in its collection. A medieval residence Serving as a showcase for the collections, the Maison des Chevaliers, a listed building, is one of the jewels in the crown of Gard's heritage. Behind this enigmatic name lies the perfectly preserved home of a wealthy dynasty of Rhône valley merchants. Built from the 12th century onwards, the house has undergone numerous transformations. Discover the impressively proportioned 14th-century Royal Court of Justice, as well as two 15th-century ceremonial halls with sumptuous, strikingly modern decor. On the magnificent painted ceilings, alternating with a program of coats of arms, exotic animals, fantastical beings and scenes of daily life depict the imaginations of medieval man.

Vallée de l'Ibie

Vallée de l'Ibie

Remarkable natural site. The Ibie Valley is a sensitive and remarkable natural space. Its turquoise waters on its limestone bed offer a striking landscape. The Ibie has its source at the foot of Coiron, in Villeneuve de Berg on the edge of St Jean le Centenier, then crosses St Maurice d'Ibie to flow into the Ardèche near Vallon Pont d'Arc. Along the Béalières, old mills, waterfalls and white pebble beaches, discover this superb but fragile valley. It is not uncommon to see it dry in summer, but infiltrated in its limestone bed, it continues to flow underground, only to resurface a few hundred meters further, to hide again a little lower. To discover this superb valley, it is recommended to visit it in autumn or spring, when the greenery of the vegetation competes in beauty with the turquoise waters. Picnic areas are easily accessible for families in the village of St Maurice d'Ibie and in the hamlet of Sallèles. If you discover fossils in the riverbed, take a photo of a souvenir and put it back down: subsequent visitors will thank you and the relief will be preserved. To educate your children about the importance of water, a “Water is Life” game trail is available. For smartphone enthusiasts, the fun and connected route of Les Sallèles is what you need. Randoland trails will help you discover Villeneuve de Berg and St Maurice d'Ibie in a fun way with children aged 4 to 12. Many hikes cross this magnificent river, as well as mountain bike trails and horse riding trails. A leaflet “Welcome to the Ibie Valley” by the “Syndicat de Gestion des Gorges de l’Ardèche” is available in your Tourist Office: I live in a living and sensitive environment, I preserve it: I stay on the marked paths I don't light a fire I keep my dog on a leash I don't do wild bivouac I bring back my trash I am as discreet as possible
